Tlsussdsy, May 28, 1964 THE McHENHY PLAINDEALER Honor Marian Athletes mppr^ipi Don Peasley Photo The above picture was taken at the Marian Central Catholic high school sports banquet last Sunday night as the McHenry V.F.W. presented awards to outstanding athletes. Pictured left to right are Pete Parker, most outstanding defensive basketball playqr; Paul Nitz, most outstanding athlete with the highest scholastic average; James Doran, commander of the McHenry V.F.W.; and Ron Reckamp, who received the sportsmanship award. Three juniors and one senior ,were named "Most Valuable" award winners at Marian Central's spring sports banquet Sunday, and that indicates good news for the Hurricanes' coaching staffs this fall and for next season. Marian has a wealth of returning talent in almost every sport, a study of the letter winners reveals, and coaches were optimistic as they reviewed recent campaigns and looked forward to Marian's first year as a member of a conference. Thomas Parsley, Marian Central's athletic director and an entertaining speaker, reminded the audience at the Marian Fathers Club's banquet that the Hurricanes begin competition in the Catholic Suburban league this fall. "That's a tough league -- but I think Marian will do a representative job in the loop," he said confidently. Nitz Wins Two Awards Paul Nitz, Marian's fast-developing cage star, won two awards, both coveted honors. He earned the Woodstock VFW trophy as the "Most Valuable" eager. Then he received the McHenry VFW plaque as the most outstanding athlete with the highest scholastic average Nitz is a junior. Gary Beiers, all-around trackster, is a junior and he won the "Most Valuable" track award. Jack Adams, whose hurling helped nail down two district victories for the Hurricanes last week, was named the "Most Valuable" in baseball. Adams is a junior. Joe Malpede, No. 1 golfer this year from McHenry, is a senior. He captured the "Most Valuable" golfer award. In addition, the Fathers Club gave these added awards: Most improved cage player--tie between Tim Murphy and Ken Frost; and best free throw average-- Clarence Adams, 79 per cent. McHenry VFW Awards The McHenry VFW began its awards recognition at this banquet. Besides the award to Nitz for scholastic achievement, it presented a plaque to Pete Parker, most outstanding defensive cage player, and to Ron Reckamp, best sportsmanship. The annual banquet honors athletes in the four sports and the cheerleaders.
