Thursday, May 28, 1964 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Need For Revival Of Democratk Ideals Told Mark Hopkins returned 16 his Alm;i Mator, McHenry high school, this month, 1o spook before members of the social science department and urge a revival of the "Democratic Ideal," Shown with him are Gary Snell and Aleta Kremier. In a talk to several hundred local high school students, Mark • Hopkins, a 1949 graduate of McHenry Community hitfh school, proposed that we need a revival of "Democratic Ideal". He added that Americans have little idea of what Democracy means and that we should have some feeling for it and know what it promises to mankind. Mr. Hopkins returned to speak to the present students of his Alma Mater following an illustrious career in journalism. During the brief span of time since his graduation from high school, he has graduated from Middelbury college in Vermont, served as a language specialist in the Air Force, received his Master's degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin, has been an editor of a weekly newspaper, has been a reporter for the Milwaukee Journal, and has completed the Russian Studies program at the University of Wisconsin. Most recently he spent nine months in the Soviet Union at the University of Leningrad, where he studied the Soviet Press system. Speaking to students from the social sciences department, Mr. Hopkins listed' and explained seven common myths which most Americans think pre true in regard to the Soviet Union misunderstandings which result in our poor foreign policy. Although he listed as the first myth the statement that he speaks as an expert on Russian society, he seemed present situation in the Soviet Union. Mr. Hopkins stated that although only one-half of all the people in Russia are actually Russian and only a small minority of these are Communist, there exists little chance for a revolt against the government; he added that the government is very strictly organized and does not allow opposition parties. He observed that the citizens of the Soviet Union have greater freedom of travel and speech and more certainty of the future under the present administration than ever before. Contrary to the image the Communists of Russia try to project, Mr. Hopkins said that it is quite evident that Russia is still a pleasant nation, not a modern industrial nation. He indicated lhat the many small villages throughout the country have not been touched by the modern technology the Communists are striving for. He emphasized the fact that Russia is a socialistic nation and is not becoming more capitalistic; however, they have adopted several techniques of the United States -incentive pay, assembly- line production, workforce organizations, etc. He added that there are labor unions in Russia but that they are merely organizations to direct workers rather than protect their rights. In his conclusion. Mr. Hopkins pointed out that the only way to combat Communism is to learn more about its oi-gani/ation and ils objectives. He then added that more important than knowing about Communism, is knowing about our own form of government and being able to support it and defend it.
