Oakleaf drive, MeHenry, and other members of Battery A of the 173rd Artillery's 5th battalion, participated in a fire demonstration at Anibach, Germany, May 2. The demonstration, a coordinated tactical firing by the 35th Artillery Group, was held for the Honorable Stephen Ailes, the Secretary of the Army. Specialist Mortimer, a chart operator, entered the Army in June, 1952, and completed basic combat training at Fort Knox. Ky. The 20-year-old soldier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard F. Mortimer, 100 State st., Crystal Lake, 111., attended MeHenry High School. Army Pvt. James D. Houdek, of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent J. HoUdeck, 4710 N. Gregory, MeHenry, was assigned April 23 to the 7th Infantry division in Korea. Houdeck, a pay specialist in the division's 7th Administration company, entered the Army in October, 1963, and completed basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. The 18-year-old soldier is a 1963 graduate of MeHenry high school. Thomas W. Reining, fire control technician third class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Reining of 1907 North Rogers avenue, MeHenry, returned to San Diego, Calif. April 16 aboard the destroyer USS Uhlmann completing a tour of duty with the Seventh Fleet in the Far East. While in the Far East, Uhlmann operated as part of the fast carrier striking force. She also delivered two tons of drugs and medical equipment to Saint J^gpph's Hospital in aosiung, Taiwan. The drugs and equipment were made available b ydrug manugacturers in the United States. Her crew members had an opportunity to visit p^rts in Taiwan, Okinawa, Midway Island and Hong Kong. Essex usually operates out of Quonset Point, R. I. David R. Miller, fireman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thane Miller of 8710 Ramble road, Wonder Lake, is serving aboard the anti-submarine aircraft carrier USS Essex which recently completed refresher training at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Refresher training is conducted periodically to increase the combat readiness of a ship. Exercises, under simulated battle conditions, were conducted in damage control, air defense, anti-submarine warfare and flight operations. Essex normally operates as the hub of an anti-submarine "Hunter-Killer" group composed of surface, sub-surface and air units designed to find and destroy enemy submarines. Marine Private Harold E. Remy, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Remy, Sr., of 4417 East > Wonder Lake road, Wonder Lake, completed four weeks of individual combat training recently at the First Infantry Training regiment, Marine Corps base, Camp Lejeune, N. C. While with the regiment, all new Marines are trained in tactical and combat skills needed for battle. Emphasis was placed on the small unit tactic--the four man fire team and the 14 man squad. 2nd Lt. Charles K. Meyers, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence C. Meyers, Route 2, MeHenry, and other members of Battery B of the 517th Artillery's 3rd Missile battalion completed a one-week practice missile firing at McGregor Guided Missile range, N. M,, May 8. Lieutenant Meyers' unit, armed with the Nike-Hercules missile, is responsible for air defense in the Detroit area and is part of the nationwide Army Air Defense command. Be entered the Army last October and is a platoon leader in the battery, regularly stationed at Detroit. SEVENTH U. S. ARMY, GERMANY Paul P. Karls, 18 son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul P. Karls, 3709 W. Grand avenue, MeHenry, was promoted to private first class May 15 while assigned to the 8th Ordinance battalion in Germany. An automotive repairman in the battalion's 88th Ordnance company near Hanau, Karls entered the Army in September, 1963, and received basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. He was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., before arriving overseas in March of this year. Karls is a 1963 graduate of Marian Central high school, Woodstock. Marine Private Wayne M. Klein, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Klein of 317 North Hill road, MeHenry, completed four weeks of individual combat training May 1 at the Second Infantry Training regiment, Marine Corps base,. Camp Pendleton, Calif. Marine Private Albert F. Cajthaml, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert A. Cajthaml of 1511 West Sunnyside Beach drive., MeHenry, completed recruit training May 14 at the Marine Corps Recruit depot, Parris Island, S. C. John A. Yegge, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Yegge, returned home Tuesday after completing three years service in the Navy Air Force. For two years he has been stationed at the Naval air base in Argentia, Newfoundland. Following his separation from active duty in the Navy at Philadelphia, Pa., he flew to O'Hare field where he was met by his wife, the former Joyce Motulewicz of Wonder Lake. Main Street Phone 385-7500 HERE AND THERE IN BUSINESS Richard G. Nowak, formerly of MeHenry and Waukegan, has been appointed supervisor of the Abbott Laboratories' Los Angeles branch. Nowak, who has begun his duties in Los Angeles, has been with the pharmaceutical company since 1961, employed in the sales research and branch operations department of the RICHARD NOWAK company's North Chicago headquarters. He holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration and economics from the University of Illinois and served two years in the Marine corps. He will establish permanent residence in Los Angeles in the near future. BOND DRIVE KICK OFF The Illinois Bell Telephone company's 1964 payroll Saving Bond drive kicked off Friday, May 8, in a meeting at Woodstock. Jas. Michie, U. S. Treasury dept., Savings Bond division for Illinois, was the principal speaker. Stan Jozwiak, commercial manager and general chairman for the Savings Bond drive here, said, "Our goal is 100 per cent participation on the parjt of our employees here." The drive ends May 22. Illinois Bell President John D. deButts has accepted an appointment as national chairman of the 1964 Payroll Savings Bond drive within the telecommunications industry. A company- wide goal of 100 per cent has been set. NEW MANAGER Julius Groffo has taken over management of the Chapel Hill Country club. Al. Favelli, golf pro, will be a partner in the operation of the club, which is now open for business. Dr. and Mrs. Milton L. Smith, former owners, have again resumed ownership of the club. INSURANCE MEETING On Wednesday, May 13, Mary Buckie, office manager, Mildred Leisten and Virgil R. Pollock, president, all of the Pollock Insurance Agency, attended the tenth annual regional education meeting sponsored by the Illinois Association of Insurance agents. This meeting was held at the Elgin Country club, Elgin, and was attended by approximately 150 agents from the northern part of the state. Seven topics were covered by various speakers pertaining to changes in the insurance field and to business trends in general. REPRESENT FIRM The Amway Sales corporation has announced the appointment of Arthur R. and Carol A. Hafer of 4321 W. Shore drive, MeHenry, as distributors of Amway products. Mr. and Mrs. Hafer, Jr., will distribute the complete line of Amway home-care merchandise. The "BALLAD OF DAVY CROCKETT" sold over 7 million copies in 6 months, which is about a record for any record. V.F. W. News By Renee Jende The women's auxiliary to Fox River Post 4600 met at 8 p.m. on Monday, May 11. The convention banquet honoring Department President Imogene Eaton and Department Commander John Heidemann will be held on June 27 in Springfield. The convention will be June 26, 2T and 28 in Springfield. The Downey party for this month was scheduled May 20, at Downey hospital. Kathy "Wuhler tells me that one of the most faithful helpers throughout the year was Mike Surovitz. It would certainly be appreciated if more men from the post could attend. Our treasurer, Marge Moreth, has been hospitalized.' We hope that by now she is home and feeling chipper again. There was an election of delegates for the department convention. Those elected\were Marge Moreth, Jean Wiles, Daisy Smith, Dora Krocker and Josephine Hansen. The alternates were Ethel Groth, Florence Svoboda, Augusta Morrison, Kathy Fuhler and Viola Schuble. A photo-copyer is being purchased as the auxiliary's gift to the post for their installation gift. Mathis, Jr., of Chicago, to be the speaker for their annual meeting, it was announced by Joe Baisch, chairman of the annual meeting committee. Mr. Mathis is the Scout commissioner for the Chicago Area council and has been a member of its executive board since 1950. lie is an Eagle Scout and attended the national and international Jamborees in 1937. His record of performance is such that the National Council granted him the Silver Beaver award. The meeting will be'held at Forest Hills Country club on Thursday, May 28, with dinner starting at 6:45 p.m. The nominating committee, headed by Leroy Esten, will present a slate of officers for the coming year. Members'of the executive board, members-at-large of the council, and/the National council representatives will be elected, in addition to the officers. The Silver Beaver committee has selected nominees for the Silver Beaver award. These names have been presented to the National council for their consideration and thdse who are qualified and granted the award will receive it on the evening of the annual meeting. Names of these recipients are not announced in advance. The award is given for distinguished service to boyhood by a registered scouter. The fiscal year of the council each of the operating commitliegins June 1, and reports by tees will be presented for the past year's work. CHURCH THEME "There is no power but to God." Carroll, Woodstock, is a candidate for the Appellate Court in the new Second district. His name will be submitted to the Republican convention on July 20. This convention will be composed of delegates chosen by the Central committees of the thirteen counties in the district. He has been a circuit judge for nineteen years, serving in MeHenry, Lake, Boone and Winnebago 'counties. In addition to his circuit court duties he has for the past eleven years by appointment of the Supreme court served on the Appellate " 4 - i• court. Prior to Ma election to the circuit bench he served ai state representative and also * w a s s t a t e ' s a t t o r n e y o f M c H e n * V - ry county. IN LANGUAGE INSTITUTE Forty-seven teachers from. throughout the United States have been accepted as participants in the first Sacramento State college Spanish Language institute to be held June 22 to Aug. 7. Dr. Joe T. Mc- Cullough, chairman of the Foreign Language department and director of the Institute, announced.
