McCullom Lake HIEEAA RT FUND Vr QL CALL -UN IS TEERS WILL UNDAY Eve Loveaque This Sunday, Feb. 23, has been designated as Heart Sunday, and volunteers will be calling for your collection. Theresa Sehultz and Barbara Thacker are serving as co-chairmen for the local drive for funds. They will be assisted by many women in the community who give up a portion of their time from their families to perform this valuable service. Heart disease is still one of the most deadly killers in every age bracket. Many youngsters are born every year with congenital heart defects, but thanks to heart fund dollars, many of these children can be completely cured or at least restored to useful existences. Locally, we have lost many of our citizens to this dread disease and your contribution can substantially lower the rate. "The more you give -the more will live." In the event you will not be home-when your volunteer worker calls, please use the envelope left on your doorstep. Simply place your contribution inside and mail it to the Mc- Henry State bank. Our community will be credited with the amount. New Squad Car Planned For Village With the cost of repairs to the old vehicle becoming almost prohibitive, the police commission has requested a new squad car for the police department. The present one has given good service for 6 years, but the wear and tear is beginning to show. Art Nelson, police commissioner, and Bill Creutz, in charge of finance, will be working together on this project. Howard Voss, Jr., of Municipal Research Association addressed the board and the large group of interested spectators who showed up for the last meeting, Feb. 10. According to Mr. Voss, preparations for the referendum on the sanitary disposal plant will take a few months, which means the referendum will probably come before the voters sometime in May. Brochures outlining the plan in its entirety will be prepared and each resident wili be contacted and the proposal explained in detail. The new road proposed by H. H. Mass has been started but the work has been delayed because of weather conditions. The project was discussed by the village board. It will be completed in the spring to the mutual benefit of all concerned. The next meeting will be held Monday, Feb. 24, at 8 p.m. in the beachhouse. The public is invited. Pep Injection For Teen Club Rich Johnson, the neV sponsor of the McCullom Lake Teen Club, has given the younger generation renewed enthusiasm and vigor for their organization. At the last meeting held Tues^ day, Feb. 11, there were about twenty young men and ladies on hand. Social and program committees were formed and the kids plan many activities in the coming months. First excursion is a hockey game at the Stadium in Chicago to see the Blackhawks. Money for this trip must be in the hands of Bill Brennan by this Saturday! The kids also plan on going skiing, and to the roller derby, At the next meeting, they will view a film presented by the state police. We think it concerns safe driving practices. We are happy to know this organization is not going to fall by the wayside. From this group comes the future leaders of our community AND beyond. They need encouragement and assistance from all of us. Icy Roads Prove Hazardous At least one car hit the ditch early Monday morning, but we are quite confident that no one was injured. As we were driving down the McCullom Lake blacktop early Monday a.m., \Ve passed two young men on foot 'headed ' back toward the village. A few blocks further, we came upon the reason. A black car was laying on its side in the ditch beyond the Clem Wirfs home. Florida Jaunt Jean and Hugh McDonald returned home last Thursday, after spending weeks in Miami Beach. GEORGE P. FREW Phone 385-0420 Auxiliary. This project sponsored by the American Le'gion Auxiliary, Department of Illinois, is for the purpose of providing citizenship training for Illinois girls who are members of Lhe Junior high school class. This year's session will bo held on MacMurray college campus, Jacksonville June 16 to 23, wilh an enrollment of approximately 500. Mrs. Lingenfelter stated that the local unit will sponsor a girl, whose attendance will be financed by the unit. Selection of the applicant is made by asking the faculty members of the McHenry high school to prepare a list of eligible girls who have leadership qualities and who through attributes of interest in civics and government, good character, self-reliance honesty and cooperativeness have contrite uted to the high morale of the school and community. Scholastic rating and physical fitness are other requirements. The final selection of the girl will be in the hands of- the local unit. ' Illini Girls State is managed by a commission made up of leaders of the American Legion Auxiliary, who make the plans and set the policies for this program, subject to the approval of the state board of directors of the American Lei^ ion Auxiliary. The educational pattern is handled by a staff of auxiliary members experienced in teaching government procedure. Former citizens of Illini Girls State serve as junior counselors. Activities get under way immediately upon the opening of the session through forming two political parties. As the mythical state government is formed, conventions are held, nomination of candidates take place and campaigns are conducted. Elections take place first pn the city and county level and progress to the state election, all patterned along the lines of the election laws of the state of Illinois. After the newly elected state officers are installed, all functions of the government are carried out -- executive, legislative and judicial. During the session, two representatives are chosen to attend the American Legion Auxiliary's Girls' Nation held in Washington, D. C, where government is taught on a national level. One day is spent in Springfield, where the girls meet the Governor of Illinois and tour various state buildings. A trip to the tomb of Abraham Lincoln is included. On Sunday, each girl attends the church of her choice and then visits with her parents and guests during the afternoon reception for the alumnae of Illini Girls State. Mrs. Lingenfelter states: "With leadership in government fo vital to the welfare of our country, today, we feel that American Legion Auxiliary is making an outstanding contribution in preparing our leaders of tomorrow to accept the great responsibilities which will be theirs." The McHenry County Council held their February meeting in Hebron. President Betty Lingenfelter, Pearl Cooper, Ruth Mrachek, Dorothy Herdrich, Marie Howe, Mary Kantorski, Dorothy Weichmann and Delia Freund represented the McHenry ynit. A donation was made by the council to the Mary Lee Davis education fund. The county legislative chairman urges all members to write to their congressmen and senators asking them to please endorse the many important legislative matters supported by the American Legion.
