Thursday, May 21, 19S4 Johnsburg COMMUNITY CLUB CARNIVAL STARTS FRIDAY JUNE 26 Betty Hettornuuin The carnival season is fast approaching us once again! One of the first of the season will be sponsored by the Johnsburg Community Club. They have chosen the weekend of June 26, 27 and 28 for their annual undertaking. Be sure to keep these three days in mind when you start planning your social calendar. As usual the club has many things on the agenda for this particular weekend. A fish fry will start the long weekend on Friday evening. Keep the dates of June 26, 27 and 28 open for fun. The next regular meeting of the Johnsburg Community Club will be on Monday, June 1. All members are asked to be present at this time. Birthday Surprise When the family of John Smith gathered at his home fop his eighty-ninth birthday celebration-- they really gathered! He only expected his children. The grandchildren surprised him by showing up also. To acc6mmodate the whole gang a cookout was held in the back yard. This was a very pleasant birthday for Uncle John. Contest Winners Our congratulations to Terri Radtke and Linda Cosier, students of St. John's school. These two youngsters won a diocesan spelling contest in Rockford on May 8. Terri, who is in the primary group, took first place, while Linda who was in the intermediate group was awarded second place. All participants received rosariesr8*35^. statue of Mary was given to Terri. I'm sure these girls are as proud of winning as their classmates and teachers are of them reppresenting St. John's school. Large Attendance At Juvenile Meeting When the juvenile girl Foresters met in the community club hall on May 10, seventytwo members were present. These girls take a big interest In their monthly meetings. I think their directors have a lot to do with it. The three ladies, Catherine Dehn, Lou LaBay, and Joan Haag, manage to create enough things for the girls to do so their interests never lag. At the last meeting, May Crowning was held. Judy Stroigl, an eighth grader, had the honor of crowning Mary. Other members of the graduating class also participated. At the next regular meeting which will be held on June 8, a cookout will take place. All members who plan to attend should bring their own hot dogs or hamburgers, buns, silverware, paper plates, and whatever else they will need for the evening. They will also bring ten cents for pop. The outdoor activities will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the community club grounds. Parents are asked to be there at 8:30 to pick up their daughters. Sometime later in June, the directors^wdU-. be taking those girls who have turned in their permission slips on a bus trip to Milwaukee. This outing has been well planned and promises to be most enjoyable for all those members who are eligible to participate. ty sanitarium following a long illness. Our sincere sympathies are extended to his widow, two daughters, and the other surviving members. The Schaefer family was well know in this town. Welcome Visitor* Mr. and Mrs. Van Kennedy of Johnsburg are enjoying a visit from their daughter, husband and grandchildren from Sea Cliff, Long Island, New York. The Sidney Stockton Smiths and their children, Jennifer, Patricia, and Laura, will be spending sometime here visiting with their family. The Kennedys' younger daughter, Arlene Brown, and children, Martin, Stephen and Theresa, of Lake Zurich have also been here visiting during this time. A happy reunion is being enjoyed by the entire group. Track Meet Draws Crowd Last Sunday found many of our young athletes participating in the sports jamboree in McHenry. Girls and boys from both the public school and St. John's were among the winners in the various events. The first place winners will go to Elgin in July to participate in more events. Both of our schools had a very, very good showing. We have good reason to be proud of these young people for their sportsmanship ability. Hats off to Lee Hiller who did a terrific job of announcing and assisting at this track meet. Crowds of interested persons were on hand to witness the meet. Beeent Guests The homes of the Richard Dehn and Jim Hettermann families were visited last Monday by Mr. and Mrs. John Beeskow of Round Lake Park and Mr. and Mrs. Ted Beeskow and daughter, Charmaine, of Chicago. The younger Beeeskows were spending a few days vacation in Round Lake. Association Meeting Coming Up Next Monday, May 25, the last meeting of the season for St. John's Home and School association will be held in the community club h^ll at 8 p.m. The nominating committee will submit their slate of officers for election at this time. "Hobby Night" is also the evenings' agenda. All members attending this meeting are asked to bring either your hobby, your husband's or some member of the family's. If you do not have a hobby, come anyhow! You may just go home with some real good ideas. Try and attend and make this last meeting really the biggest of the year. Games of fun preceded the serving of a delicious lunch. Entertains Family The home of Joe and Alvina Miller was quite busy on Mother's Day. Their family was all home to spend this all important day. Joining in on the festivities were the families of Bob and Jim Miller and Howard Knox. Also home after completing three years in Uncle Sam's service was Dave .Miller. Making the day even more perfect was the surprise visit of Alvina's sister, Mrs. Emma Jung, and Rev. Jung of Shelby, Ohio. Over last weekend the Millers took off for Wolf river with the F. G. Hanfords to catch some fish. From what I hear the biting was real good. And so it's goodbye for another week. See you all right here again next week? Be kind to one another--it doesn't cost a cent.
