Marshall of McHenry who once received one of the highest honors the Bell System can bestow on an employee, retired recently from Illinois Bell Telephone as a group chief operator in Elgin. She spent thirty-five of her thirty-nine years working in the McHenry exchange, where she was chief operator for nearly 30 years. Miss Marshall was one of a group honored in 1926 with a bronze medal Vail Award, which had been established only six years before to recognize acts of outstanding public service by telephone employees. A fire had broken out in a bakery two doors from the telephone office, and burning embers were igniting small fires as they descended on the telephone building. Firemen warned Miss Marshall and six co-workers to vacate the building but they chose to remain at the switchboard to complete calls despite grave personal danger. Smoke hung in the room, and the board was lighted only by candles held by telephone men who also worked in the building, Miss Marshall recalls. She was not even scheduled for duty that day, but rushed- to the office before the first wail of the town fire siren died down, knowing her help would be needed to handle the flood of calls. Emergency Call "I'm especially glad I wont," said Miss Marshall, "because I received an emergency call from a woman about to have a baby. Feeling for the jack that would connect the doctor with the woman, rather than seeing it, I plugged the call through and we got the baby born O.K." A full life awaits Miss Marshall in retirement, as she plans to assist her sister who ert Kulissk, Conrad Rupp, Mae Draznik and Joseph Stefenhagon, Wonder Lake; and Paul Colomer, Paul Hays and Lloyd Wagner, McHenry. Harvard Hospital Mrs. Robert Freund, Lawrence Cook, Helena Stoffel and Jane MacDonald of McHenry were patients during the past week at the Harvard hospital. Miss Marshall is a charter member of the McHenry lodge, Women of the Moose, and the Altar and Rosary society of . Patrick's church in Mc- >nry. Honored At Gathering!* Many gatherings honored ss Marshall previous to her drement. On one occasion, telephone mpany officials were hosts i a dinner, the program feating an interview by Ron Mil- • • of Station WRMN, Elgin. The luncheon was attended employees, company execuiives and by Miss Marshall's sister, Mrs. Ralph Bennett, and son, Christopher. Another time, co-workers, relatives, friends and telephone company executives honored her at a tea attended by 200 persons. At this time she was presented with a gift of money as well as a set of matched luggage. Tea was poured by Mrs. Irene Lockman, former Elgin chief operator, and Miss Lillian Stilling of McHenry, Miss Marshall's assistant here for many years. The Friendship club, which includes employees of the company, also hosted a gathering in which she was presented with a wrist watch. In behalf of the company, Mr. Cantrels, district traffic manager, presented her with a diamond set brooch. Certainly a cherished possession of her retirement was a letter received from J. Debutts, president of the Illinois Bell company, who wrote as follows: "I wish to congratulate you upon completion of your many years of loyal! service. In your thirty-nine years with Illinois Bell, you have earned an excellent reputation for the capable manner in which you have handled your assignments. "It must be a source of satisfaction to you to have played an important part in the telephone business. May your retirement bring you the fullest measure of happiness and good health." The thousands whom Miss Marshall served during her many years as chief operator in McHenry certainly join in this tribute to her loyalty and efficiency, especially during times of difficulty when her service extended well beyond the call of duty to assist her fellow townspeople. Miss Marshall's interest in the telephone business came naturally. Her father, the late William R. Marshall, was manager of the Chicago Telephone company's McHenry Office during the early 1900's. Her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Meyers, maintained in their home headquarters of another phone company about the same time and it was through mutual interest in the phone business of the two families that her parents became acquainted.
