Ed had a comfortable ^ shot lead goinf! into tlie final rriund, and although he was chased by Art Jackson, he finished the round and the tournament 6 strokes in front. Congratulations to you, Ed In the Handicap Championship Tournament the results were a little different. When the dust finally settled on that tournament, Doc Sayler was leading the pack for three rounds but faltered in the final round and lon^-stridin^ George Yorgan walked over everybody and took the title, shooting a nice game in doing so. Our congratulations to you, George, and condolences to Doc Sayler, who had the boys going for awhile. Here are the totals for the first 6 men in each tournament: Club Championship: E. Buss, 291; A. Then to continue for more fine golf comes Paul Overton who last week went around the course in a sizzling 08. T^is was Paul's finest game on this course and no doubt was a real thriller for him. Outdoors By Jack Walsh •PRMWMIGttUfiiliUltltllililitililililMMMMi MINNEAPOLIS -Duck hunters in the Mississippi Flyway will have bigger bag limits and a longer season to look forward to this fall. Some restrictions remain on species of ducks still in short supply but the dta\\y limit of four ducks and-'fhe possission limit: of eight is double that of 1962, the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife, Department of the Interior, said today. States in the Mississippi Flyway will have the option of choosing a duck season of 35 consecutive days or split seasons totaling 32 days. The states will select their seasons within the extended period starting Oct. 5 and ending Jan. 5. The daily bag limit on mallards and black ducks will be mallards or two blacks or of each, with the possession limit set at four. Hunters in this flyway are also allowed a bag and possession limit ot two wood ducks, the same as in 1962. Last year's bonus season on scaup (bluebill) ducks throughout the flyway was restricted this year, with only that portion of Louisiana below Highway 190 being open to extra scaup in the bag. The restriction was made- to protect diving ducks., primarily the canvasback, redhead and ringneck, now at. low population levels. Despite an increase in canvasback and redhead populations this summer, these species are still 10 to 15 per cent below average in numbers and a closed season on them was ordered. The daily bag and possession limit on coot was increased to eight and 16 this year as a result of relatively high coot production on the major breeding grounds. Restrictions were continued on mallard and black duck, the Bureau said, because these species have not fully recovered from all-time lows in 1962. The Bureau hopes to increase the breading populations of these ducks by at least 10 per cent in 1964 to take advantage of the improved water conditions in Canada. Average mallard production --about 1.3 young per adult -- is anticipated this year. Th£" abnormally low 1963 breeding population, coupled with delayed improvements in much of the Canadian breeding grounds this summer forecast only a moderate increase in the mallard flight this fall. The stage is set for the comeback of the mallard and othaf scarce ducks in 1964, the Bureau added, but 1963 is not the year to kill off all the actors. Mississippi Flyway states may also select a 70-day goose season, con>>ecutive or split, within the period Oct. 1 to Jan. 15. The daily bag and possession limit on geese will be five. The Canada goose season will remain closed this year in Louisiana and Arkansas, where attempts to re-establish wintering grounds for Canadas are being continued. Goose kill quotas established by the Bureau in conjunction with the state conservation department include a quota of 12,000 for the so-called Horicon area in Wisconsin, 20,000 for the Horseshoe Lake area in Illinois and 25,000 for the Swan Lake area in Missouri. Wisconsin has been allowed to set two separate goose seasons, one for the Horicon area and another for the remainder of the state. The Bureau also approved a request by Wisconsin to open the goose season in the Horicon area as early as Sept. 20. Missouri will be able to set separate goose seasons for the Swan Lake area and for the remainder of the state. Sunrise to sunset shooting is legal for ducks and geese in year except on opening day of the duck season, when shooting begins at noon. In the event goose seasons open concurrently with duck seasons, a noon owning will prevail. Champion And Runner-Up< 1 SOFTBALL NOTES The Drivers Seat 1. If you don't have an outside mirror, get one before all else. They are essential to safedriving. 2. Get a flashlight and mount it with magnetic clamps or, better, bolt-on clamps beneath or alongside the steering column, so it is always available immediately in case of an emergency. 3. If you frequently trailer a boat, arrange to have heavy duty brakes and shock absorbers. Normal brakes, particularly on smaller cars, will not long take the tough wear of a car and a trailer. 4. Use seat belts and seat harnesses. There is no question that they save lives, even of people who normally drive at moderate speeds in urban areas. 5. If you live in a state that does not issue "safety" license plates -- fifteen states will be in 1964 -- put a wide strip of reflective tape on your bumper, in case of mechanical failure on a heavily traveled road at night. i 6. If your car isn't equipped with a spray unit to clean your windshield, buy one. They can be the difference between seeing the road ahead and crashing into somethihg in front of you.
