Thursday, March 19,1984 THE McHENRT PLAINDEALER Johnsburg SODALITY SETS COMMUNION DAY SUNDAY MARCH 22 Betty Hettermann At the 8 o'clock Mass next Sunday, the officers and members of the Blessed Virgin Sodality will receive communion in a body at St. John's church. There will be no breukfast on this date. Please note the Mass is at 8 o'clock next Sunday. Speaking of the Blessed Virgin Sodality -- they are sponsoring a luncheon and card party on April 8. This event will be held in the community club hall at 12:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from any of the officers. Please make an extra effort to attend this luncheon. The proceeds of this endeavor will go towards the new convent. Let's be sure therp is an unusually big attendance at this party! "King for a Day" Richard May reigned as "king for a day" on March 11. The occasion was his thirtyfifth birthday. He is still young enough to admit his age! He was joined for dinner at a local restaurant that evening by his father, Bill May, his sister and husband, Catherine and Richard Dehn, and his aunt and uncle, Emma and Art Kattner. Still later that same evening, he was really "shook" when about forty people gathered at the Gerry Hettermann home to surprise him lor a further birthday celebration. He will long remember this birthday! We all join in wishing him many, many more in the future. Sewing; Guild Meets Fifteen members and five guests were present recently when the Pink Ladies Sewing Guild of the Women's Auxiliary to the McHenry hospital met - in the home of Theresa Kelly in McHenry. Representing this area were Esther Knapp, Tillie Ahrens and Mildred Kennedy. The hostess served a most delicious dessert luncheon after which a successful white elephant sale was held. Birthday Notes March is the month for celebration for a mother - daughter duo. Mrs. Dorothy Himplemann and Mary are both offsprings of March. Coming up on Saturday, March 21, is the natal day of Harry Smith. Best wishes to all! Hospital Corner Albert Pepping, Sr., is still a patient in the McHenry hospital where he was admitted a few weeks ago. Please continue to remember him in your daily prayers. On crutches as a result of recent surgery is Dick Hiller. He spent several days last week in the McHenry hospital where he had some bone chips removed from his fool. I was sorry to learn that "Pete" Peterson's dad has been quite ill and confined to the McHenry hospital also. We sincerely hope he will soon be well and able to return to his son's home. Mrs. Fred Karpenski accompanied hpr daughter-in-law to Rochester, Minn., last week where Jim Comstock junderwent surgery in St. Mary's hospital on Thursday. He will be there for a few; f weeks so I'm sure he will be most happy to hear from his many friends. Julia returned home Friday afternoon but Carol will remain with her husband. Be sure to get a card or note in the mail right now. His address is: James Comstock, St. Mary's Hospital, 2nd St. S.W. - Room 5-280, Rochester, Minn. Father Passes On Mrs. Helen Knight was called out of town by the passing of her father last week. Funeral services were conducted near the Delis in Wisconsin Saturday morning. We all join in extending our sympathies to Helen, her mother and the remaining survivors. Coming Events When St. John's Home-and School Association meets on March 23 Bert Boerner, county probation officer, will be their guest speaker. His talk should prove most interesting. All parents are invited to be on hand at this meeting. A dance titled "Spring Fling" will be sponsored by St. John's Home and School Association in the community club on April 18. Contact any of the members for tickets. Once again a reminder to purchase your tickets for the annual ladies ni^ht banquet sponsored by the Johnsburg Community Club. Better get going or you will be out of luck. Observes 90th Birthday Ourr congratulations to Joe M. Schaefer who turned 90 years young on March 9. He observed this day by accompaning Ben and Hilda Thelen and daughter, Kathy, to Richmond, where they visited his two daughters, Sister Jacob and Sister Victricia. A large celebration for Mr. Schaefer's birthday is planned for a later date. "And Now We Have Five" That's just what. Richard and Catherine Dehn said in the wee hours of Monday morning, March 16, in a McHenry hospital room. The couple welcomed a very healthy 9 lb. 7V& oz. -- 22 inch long, daughter just a little past one that morning.. They have another daughter Carol Ann, 14, at home. Also there are three lively young boys there, John, age 12, Joey, age 10, and Mark, who is 4%. Proud grandfathers are John Dehn of Chicago and Bill May of Johnsburg. Many happy wishes to the Dehn family. Rescue Squad Calls The Johnsburg rescue squad were called to Worthmoor Estates la$t; Sunday where a victim suffered possible respiratory trouble. An ambulance removed the patient to the McHenry hospital. This call brings the running count to 2,346. Hooray! Hooray! Hooray! If there was morie room I might add a few more cheers. The burst of enthusiasm is for our local basketball teams. Our town team won over Cary in the semi-finals of the Northern Illinois Amateur Basketball league tournament last Saturday by a 99 to 64 score. They came back on Sunday to defeat Harvard, 80 to 67, thus capturing the championship. They also are the champs in the heavyweight division of the recent C.O.F. tournament. Congratulations also to the seniors who came out on top in the same tournament played in the Mc Henry high school gym. ALL FOR THE CHURCH The Church is the greatest factor on earth for the building of character and good citizenship. It is a storehouse of spiritual values. Without a strong church, neither democracy nor civilization can survive. There are four sound reasons why every person should attend services regularly and support the church. They are: (1) For his own sake. (2) For his children's sake, (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the sake of the church itself, which needs his moral and material support. Plan to go to church regularly and read your Bible daily. Sur What do you see liere? Figures of statuary? A symbol of religion? A monument to the Master? Look with your heart and you'll see something else. You'll see the. soul of the sculptor. A man mightily inspired -- who wanted with his talents to worship Christ -- who took stone aM <sMs®l and hammer .., and all the strength of his body . . . and all the faith of his heart. He said to jthe world with his Art-Words that which he couldnever have spoken with his lips nor written with his pen. For twenty centuries Jesus,, the Saviour, has inspired our best. In the annals of mankind a million thrilling breakthroughs in human achievement have been dedicated ft® His servie®. So never pass the hurattat creation of sacred art -- not even the crayoned Bible-picture of a child -- without remembering that you too have a soul.
