Since the acquisition of the 358 acres which comprised the Girl Scouts in Sybaquay council have been selling millions of cookies to their faithful families and friends in anticipation of their very own camp. The day has finally arrived and the actual construction will begin this month to provide the girls with a year-around camping facility. The first phase of the Chapman Hills Troop camp will be completed this fall, with additional plan for building to cover a ten-year peridil. Although this entire project will not be completed until fall, tent platforms will be ready for use in July. The immediate facilities will consist of four units in all. The first will include a winterized troop house and tent platforms to accommodate thirty-two girls and their lenders The second and third units will have tent platforms, also latrines and wash facilities. The fourth will be u primitive unit with latrines and water. The girls who have had experience camping wjill. be assigned to this area. Tents to be used at Chapman Hills will be walled tents to accommodate two girls. Up to this time Chapman has been used as a primitive camping area for older troops. In the future it will be a Council operated troop camp during the summer season with four staff members to help coordinate program for leaders and girls. What practical, economical steps can states take right now to reduce auto' accidents and deaths? The Insurance Institute of Indiana conducted a study to find what safety devices have been most effective and which ones could lie used to curb specific accidents. As a result, the Institute supported three serrate bills before the Indiana legislature that would require use of seat belts and reflective plates and would require vehicle inspections by the state. The seat belt and license plate bills have passed, but the inspection bill is still in committee. Edward P. Gallagher, insurance executive and head of the public educational office of the Institute, rej>orts that mdny devices and programs were studied. "We sincerely feel that these three programs can work wonders on the highway..." The need for seat belts is shown by many studies, Gallagher pointed out, including * study of 10,000 accidents by Cornell university. In discussing the need for inspections, he said that surveys by states point out that, more than 50 per cent of cars have defects that need immediate attention, and that common defects include the lack of rear lights or defective rear lights. Gallagher noted a relation between the need for inspections and reflective plates. Pointing out that painted license plates are visible at about 300 feet and that it takes 320 feet to stop when a car is going at 65 m.p.h., Gallagher reported that the use of reflective plates increases visibility at night by 1,000 to 1,500 feet, according to studies by 10 states where reflective plates are in use. He estimated that more than 100 lives could be saved in Indiana each year with reflective plates. Gallagher also said that the death rate is lower than the national average in the eighteen states with inspection programs, while the death rate is up to 13 per cent higher in the 32 states without an inspection program. VERY YOUNG MOTHER: Medical records show that a healthy child was born to Linda Medina, age 5, in Lima, Peru, several years ago. There are many records of births to 9- year old girls. ROTARY NEWS Our Rotarians enjoyed a most pleasant day at the Sox park recently as guests of Oscar iber. The occasion was especially noteworthy since part of the proceeds from the sale of tickets benefitted crippled children. Oscar is a long time member of the Chicago Rotary, which sponsored the sale of tickets in order to raise money to build a therapy center in the city. Among the many committees of our club is one called "international contacts." The Instructions to the chairman of this committee is that he is to stimulate club members to take part in the great exchange of information and ideas between Rotarians around the world, to encourage development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service which is an unique that the world fellowship of Rotarians offers. This yeai Jack Kelsey heads the committee and has a most interesting, as well as educational program set up to start with our new year, which is July 1 in Rotary, when all new officers are installed. Mr. Kelsey has arranged an exchange program with the Bega, New South Wales, Australia Rotary club. This club compares in size very favorably with our McHenry club as both have an average of about thirty-eight members. The town of Bega is situated 270 miles south of Sydney, Australia, on the Prince's highway, and is in the center of the agricultural section of that country. Besides its important dairy industry and shopping center, it is well equipped for relaxation with facilities for bowling, golf, tennis and swimming. Their charter night was Aug. 21, 1954, orrs was May 12, 1955. Some of the things planned are an exchange of tapes recorded by both clubs, including a lot of questions a great many answers and no doubt plenty of laughs for both clubs. Jack has received the first tape just this week which will be presented to our club meeting within the next week or two. Color slides will also be exchanged.
