WINNING ESSAY I was a slave. My mother and father were sold at an auction a week ago. Both went for high prices because ithey were good and healthy, but each went to a different bidder. They were brokenhearted when this happened. I don't know how Mother willbe able to take it. I heard that Father ran away. They set the do^s after him, chasing him like an animal through the swamps and the woods. He was caught, and taken back to the plantation. There he received a brutal whipping. The white folks seemed satisfied as the blood, mingled with sweat, rolled off his back. But my father didn't even cry out. He was brave. I was a slave. I used to get up at five every morning to fetch the water for Calpurnia, the cook. Whatever Master Richard and his family didn't eat, we did. There was always plenty of chores to do, such as cleaning the stables or hitching up the horses. When the sun was hot and burning, we had to go to the cotton fields. We picked until we filled our baskets or fell. Yesterday Mr. Lincoln told us colored folks that we were free! He called it the Emancipation Proclamation. I am not a slave anymore. I have my own life now, so let me be the one to live it! I am black, I live in Alabama, Mississippi or Illinois. 1 may be a farmer or a doctor. I have a family. When I come home at night, my kids ask me for food. They cry, but I can't give them food. I may be a Christian or a Jew. We have our own church, with a black minister and a black congregation.
