The finest entertainment ever presented in the McHenry area was watched by a capacity crowd at the McHenry Country club last Saturday evening, when the McHenry Township GOP organization sponsored their annual fund raising event. A succulent prime rib dinner was served to about 300, and tables had to be removed and chairs set up so all could view the show. Diane Merrill, a combination of blonde delight, talent, and a tremendous capacity for reaching an audience "brought down the house." She returned for about four encores. She sang several numbers, did comedy routines and impersonations of many well known show business performers. Following her first appearance, Raye and Roman, billed as the world's greatest acro-adagio dance team, lived up to their billing. Working in a space too small for their routine, they displayed the greatest of talent. Miss Merrill appeared again before the star of the evening, Henny Youngman, made his entrance. For about forty more minutes, the gathering was treated to the very best in comedy combined with dry wit. Henny Youngman has a name as well known in show business as Jack Benny, George Jessel, Eddy Cantor and the rest of the big time comedy personalities. Following this performance at the Country club, he was scheduled for a guest appearance on the Johnny Carson show last Tuesday evening, and then he returns to Las Vegas, where he is under contract. He is also the author of a new book making its appearance on stands in the near future, titled "400 Best Jokes." Master of ceremony roles were shared by Anthony Varese and Jake Levesque. Before the entertainment began, Mr. Varese asked the audience to rise for one moment of silence and prayer for the country's fallen president. Many notables in the political field were present including Congressman and Mrs. Robert McClory, Senator and Mrs. John Graham of Barrington, and Senator and Mrs. Robert Coulsen of Waukegan. None of them were introduced because of the President's death. Mayor Donald Doherty of McHenry was on hand, but Mrs. Dcherty was still hospitalized following the birth of their eighth child. An outstanding personality in the field of television news commentators, Len O'Connor, was a member of the audience. There is no question about the fact that a new high in presenting fine entertainment was achieved by the McHenry Township Republican Central committee John Licastro is the chairman of this grcup and he served on Mr. Varese's committee. Others were Jake Levesque, Joe Frett, Chuck Miller, and assistance from the group's treasurer, Phil Doherty.
