Last Thursday they scored three runs in the top of the ninth to beat Richmond 8 to 6, for Ronnie Maver's third straight win. Sunday they bombarded Dundee wit!) sixteen hits to win 12 to 2. Russ Cox, a College teammate of Dave Klapj>erich, went all the way for the win. At Richmond, things looked good as the Shim rocks scored five runs in the third inning, but Richmond stayed in the game and finally pulled ahead with three runs in the last of thev eighth. With one out in the ninth, Denny Swedo was safe on an error and Gene Freund singled. Vern Peterson pinch-hit for Bill Woodrow and lined a single to center to tie the game. Tom McAvliffe then played the hero's role as he doubled to right field scoring the winning runs. Ron Maver pitched a good game again liesides driving in two runs in the third inning. Bombard Dundee At Dundee Russ Cox, a fast balling right hander kept the evergreens in check, as he allowed seven hits and didn't walk anyone. It was a close game most of the way. The score was tied 1 to 1 going into the seventh inning, but then the Shamrocks power cut loose as they scored 3 in the SQyenth, 6 in the eighth and 2 in the ninth. ~*Phis is the best looking team the 'Shamrocks have had in quite a few years. They can prove it next week when they take on the Johnsburg Tigers on the McHenry diamond. First place in the County League is at Stake and we're sure these men would love to be up in that spot. Don't miss the big game. On Sunday the Tigers went to Richmond where many a close battle has taken place between the two rivals. This time it was a runaway as Johnsburg won 13 to 1. Eddie Mack allowed only 5 hits while striking out 18 batsmen. The Tigers had 11 hits, but were given 7 bases on balls to aid their cause. Errors also played a big part. Dick Hiller had a two-bagger and triple to drive in 4 runs. At Dundee on Memorial Day, the Tigers breezedKto a 14-4 victory with DeCicco on the mound. Hiller added a riome \n u 2-base hit and triplem tftife game to send 5 runners acrolj, the plate. ^ Three runs in the first inning and 6 in the second just about told the story of this game, although Dundee kept swinging away in an effort to get back in the game. V. Hopp was the big gun with a home run and three bagger. The Tigers drew 9 walks and 10 of their batters struck out. DeCicco struck out 11 and walked 4. Next Sunday Johnsburg travels to McHenry where a battle for first place will be in the making. JOHNSBURG ah r h J. Schaefer ss 4 3 2 T. Huemann c 5 3 1 T. Oeffling If 6 2 1 D. Hiller cf 5 2 2 B. McHenry Legion Nine Opens Season With 2-1 Win Over Harvard McHenry's Legion team began its season Wednesday night by beating Harvard 2-1. Phil Schmidt went the distance, giving up five hits while striking out seven. McHenry scored in the first inning when Clarence Adams reached base on an error, stole second, took third on an infield out, and came home when Harvard's pitcher committed a balk. This run held up until the fifth when Harvard picked up a run on two hits and a walk. Phil Schmidt walked to start our half of the seventh. Jim Meyer singled him to second and both runners advanced when John Hiller sacrificed. Tim Farr then singled to send Phil home with the winning run. Side notes: The legion team has two North Suburban League All-Stars in John Hiller and Lloyd Smith. John Corso was voted most valuable player by his team-mates at Marian as was Lloyd Smith at McHenry. Phil Schmidt and Jack Adams are the team's two top pitchers. McHENRY COUNTRY CLUB The Aggregate Tournamept finals were played Thursday, and the two-some able to withstand five rounds of golfers taking pot shots at them were G. Schaeffer and H. Along with this record Milton captured the Gateway Conference Championship with a four man total of 299 for the eighteen hole tournament. Gary was named Milton's golfer of the year after the season concluded May 25. The McHenry Collegian shot a three under par 69 against M.I.T. in Milton's last match of the year. Gary had a consistent 75 average for the seventeen matches he participated in. Along with having the lowest average on the team he also had the distinction of being the only unbeaten golfer on the six man squad. From Sheboygan to Chicago Gary was unbeatable. Another Milton golfer from McHenry is Gene Stilling. Gene had a consistent 82 average and helped to pUll many matches out of the fire with his never say die determination to win. No games have been rained out sind in the majors it looks like a nip and tuck battle all the way. Every team has tasted defeat at least once and only the Orioles have failed to crash the win column. But don't sell this determined group of Orioles short. They have some good ball players and their day is coming soon. Little League organizations from other towns often ask how McHenry is able to have such a nice Little League Field. There are many reasons of course, such as the fine volunteer help of managers and coaches and ladies who run the refreshment stand. But, I think the greatest bouquets must go to three groups. They are, the V.F.W. who owns the grounds and have done much for its improvement. Just this year they put up fine new wash rooms for the use of Little Leaguers and Pony Leaguers. Then there are the sponsors of each team, who bought the uniforms and original equipment, and last, but not least are the many business men who have purchased advertising space on the home run fence.
