THE McHENHY PLAINDEALEH Twice Told Tales Thursday, May 7. 1984 • FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 8, 1924) Manager Clarence Niesen of the Fox dancing pavilion, located on the McHenry Pistakee Bay road a short distance from this city, is announcing that the opening dance will take place on Thursday evening, May 29. For the opening there will be dancing on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. The Chicago & North Western railroad company will start its full summer schedule thrpugh the city of McHenry on Sunday, May 25. Miss Rose.Huemann returned home last Friday from Pensacola, Fla., where she had been spending the past several weeks. The junior class play, a threeact comedy entitled "The Charm School", attracted a capacity house at the Empire theatre last Thursday evening and together with the excellent special numbers proved an entertainment of real merit. More beautiful than ever and with prospects for another big season, the McHenry Country club opened its regular greens last Saturday and since then the grounds have been the scene of much activity. The baseball season will witness its official opening next Sunday afternoon when the locals take on the Cary outfit as the first game of hte season. The members of the Harmony club tendered Mr. and Mrs. F .C. Feltz a very pleasant surprise at their newly acquired home on John street. Although the victims were not prepared, they soon recovered from the shock following the sudden invasion of their unexpected guests. N. F. Colby, proprietor of the local riding academy, has again opened the riding season. During the winter months he has added a number of excellent riders to his string of horses and before the summer is well on its way he expects to have at least forty horses. and Adelia, Mrs. Roy Miller, Mrs. R. Jager, Mrs. Alex Justen and Mrs. Alvin Phannenstill. The boys were under the able direction of Daniel Justen of McHenry and Alvin Querhammer of Crystal Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stoller announce the engaginent of their daughter, Carol Sue, to David S. Page, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester J. Page. The wedding will take place July 10. The McHenry county baseball league schedule tells us that the 54 race will get under way next Sunday, May 9. The McHenry Shamrocks will be hosts to the Johnsburg Tigers, the game to be played on the city diamond in Millstream Park addition. Charles Hiller, Rt. 5, McHenry, a sophomore at the College of St^ Thomas in St. Paul, Minn, is beginning his second year as a varsity regular on the Tommy baseball team. The new and modern shoe store of Peter Gies on Riverside Drive held its grand opening last weekend. Seniors are in final rehearsals for their annual play, "Quality Street", which will take place Fi-iday night, May 7. The May meeting of the Past Matrons club, No. 657, was held at the home of Mrs. Valeske Hoppe of Wonder Lake last Monday evening. Legal? April 23-30, May 7, 1964) DRo ADDISON SEHIOR EDITOR FOR NEW BOOK TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 4, 1939) Robert Schaefer and Thomas Sutton, safety patrol boys of our local grade schools, were two of five boys in the county chosen as outstanding members of the patrol system. They will receive medals from the Chicago Motor club and be guests at a luncheon in that city on May 11, which will be attended by more than 1,000 youngsters from ninety-six counties in Illinois and Indiana. The City Council of McHenry has spent a busy week. The annual meeting, a special meeting and the regular May meeting, kept the wheels of city government revolving at high speed, starting Friday of last weekend and ending Monday night of this week. Items of special interest plucked from the records pertain to changes in personnel. McHenry has a new alderman, a new policeman, a new fire chief and a new assistant fire chief. A. E. Nye, prominent west side jeweler, who has been active in civic affairs for many years, took his place about the Council table Friday evening. Changes have also taken place in appointive officers. Jack Smith has been appointed to succeed Pete Wirfs, who has been night policeman for the past few years. Under a new arrangement, the chief, John Wirtz, will share the night patrol duties with Officer Smith. August Freund has been named the new fire chief, with Ed. Smith designated as assistant chief. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Miller, who have been making their home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Miller, on Richmond road, have purchased the Henry Kamholz house on Grand avenue, now occupied by the Ben Miller family. Little Eugene Schaefer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter J. Schaefer, entertained twelve schoolmates at his home on Sunday afternoon, the occasion being his eighth birthday. Games were played, after which refreshments were served and the guest of honor presented with gifts. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 6, 19541 Under sponsorship of the local Kiwanis club, plans are now under way for a new type of entertainment for seniors following the annual prom. Twenty seniors have formed a post prom planning committee, with Art Barbier as chairman. Dan Creamer of the Kiwanis club was^jiamed co-chairman and adviser. All arrangements have been left in the hands of the, students, who have decided on the Country club as the location for the party. The entertainment is available to all seniors who have spent the earlier part of the evening at the prom. Sixty pupils have returned from a memorable trip to Washington, D. C., where they had a tour of ; historic places. The pupils were accompanied by Sisters M. Immaculate, Arnica "The Family Physician," a four-volume home medical encyclopedia has just been released by Dr. Robert G. Addison, consulting orthopedic surgeon at McHenry hospital, who served as senior editor. It was felt that not enough medical advice is available to laymen and this reference work is designed to answer questions and help in recognizing medical problems. It contains complete and up to-date information on all the medical specialities. In addition, there are special sections not usually found in existing eneyclopediasr Sex hygiene, and explanation of the course of female pregnancy; childhood diseases and normal developmental standards; definition of medical terms in layman language; and a "what to do in emergency" section. Dr. Addison, who has a teaching appointment at Northwestern university, is on the staff at Chicago Wesley Memorial hospital and is acting director of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.
