THE McHENBY PLAINDEALEH Thursday, December 12, 1963 TIME-- We will start out with a phone call from "Mac", who wants you basketball fans to know that game time has been set up to 6:45 p.m. In other words, the Soph games have been moved up 15 minutes. This will also get the varsity games started earlier. New rules this year have made a big, /difference in the length of /games. The clock Is stoppeo, each time the ball ifs takei^ out of bounds and an Official must handle the ball. I We xhaven't found the new rule very popular. For one thing, those boards get hard ^after a couple of hours. So please remember. Games will start 15 minutes earlier. The schools hope you will like the change. WARRIOR CAGERS DEFEAT LIBERTYYILLE AND PALATINE FOR FIRST PLACE LOOP TIE Those Warriors have been a bit of a surprise. They pulled a great comeback at Libertyvilie after a slow second quarter. The next night they stayed with their chores to beat a Palatine five that is better than their record shows. Butch Meyer was hot on shots at Libertyville to lift the team from apparent defeat. Against Palatine, Butch played his headiest and steadiest gamo of his career, in our book. The way he passed that ball, set Up plays and fed the ball to his mates was beautiful. Ken Laurance, in rugged condition after the football season, looked real good on rebounds and picked up on his scoring. The first night we saw him, it was our opinion that he could be a key man in the team's success this year. Bob Mayfield continues to follow the play in good style. Many fans think Bob's defensive play was a big factor in the victory at Libertyville. And, not too many thought the Fulton boys could win that one. (We were one of those akeptics.) Rich Smith makes you like more each game. He is the play maker and can either hit from outside, drive in or roll out like a quarterback to get points. Fred Kusch, the biggest man in the conference, has been a target for other teams and unfn tunately for some unsportsmanlike sports from others parts. Fred is well liked, but many sports fans like to see a little fellow get the best o<" a big guy. Fred led the scoring ag.'.inst Palatine and is ratr-d the big man in many ways. By Gene Brooke McHenry downed Libertyville 56-51, and Palatine 66-55 over the weekend and now share the conference lead with Crystal Lak§. The Warriors" are off to a fine start, but still must face their toughest competition. Next week Barrington will test the Warriors and Woodstock will be their competition the following week. Wins over these two teams would put us in excellent position to end up high in the conference. At Libertyville Friday night, the Warriors looked bad in the first half and trailed by 13 points at one time. Even though the Warriors were outrebounding the Libertyville Wildcats, they just couldn't sink their shots. Just as things began to look hopeless, "Butch" Meyer came to the rescue. "Butch" brought us to within 6 points at the half and then led the Warriors to the lead. Although no one seems to know for sure, "Butch"' must have made about 10 or 12 straight points for the Warriors during this time. It was a truly outstanding performance. The Warriors then caught fire and won the game 56-51. Lend All The Way The Warriors led all throughout the Palatine game here Saturday night. Palatine played their best game of the year -- but the Warriors were too strong for them. Laurence was in complete control of the boards as he pulled down 26 rebounds. Playing consistent ball, the Warriors were led by Kush, Laurence and Smith. Kusch and Smith carried the load the first half with Laurence scoring most of his points in the last half. Mayfield played a good game and scored 6 points. Bob has averaged 7 points a game this year and has been one of our more consistent players. While he didn't score much, Meyer made some fine passes that led to Warrior scores. It was a real team effort and all the boys showed a lot of spirit and desire. Next week we play Barrington. A win could mean a lot and the boys will appreciate any support you can give them. Try to make the game. We have mentioned Chris Newkirk as a big help to the team. The same goes for Gary Lockwood. Tom Blake has also helped in sports. All will see action. We will keep our eye on some cf the o.her boys who are just waiting to show they belong. A big test is coming up for Coach Fulton's boys Friday night when the Barrington Bi'oncos hit town. Coach Jack Thomas has his Soph team rolling along good again this year. It often seems like a big jump to the varsity, but some of these boys will be ready next year. We have been watching that "Let Hertz Put You In The Driver's Seat" and notice they now have a gal floating down from space with the man. If they want her to help drive, why don't they drop her into the back seat? We will have to get our scouting system and grapevine working better. For instance, nobody told us about Billy Pries (Ye Olde Tree Trimmer) and his experience last summer. Bill was really out on a limb and saved by the ropes. We should have known! VIATOR Coach Gubbins Has Three McHenry Boys In Starting Lineup By Mike Wie*er Marian Central Catholic high school traveled to St. Viator's of Arlington Heights last Saturday evening for their first basketball game of the season (a previous game against Milwaukee Pius XI was canceled because of the president's death) losing to a well balanced team, 55-45. Coach Joe Gubbins started three McHenry boys, seniors Clarence Adams and Jon Meyer and Junior Paul Nitz. rounding out his first squad with Senior Pete Parker and Junior Tim Murphy from Woodstock. Marian steamed to a 10-4 lead, in the first two minutes of the ball game and commanded a 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. Paul Nitz, with three tip-in shots and a total of eight points, led the Marian first quarter scorers, followed by Clarence Adams' six points. St. Viator's came r6arlng back with a balanced scoring attack to outscore Marian 16-7 in the second quarter and lead at the half 29 to 23. With big Paul Nitz picking up the slack and dumping in ten points in the third quarter. Marian found themselves with only a two point deficit at the end of the third stanza, 38-36. Roof Caves In! The tempo was increased in the fourth quarter and Marian scored two baskets and five free throws to take the lead 45-40 with five minutes remaining in the game. Then the roof caved in. First, Nitz fouled out, and then Pete Parker hit the b e n c h w i t h h i s f i f t h f o u l . S t . Viator's then scored fifteen points and held Marian scoreless the remaining five minutes for a final outcome of 55-45. Although Marian outscored St. Viator's from the field, 18 field goals to 15, St. Viatw^s won the game from the charity lane, hitting 25 for 33, while Marian was awarded only 9 for 14. Paul Nitz was high scorer with 10 field golds and 4 free throws for a total of 24, with Murray of St. Viators second high man with 7 field goals and 5 free throws for a total of 19 points. Hurricane hints: Marian's next game will be on their home court against St. Ignatius of Chicago,,. Friday eye-, ning, Dec. 13, and then they travel to Maryville of Des Plaines for a Saturday evening contest, Dec. 14. ; Coach Gubbins is faced with a tremendous rebuilding job this season, after losing 11 of his 15 man squad thru graduation. He has brought up 2 sophomores to his varsity squad, guard Denny Jacksoto of McHenry and 6'6" center Dave Kordenbrock from Crystal Lake, both men are ex- I>ected to see plenty of varsity action this season. He summed it up by saying that in his large city dealership he rarely knew his custom ers personally and almost never met them socially. But since moving to a smaller center the opposite was now true -- he seldom DOESN'T know the people who are buying from him. Quite a few on a first name basis and many as personal friends. He admitted that he now felt compelled to be scrupulously honest with his customers for the obvious reason that if he ran his business any other way, word would soon get around and his business would differ. This basic truth about the car business accounts for the fact that a "wheel and deal" dealer, to use the trade slang, can't operate successfully in a small town or city. He must pull buyers from miles around, usually on a basis of misleading price ads or similar gin> mick claims. It logically follows that since he doesn't expect to see his customers again (the distance involved quickly discourages driving back for service or complaints) this type of dealer considers his out-of-town buyers fair game for every type of corner cutting that will squeeze an extra dollar of profit out of the sale. If you deal out of your own town or city with this type of operator on the understandable desire to "save" a few dollars, you are likely to regret it, as thousands of buyers who have will testify.
