We have many children incapcitated from this disease in the area and the school which cares for them, located in Crystal Lake, is doing a magnificant job. This Sunday, Jan. 12, volunteer mothers will be calling door to door for your contribution. Last year, we made an excellent showing with a total of over $120. We can easily match that this year, and better! It doesn't take a great deal from any one trontributor. Marie McKim is in charge of the detail and handles it effeciently and well. A kick-off dinner and fashion show will be held Saturday n|ght. Jan- H. in Crystal Lake, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available from this reporter and the number to call is 385- 3191. Police Magistrate Heads World War 1 Barracks . i The man who has been elect- pSene ed to the office of police magistrate every time since we incorporated was awarded another top honor. In solemn rites, Victor Howe was elevated to the position of commander of the World War 1 Barracks, McHenry post, last Thursday night. He is also a charter member of the organization and was instrumental in its founding. It is entirely fitting that he should now have this command. Another local m&n will be serving as his trustee. Odon Hubsch was installed on the sams evening. At some future date, the men plan to have a dinner which will include the wives and the new officers will preside. Other, men from the community who are a part of this organization includes Carl Berquist, "Duffy" Benson, Jim CEJTOH, Sr.,. Bill Hecht, Harry Lock and Joseph Melka. Ladies Will Meet Tonight The regularly scheduled meeting of the Ladies of the Lake will be held at 8 p.m. tonight in the beachhouse. All women of the community are cordially invited to attend. Cars Clobbered Statistics prove that more accidents occur over the Christmas--New Year holidays than at any other time of the year. Many of our residents can attest to that fact! several vehicles went "down the drain" and are beyond repair, but it is with a great deal of JOY that we print no known injuries or fatalities, involved in the accidents were young, old, and " those who wish they fit either category. Several of the accidents could have had dire consequences1. Heart Patient Recovering Three small attacks and one big one sent Chet Helwig to McHenry hospital three weeks ago. After he was confined, he suffered several more lesser ones and another big one which caused him and Gert a great deal of concern. According to the medico's diagnosis on Monday, Chet was informed he may be discharged today m'-tomorrow. He will be convalescing at home for several'weeks, but^. hopes to return to work in the near future. During "his confinement, Chet's heart (figuratively speaking) was deeply touched by a thoughful gesture. It seems that young lassies of the Big Hollow Brownie Troop, No. 109 under the guidance of their leader, made Christmas gifts for the patients at the hospital and one appeared on each tray. No doubt that all who received them were equally pleased, but Chet has a very warm spot for all kids! Don't forget to keep those well wishes "rolling in, they shorten the recovery time! Ill For The Big Holiday With a lovely new frock and shoes purchased for New Year's Eve festivities, it was a mighty disappointed Mayda Shigley who was confined to her bed for that occasion. When her condition didn't improve, she w,as ordered to McHenry hospital on New Year's Day. Mayda was discharged last weekend, and is well on the mend, but still feeling a bit puny. She promises to have her special pccasion and use the new outfit, just as soon as she is ab)e. founds like hubby better don his dancing' slippers. Speaking of Gene, ne fared very well in that department (Dancing) wlien his place of employment held >their annual Christmas party which he and Earl Nelson attended. Gene and his lovely partner won the wait/ contest (»again) and were presented with handsome trophies. Dons Cast For New Year A pleasurable evening changed to pain and anguish for Marge'Thomsen on New Year's Eve. Efuring the fun and frolic shared by hubby Fred, the Sawdos, and Osterbys, Marge fell and suffered a broken wrist. She was taken to McHenry hospitalv where the injured member was put in a cast. She will be wearing that unwanted garment for several weeks. Long Time Resident SuoMiinhs Private services for Frank Pitroff were arranged by his sons, Herbert of Rochester, N. Y., and Rudolph of Chicago, just before the New Year. Mr. Pitroff died in hi& home, apparently of natural causes on Dec. 27. His body was discovered by Lil Sawdo who kept in contact with him every dayi Born in Germany, Mr. Pitroff thought enough of his adopted country to become a naturalized citizen. In spite of his 87 years, Mr. Pitrcff was very active and was extremely concerned with guarding his health. Pen Pais Become Real Chums While both were students in high school in their respective countries, Anita Mass Mahon and Miss. Jillian (Ji'tf) Wells of Stanmore, Middlesex, England (near London) became pen pals. In 1959, while Anita was touring the continent, she and her correspondent became fast friends, when Anita visited her home. Miss Wells has a Fulbright schplarship and -is attending Southern ' Illinois University, Carbondale. She is studying for her master's degree in geography and was a guest in the Dan McMahon home over the holidays. v/-- In her Honor, Anita and Dan held a reception for their honored guest on Dec. 29. During her visit, they have made many jaunts to points of interest including Milwaukee. A trip through the breweries proved fascinating. Miss Wells is combining teaching along with the pursuit of her studies and has hopes of returning to the village next summer. She will leave for her home in England next Christmas. We know how thrilled Anita was to have her lovely visitor and the children were delighted with their new, "aunt." be, Marge and Ed Stacknick welcomed their bandstime sailor lad with open amis when he came home on a &0 day leave. No doubt that Navy ®chow agrees witji Butch and he is enjoying his work immensely. Hie' is stationed on a ship, based at/ San Diego, Calif. It was wonderful to see him, and very gratifying to know that he an " our other young service nudn are doing so well. Sailor Son On Leave Proud, and well they might / "Holi-Daze" if New Year's Eve parties were enjoyed throughout the village. The younger set in the village used the holidays as a good excuse for parties. Some who entertained on various evenings included Janet Hansen, Da\vn5- Parenti, Karen McKim, and Don Nelson... .Sally and Papa Olsen spread the "welcome mat" for Papa's tribe on Christmas Eve. Included in the guest list were Shirley Olsen's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Nielsen, who spent this holiday in the north. They hail from Florida (and weren't looking forward to returning to their frigid temperatures). Shirley was toiling at McHenry hospital while everyone else was celebrating.. .Theresa and Willard Schultz were happy to "break bread" with the Henry Houcks and the Oberhubers on Christmas Day. .Jean and Hugh McDonald ; provided holiday feasts for son, Ed, and his lovely Barbara and May and Butch Kennenberg, .Bobbie and Jim Carroll motored to Posen, Hi., and spent Christmas with Jim's son and family? Help The Vets At Downey Bobbie Carroll, rehabilitation chairman for^.the American Legion auxiliary, is busy ollecting* magazines, books, and playing cards, for the veterans confined to Downey hospital. She will be making her trip there in the near future and needs diversion material for them. Bobbie < is also assisting Dorothy Diedrich in her campaign to acquire labels, trading stamps and coupons to aid crippled children. If you have contributions for either or both categories, please call 385-- 3615 and Bobbie will be eternally grateful. Family Reunion Joy reigned supreme in the Harold Vycital household last Sunday when all of their progeny gathered around them. Mr. and Mrs. John Vycital and their 3 month old Vikki motored, home from the east coast, Doh was home on a weekend pass\ from his base in Milwaukee, and Elaine and Frank were present for dinner. Suzie and D. G. were thrilled, with the thought of being aunties and played with the wee one. Excellent cook that she is, we know that Henrietta enjoyed displaying her effljnary abilities. Discovers Proficiency While Confined V Clever boy Ron Wilson won acclaim in Belmont hospital with his artistic portraits while confined recently. Much to his alarm, he discovered that he was losing weight steadily and not trying to! This was unusual because his difficulty was in the other direction. He entered the hospital right after Christmas and many tests were made. His illness was discovered to be diabetes which means, that Joyce now gives him the "needle" without being accused of nagging! We really don't mean to be facetious, because both of them are taking the diagnosis in stride. Fortunately, it was discovered early and with the discovery of ir^sulin, it is no longer a fearful disease. Ron entertained himself and the patients in Belmont with his charcoal sketches, including one of the late president, of wheh both he and Joyce are very proud.
