BUSINESS FIRMS MAKE GOOD USE OF NEW ZIP CODE Postmaster LeRoy Smith reported today that business firms,- which account for 80 per cent of the nation's first class mail, are making good use of the nation-wide ZIP Cpde to help speed . their deliveries, a Posit Office department progress report showed. At the same time, a department spokesman said, the general public was showing increasing signs of accepting the five-digit coding system^ for addressing mail, indicating a smooth transition to the time, two years hence, when the mail will be sorted electronically by optical scanning machines in the country's larger post offices. Meanwhile, instructions will be mailed this week to the nation's postmasters on how to number their distribution cases so that the mail can be sorted manually according to its ZIP Code. , Although distribution of the instructions was held up during the holidays, McHenry and a few other post offices went ahead with the process on their own initiative. All post offices have a period of three weeks to follow suit, thus stimulating greater internal use of Zip Code by ' the department during the transition period. * The report from the department's fifteen regions to extensive use of ZIP Code during the Christmas season by bcth public and large volume mailers, although no effort was made to learn the ratio f.o total volume. However, of 24,100 firms reached through December, the report said that 21,000 --4*8 per cent--agreed to participate in the program.
