Yet during a Florida Gold Coast Marathon race a competing boat well in the lead bounced off a &ave, vaulted through the air and the driver watched his competitors pass by from a roost in the crotch of a tree. A young couple bought a new station wagon, a thing of beauty with twotone paint to match their outboard sports runabout. The odor of fresh upholstery still clung to its interior when the husband returned from work to find the new car with hood dented and one side bashed in. He was hard put to believe his wife's explanation that the car had been kicked by a policeman's horse. Then one afternoon the husband came back from a fishing junket in a taxi. He never teased his wife again about her altercation with a mounted minion of the law. He and a pair of cronies had launched his boat, then parkecj the freshly repaired station wagon with trailer in tow alongside a bulkhead. Several hours later the fishing trio had returned to find car and trailer flat as a flounder underneath the bow'of a submarine! Weird boating accidents don't occur every day, but they do happen. " A Philadelphia doctor owned a twin-engine 28' cabin cruiser of unique design. She was exceptionally fast and could beat anything her size until she hit an airplane! A Pippr Cub had made a crash landing on the river. The pilot escaped uninjured and the plane sank. No one was able to locate the plane until two weeks later when she suddenly bobbed to the surface in midchannel directly in the path of the doctor's cruiser. An aluminum utility soared through a drug store window and slid to a stop at the feet of startled Coke drinkers at the soda fountain. Another cartopper nearly missed the cab of a truck and turned loose hundreds of chickens on a highway south of Norfolk, Va. An unlimited class speedboat plummeted into the midst of a formal garden party at Seattle .some years ago. Most boating accidents, however, aren't such flukes. A surprising number occur to boats in transit over the hi;*h ways. The bulk of these are caused by lack of normal precautions. Trailer hitches should be carefully secured before getting underway. Never tow without a safety chain. Trailer hitches can rattle free ot the hitch or trailer tongue tip can break. Safety chains should be secured well back from the hitch and fastened directly to a car's frame member Or to a securing location and separate from the hitch itself. Keep trailer wheel lugs tightened and occasionally inspect springs. A loose spring shackle- can allow spring leaves to shift. If car-top racks are of the suction-cup typ6 be sure the auxiliary straps are hooked securely to car top gutters. Lash the boat to both the carrier and with safety lines to securing locations on the car. Remember that Af an accident occurs to your boat you may not merely lose your boat, you may he responsible for damages. You'll feel . more secure if you carr# adequate liability insurance.
