For centuries lepers were considered unclean and cursed by God. In the Middle Ages slifferers of this disease were outcasts from social con- ' tact and declared legally dead. In fact, at one time in history, it was the leper's to,t to wander hopelessly, hoodt**^ and carrying a bell to warn of his approach. In time, however, it was learned that the disease posed extremely little danger of communication and the possibility of arrest and cure offers more encouragement today than at any time in centuries.
