ON PATRIOTISM "Fellow Citizens: "John Adams, John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson find fifty-two other men signed their names to a document which ends thusly: 'And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and bur social honor'. "Chancing loss of fortune, honor and life, these great men signed this document which is entitled "In Congress, July 4, 1776. The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America.' "In keeping with our proud and patriotic heritage, this paper has offered a sj>ecial flag sale and time and again urged citizens to fly their flag on our great holidays. Leafe has been named manager of the LaPorte, fought and died to preserve that which those named above believed in. "But once again, an organization most expected to realize the importance and necessity of continued reverence and patriotism .has chosen to disregard the date of-this, our greatest holiday, and the will of the people in lieu of the gay carnival life. "Once again, the city has left the fireworks display to the American Legion and once again this same organization will celebrate Independence day with the fireworks display on July 5, not July 4, as the original Declaration reads. "Well, there must be some old-fashioned patriotic citizens left and I ask you to join me in demanding the return of the celebration of our Declaration of Independence to its rightful date, that of July 4 and July 4 only. "Christmas has already been exploited so terribly by commercialism that people dread to see it come. This exploitation has all but "buried its true meaning. "Thanksgiving is practically forgotten. Who can remember the dates of VE day or VJ day? "This exploitation of sacred holidays and Holy days must stop! Now is the time to put an end to it. Either that or put an end to American history classes, flags and patriotic political speeches. "The choice is yours, I can't fight it alone. "Donald E. Kinsala "3405 W. Elm, "McHenry, 111."
