The fish was 11% inches long and weighed 2 pounds, 10 ounces -- two ounces heavier than the previous record bluegill for Illinois. A 4-% pound bluegill caught in Ketona Lake, Ala., in 1950 holds the world's record for this species. Since Illinois has a much shorter growing season than Alabama, it is doubtful that a native bluegill of this size will ever be caught here. Sullivan caught his fish on a spinning rod and was using a live worm for bait. It was taken from a small strip mine northwest of Marion. Quotas for shotgun deer hunting permits have been filled in the following counties: McHenry, Gallatin, Stephenson, DeKalb, North and South Pope County, Hardin, Clinton, Carroll, Ogle, and Jo Davies Counties. Applications for permits in these counties are being returned to hunters, who are asked to re-apply for a second choice immediately. The McHenry Sportsmen's Club will hold their monthly prize trapshoot Sunday, July 28, commencing at 10 a.m. A jackpot shoot with a $40 purse will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Sunday, July 28 is also the date for the annual water trial held by the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of Illinois, at the Chain-O-Lakes State Park The stakes, starting at 9 a.m. will include: Derby and All-Age open to all German Pointing Breeds. Puppy and Open-All-Age will be open to all breeds. Ducks will be used in all stakes. The Puppy Stake, for dogs 6 to 15 months will consist of a single retrieve. Two single retrieves among decoys will constitute the Derby Stake for dogs 6 mos. to 2 years. The All-Age Stake will include a single and double retrieve among desoys for dogs from 6 mos. Single, double, and blind retrieves from among decoys will make up the Open All-Age Stake for dogs from 6 m&s. Results of water trials throughout the country have proven that the German Pointing Breeds can be as efficient in water as they are on land. A good way to be convinced of this and also to have an ^enjoyable day, is to attend the trial this Sunday. AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL WAIT! Our team scored all of its runs in the second inning when ten men batted and six of them reached bas£s via walks. Wayne Hiller got the only hit of the inning which saw the first four batters walk and eventually come around to score. Our inability to hit-'with men on base sums up the defeat as thirteen runners were stranded in seven innings. Phil Schmidt gave a great all around performance as he hfcld Union's hard hitting team to five singles in the five and one-third innings he pitched and got three hits off Gary Rudinski who pitched a fine game. Jack Himpelman singled in the fourth for the only othe;r McHenry hit. We moved in the first when Jim Meyer walked and came home on a two base error by the Union right fielder. Wonder Lake Game Wayne Hiller went 5 for 5 as the Legion team defeated Wonder Lake last Sunday. Jim Meyer and Joe Fino also had good days as they each bad three hits. Jack Adams went the distance striking out 16 batters, which is certainly a tremendous feat. Sirhon and Eberly collected hits for Wonder Lake. This was the 8th win for the team against three defeats. Side Notes: Wayne Hiller leads the team with a *550 bdtin major, minor, and miniature -- well done. The All Star game at Crystal Lake did not come out as planned although our boys played the game to perfection. Losing one to nothing in the last inning is heartbreaking, here again, they were real sportsmen. Crystal Lake is to be congratulated, having gone on to win the area tournament. Our considerably smaller boat was lifted on the mountainous wake and slammed against the canal side. No real damage was done, but the comments I made about the offending boat's rude skipper weren't the sort of thing one enters in a log. When I arrived at the lock the large cruiser was laying to about 200 feet from the lock entrance. Her skipper was angrily shouting at the lockmaster. The lockmaster signaled us ahead and we proceeded on into the lock. I was surprised when the lock gates closed after we had rigged lines around mooring posts and killed our engine. In the few minutes it had taken to put out fenders and secure our boat, my two sons had ferreted out an explanation of what had occurred. I had seen them looking into a box-like arrangement that looked somewhat like a letter drop. Actually this is a periscope through which the lockmaster can see boats approaching up to four miles away! When last we could see the lock, the down stream gate was still open. The irate skipper apparently was given plenty of time to learn that the Army gives lockmasters absolute authority and this includes precedence at locks and the authority to depart from standard operatine Dractices as, in their judgment, the circumstances warrant. , When you approach a lock, stay clear of the end of the guide walls and wait for the lockmaster to signal you to enter. Various methods are employed to gain the lockmaster's attention. At some locks a signaling device such as a bell may be provided. If so, it will be marked. At others, vessels desiring lockage are expected tb give notice to the lockmaster by a blast of their boat's horn at whistle. Such signals are not consistent. Some locks limit lockage hours for pleasure boats and some even limit lockage each way through the same lock to .once in 24 hours. Write to Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army, Wash., D. C. for data on lock regulations in the cruise area of your choice. Carry aboard at least 50 feet of mooring line.
