High scoers were Maxine Bixby and Ruth Woodward Thursday, June 27, 1963 Wonder Lake ELECT OFFICERS FOR AUXILIARY AT UNIT MEETING Mary Lov Hartog - Officers for the 1963-64 year were elected at the June 20 meeting of Unit No. 1169. Officers elect are as follows: Lois Haak, president; Dorothy Michels, first vice-president; Ann Eberle, second vice-president; Donna Carr, treasurer; Marie Bendl, historian; Helen Caley, chaplain and Rose Strojny sargeant-at-arms. The new officers will assume their duties following the department convention in Chicago Aug. 1, 2, and 3. Rose Strojny and Lois Haak will attend the convention as delegates from the W.L. Unit. Mrs. Marion Tobin will represent the unit at a luncheon honoring the Gold Star members on Friday Aug. 2. The membership voted to purchase a unit flag to be displayed at all meetings and parades. Looking back over the past few weeks, it was noted with pride, the many activities that have taken place. At the May meeting 11th District Director Lucille Sandberg and her secretary Beth Stevenson of Joliet were entertained. Poppy Chairman Lois Haak reported 800 poppies were sold on poppy day in Wonder Lake. Participation in the Memorial Day parade, a 3-day bake and resale which was highly successful, the guys and gals card party, all helped to boost the girls morale. Wonder Lake was one of the four units in the county honored at the June 7 county meeting for having obtained 100 per cent plus quota in membership, having forty-seven senior members and thirteen junior members for 1963. At this meeting it was announced by County President Hazel Purvey that Jerre Elberson, County Pan-American Chairman and a member of the W.L. Unit, had been awarded a citation and cash award for the best report submitted on the county level. At the same time, our Unit P a n - A m e r i c a n C h a i r m a n Amanda Donash also received a citation and cash award for her report on the unit level. Dorothy Michels received an award from the county coupon chairman for being one of the top "coupon getters" in the county. Garden Club News Dorothy McEachren, president of the Garden Club, ably assisted by Mrs. Genevieve Wielock, entered an arrangement in the Grayslake Garden Club Show on June 21 and received an honorable mention ribbon. The arrangement was of auratum lilies with variegated hosta leaves arranged in a madonna of Leerdam crystal. Two members of the club have been on the sick list recently. Elsie Hoppe has been in Sherman hospital in Elgin having eye surgery and Mrs. Marian Carder has been ill at home with a slight heart attack. We hope this finds both of them well on the road to recovery. The ladies are making plans to have a new civic project to replace the triangle project which has been discontinued. Profiles Our profile this week is about a young lady who I think is spending a real vacation - the kind most of us only dream about but never have. Peggy Wrede, daughter of the Gail Wredes of Wooded Shores, is spending the summer in Hawaii. We wrote earlier in the year about how the Wredes' older daughter, Jan, was spending the past year attending the University of Hawaii and of Juvenna Chang whose home is in Hawaii and who spent all her vacation time from Ripon College at the Wredes. On June 9 the Wredes drove Peggy, their youngest daughter who is a student at Woodstock High School, to Ripon, Wis., where she joined Juvenna and another classmate and the three of them drove to Cascade, Montana - the home of the third classmate. From Cascade Juvenna and Peggy took a bus to Seattle, Wash., arriving there June 14 in the morning and in the evening of the same day they boarded a plane for Hawaii. This was all a very well kept secret from Jan who had no idea her sister was coming. At the airport Jan and Juvenna's parents and family were all watching for Juvenna and who should Jan run into but her sister. Juvenna's parents said it had been so hard to keep the secret but it was certainly well worth it to- see the expression on Jan's face and to hear her exclamations. The girls will all spend the summer in Hawaii and return the end of August in time foi school. Jan and Juvenna are both attending summer school at the University and Jan is also taking up scuba diving. Both will return to Ripon college in September for their senior year. Martin, a former resident of Wonder Lake, and to Dick Lees on the death of his mother who died this past week in Maywood. Transferred to California Mr. and Mrs. Pat Whalen left last weekend for California. Mrs. Whalen is the former Jodi Kolar. They were recently married at Christ the King church. Pat, who just graduated from Corpsman School at Great Lakes, has been transferred to the hospital at Camp Pendleton in California where he will be stationed for the next 20 months. They have been living in Waukegan and will take a belated honeymoon on their trip West. Auxiliary Booth At Carnival It's getting close to that time again and the ladies of the Firemen's auxiliary are getting things set up for their booth at the annual Fireman's carnival which will be held July 26, 27 and 28. This year, in addition to a doll booth and various other interesting things, the ladies will also sell home baked cakes, pies, rolls, etc. So, you can enjoy the carnival and also take home some rolls for breakfast or a cake for that midnight snack. Rummage-Bake Sale The Wonder View Women's auxiliary will hold a rummagebake sale, Friday, June 28, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.ni. to 6 p.m., at Dean's Store, Wonder Center 4106 E. Nativity Luthera Church News On Sunday June 30 at 6 p.m. the Luther Leaguers will leave from the church by car to attend the Choral Vespers service in Chicago. The Choral Vespers will be at 7:45 p.m. in celebration of the 433 anniversary of the Presentation of the Augsberg Confession, at Luther Memorial Church, Wilson and Campbell Avenues in Chicago, sponsored by the Evangelical Fellowship of Saint Michael, a Lutheran Society for Renewal in the Church.
