r^i jsus THE McHENfi Y pLainDEALEE Thursday, May 14,1364 SO I HEAR... We were glad to see an old friend, George Johnson, this week. He was talking about goifig fishing and also working out on the putting green. We had heard he wasn't so well, but there is a lot of life left in the old boy! See separate story on the Marian Centra! 4-Sport banquet which will be held Sun day evening. Art Jackson is chairman and Fred Meyer the Toastmaster. And McHenry's V.F.W. has contributed some awards. Looks like a lot of McHenry flavoring spread over \_^>"this banquet. We ribbed Jack Thojnas a bit at McHenry's All- Sports banquet, but he came up smiling. After all, Jack is one of our best coaches so the loss of eight baseball games was. not laid in his lap. Jack called to say his team won 3 out of 4 since the banquet and gave us a review which you will find on this page. The banquet was the turning point. Maybe it should have been held earlier. The Warrior baseball team lost a tight one (1-0) to Crystal Lake Tuesday night in district play. There were no errors in the game and no bases pn balls issued. Each team had 4 hits. Victorine and Fletcher formed the battery for Crystal Lake. Jim Meyers (his dad, "Si", played a lot of baseball for Johnsburg) pitched 6 innings and turned the job over to Tim Freund in the seventh. Soda did the catching and had 2 hits in 3 trips. Not many high school games are as well played. Don't forget the ball game here next Sunday. Johnsburg comes to town. We have a story on the Shamrock game last Sunday and have arranged with Manager Mack of ..the. .Tigers to get a box' score each week from now on. Johnsburg beat Dundee 4-0 in the opener as Mack pitched 7 innings, striking out 9 and giving up 3 walks. Ted Freund finished in nice style. . Jack Schaefer had 2 hits. Lloyd Freund, Jim Hermes, Tom Oeffling and Dick Hiller each had one hit. Lloyd drove in 2 runs and Tom blasted a triple. A fast double play in the sixth (Schaefer to Hiller to Freund) pulled Mack out of a jam. Better see the game next Sunday. If a McHenry-Johns- . burg game isn't an attraction, nothing is. The McHenry County varsity track meet will be held at Mc- Cracken Field on Wednesday night, May 20, starting at 6:30. Woodstock is the defending champion. Woodstock dominates the county in track records, but McHenry has a couple of marks to shoot at in this meet George Koch's 19.8 in the 180 low hurdles was set last year. Mike Creighton's G'l1^" high jump record has stood since 1960. Ernie Useman has given a lot of time to the track program at MCHS, acting starter. McHenry Country Club oZ\vot 2wr McHenry Warrior Baseball Review After a string of eight straight losses, the Warrior baseball team has won three of its last four games. On May 5th, Dundee was scuttled by a 7-6 count as the Warriors battled back after being down 5-0 in the second inning. Rich Soda, Soph, catcher, and Wayne Hiller, Junior shortstop, led the Warrior attack with two hits apiece. Jim Meyers, Junior righthander, was the winning pitcher as he went the route. Elgin visited the Warriqr domain on Thursday, May 7th and the Orange and Black pushed across a tally in the last of the eighth inning to capture a 2-1 decision". Jim Meyers had a perfect day at bat for the Warriors as he rapped out three singles in three official trips to the plate. Myron Bentz, Junior, right hander, picked up the win in relief. The Warriors split a twinbill with Barrington last Saturday, losing the operier 3-1 while taking the second game 10-8. The Warriors led 9-4 after three innings, but saw their lead disappear in the 4th to 9-8. Jim Meyers pitched 3% innings of hitless ball in relief to capture his second decision of the year. It was Zion 56, Libertyville 48, and McHenry 44 last Thursday. In the Frosh-Soph meet, Zion had 69 points, McHenry 65, and Libertyville 14. More evidence that McHenry has some good boys coming up. Paul Swanson, a sophomore, cleared 6' in the high jump event. Barrington was too strong in winning their meet, 73-45. See pictures this week of outstanding track men who continue to land in first place in most of the meets. The 7th annual track meel for grade school boys was held Monday night. We will try to get some results set up for next week. "PICKUPS" Even in the stone age when women wrote down their ages, they were chiseling. A toothache is a pain that drives you to extraction. Phil Schmitt pitched eight innings and took the loss. Ron Mauer pitched the ninth. Hitting was the big problem for the Shamrocks as they collected only 4 hits and struck out 17 times. That will improve with a little more batting practice. Schmitt pitched very good ball the first seven innings, allowing only 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out nine. But, in the eighth a hit, a walk and two more singles scored the winning runs for Elgin. Gene Freund drove in the fiist run for McHenry with a solid single to center. The final run was scored as Charlie Pierce and John Knox worked the double steal. Next Sunday Johnsburg will be at McHenry for the Shamrocks first league game. On eight check areas there are more coveys and more birds per covey than last year. The pheasant population in East Central Illinois, the. best range, and on the southern, southeastern and southwestern fringes of the range is heavy. But the population on the northern fringe is still low, although it shows a.little improvement over last year at this time. The population on good range just north of the Illinois River is apparently lower than it was last spring. At least 20 per cent more squirrels were seen on the census areas this spring than last spring. State hook and line records established for four species of fish in 1963.
