Otto Kernel-, through an official proclamation, issued a Christmas holiday traffic alert plea to all motorists calling attention to the hazards of holklay driving. The proclamation designates the period of ,^c. 13 through Jan.2, 1JHS4, as the holiday season for traffic accident prevention purposes. In addition, the Governor called for a steppedpublic inform.ition program f( r the •holidays. "During the actual holiday hours, I have ordered tjie Illinois State Highway Police 1o observe 'Traffic Condition Red', as in the past," the governor said. "Traffic fatalities have been exceeding last year's by some 9 per cent. Early in the year I called a series of emer- | gency conferences in an effort to secure the wholehearted support of local authorities. They have responded well, bu' this is not enough. During 1961 we will redouble our efforts for safer motor travel and will seek further cooperation of local agencies." * Traditionally, the "Traffic Condition Red" alert means that leaves or flays olf are cancelled for all State Poiice. Their efforts normally are supplemented by Secretary of Stale investigators. Although speed in itself is questioned as a m-'jor cause ol accidents by some. Gov. Keener has asked that all motorists reduce their speed by ID miles an hour during the holidays as a safety precaution. "This reduced s[x5ed may not reduce accidents per s<\ though persons observing my request will find themselves driving in a more relaxed frarrv' of mind," the governor said. LEAGUE URGES TAXPAYERS TO CHECK ASSESSMENT xl_ ^ Check your assessment carefully, is the advice of the Govcrnint n* Improvement League. Your pockctbook may look like an honor graduate of a reducing salon if McHenry 1 county assessments increase as much with the present reassessment as with the last, stated the League. McHenry county led all coun- < ties in Illinois in percentage inA-ease in assessments during the period 1957-1960, according to information released by the State Department of Revenue. Not only was the i^ercentage greater than r.nywhere else, in the State but it was over 2'/3 times as great as the State average. Shortly following the college referendum, the League believes that the new assessment will be published so that all will get their first look at them in most townships. One has only 10 days following publication to decide whether his assessment is equitable - and this may be right in the midst of holiday preparations. If one feels the assessment is not equitable, he may appeal to the Board of Review Within those ten days, using forms secured from Assessor Cornu.?'s office in Woodstock. If an appeal isn't made within those ten days, the assessment sticks. . The new assessments will be as shocking to McHenry county's 90,000 people as they were four years ago if McHenry county retains the dubious honor of increasing mor£ than any other county, the League feels. URGE SAFETY BE INCLUDED IN DECORATING PLAN Frankfurters were first made in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1559. Local home owners planning i to brighten their homes with ' holiday lighting arc reminded by Public Servfbe company to include safety, in their decorating plans. Clifford W. Rezny. district superintendent of the utility, offers these tips to householders: Check all lighting sets, cords and sockets and repair worn or broken parts. Do not connect lights until they are attached to the tree, house or decorative frames. Don't conncct too mai>y lights to a single electrical circuit. The capacity of a 15-ampere circuit is about 18000 watts. If an overload blows a fuse, some lights should be switched to another circuit. Outside the house, only weatherproof lighting equipment and extension cords should be used. The best, source of power for exterior^'lighting is a permant outdoor-type receptacle. Tree lighting indoors should be used only when someone is at home, Rezny cautioned. Trees should stand in water. When needles begin to turn brown, remove the tree from the house. Metallic trees should be floorlighted -- never attach strings of lights. C. A. Shoppers are those with a Charge Account at GLADSTONE'S, INC. Nativity Lutheran Church News vOn Saturday, Dec. 21, the Luther League will hold its Christmas party in the social hall at 7:30 p.m. Christmas Eve (Tuesday) at 11:30 p.m.-The Holy Communion. Paul Eberle and Sam Lamont addressed the group of parents present on advancement in Scouting. Mr. Lamont presented the awards to the boys. Refreshments were served following the meeting. A Christmas party was planned for the last meeting before Christinas, Dec. 18. Garden Club Christmas Party The Wonder Lake Garden club had its regular monthly meeting followed by the annual Christmas party on Thursday, Dec. 12. Roll call was answertd by each member given a suggestion for programs for the coming year. A letter from Millie Klebert - a former member who has moved away from the Lake and now enjoys her holidays in the sunny southwas read to the members. The meeting and party was held at the home of Mrs. Charles Kopp - who is a real "pro" when it comes to making beautiful decorations for her home and I am told that this year they were outstanding. The arrangement on display at the post office at present was made by Vi Kopp and it will remain there until the first part of January when it will be replaced by one made by Mrs. Johnson. All these girls do beautiful work and the club is proud of them Those present at the party were the hostess Vi Kopp, Betty Fiala, Mrs. A. Johnson, Bertha Gillette, Maybcllo Nelson, Ada Numbers, Elsie Ottoson, Mrs. R. J. Wielock and the president, Dorothy McEachren. The grab bag gift exchange was lots of fun and helped compensate for the fact that the ladies had to go out and brave the wintery blasts to go home.
