That's an old refrain that -the Shamrocks would like to Hhave you girls sing to your hus- •*t>ands or boy friends. ~ It is Tuesday night and Manager Chuck Pierce just left us after an interesting visit. Chuck knows he has a job on his hands, but certainly has the enthusiasm to lead the "Micks" back if anybody can. While Little League and Pony League have stolen the show, we fans should not let- ; down the older boys in American Legion ball and County League. Those fellows have reached an age where it is all important for them to take part in all good forms of recreation. The Shamrocks put on their hitting togs last Sunday and bombarded Dundee 18 to 6. That game seems to have given the team a big lift. We got out of McHenry County twice in the last week. Yes, we did! On Thursday we went to the big City of Chicago. Our better half pulled that old one on us--"I'll go with you if you want me to." Now, how do you answer that one? We went about our business and met her when we thought the stores were about to close. There was more looking than shopping since we believe in the slogan "Try McHenry First." But, there was an item cm the ninth floor that we had to see. Right here and now we want to advise our fellow-men to take those gals on an elevator rather than an escalator when you are going to the ninth floor. • * Stopping at every floor .gleans so much looking that you forgot what you were looking for by the time you hit the ninth floor. DARNELL WINS TWO IN ROW AT WILMOT STOCK CAR RACES Like Indianapolis winner, A. J. Foyt, who won his second 500 mile race. Bay Darnell of Deerfield, Illinois, won his second race in a row as he took a wire to wire win at Wilmot in the modified stock car races. Darnell averaged 51.76 mph. for the twenty laps. His car was powered by a Chevie engine. The 15 lap semi saw Russ Sorensen of Racine in another wire to wire win but he had tough competition from Dennis Burgen and Terry Vaughn. Ten lap heat race winners were Claude Potter of Twin Lakes, Darnell, Bill Shoulders and Lee Weskaski. More than 40 cars took aim at each other in the two spectator heats. Dick Aissen of McHenry, Illinois started in the back and staged a spectacular charge for the front and had it been an 11 lap race instead of just ten, he might have caught and passed Harold Gutche and Blackie DeGroot for the win. Will Winnchester of Burlington was the winner in the other heat and Wild Bill Owens won the feature. Bay Darnell is now modified point leader and Jack Ester is spectator car point leader. A nine race program is again scheduled for next Saturday night and with the track conditions showing si^ns of packing, new track 'records will be possible. by A1 Olson The last week of weekend^ only, little league baseball is over. The final scores through Sunday are. (No miniature games this week.) Minor league: Cards, 6; Falcons, 5; Bluebirds, 7; Orioles, 6; Owls, 6; Eagles. 0; Major league: Cards, 3; Falcons 0; Bluebirds, 12; Orioles, 3; Owls, 5; Eagles 4. Starting next Friday evening there will be baseball in the V.F.W. Little League Park every day of the week until the middle of July. This year, Wednesday evening as well as Saturday afternoons, have been set aside for the miniature leaguers to use the Little League Park. This allows these youngsters to play more games on a regular field. It never ceases to amaze the writer to see some of the spectacular playing of these boys. You must remember, the age range in the minors and the majors, is from 9 to 12, yet they catch those balls against the fences, spear those line drives, grab those hot grounders and hit the ball over the fence for home runs. Don Reinboldt hit his second homerun Sunday. He wears an Eagle uniform. You folks who come out to see the games know what I mean; those of you who haven't seen one would really be surprised. Come out and support your son's team. It's great! The Johnsburg Tigers got only 4 hits but made the most of them in defeating Richmond 5-3 at Johnsburg on Memorial Day. It was the Tigers fourth straight win of the 1964 season. With the Tigers leading 3 to 1 in the sixth inning, Chris Bennett came through with a tworun home run which eventually was the deciding factor. Ted Freund went all the way to win his third straight game. Ted pitched real steady ball and walked only one while striking out eight. Johnsburg (5) AB J. Schaefer ss J. Hiller 2b J. Hermes 3b T. Every married man knows all about the Powers of Positive Thinking The Shamrocks came up with their first win Sunday by defeating Dundee 18 to 6 at McHenry. Every one on the Shamrocks got into the game except Denny Justen, who has an injury, and Chuck Pierce, who would have liked to have swung a bat, but had enough to do with waving the runners around third base to score. Ron Kramer had 3 for 5, all extra base hits, 2 doubles and his second home run in 2 days, which came in the first inning with one on base. Wright had 2 doubles and pinch-hitter .Sund hit a triple for Dundee. There were a lot of hits and a Jot of running in this ball game. This win might be the one McHenry needed to have a. successful season. They are idle this weekend, but a schedule of their next home game will be published. AIR FILTERS AND GAS MILEAGE A few drivers will be spending some wise money on needed engine tune-ups this Spring and then throwing away most of the benefits by balking at the few dollars for the cost of a clean carburetor aitf filter. Manufacturers' studies show 18 pounds of air to 1 pound of gasoline is required at Summer temperature if the carburetor mixture is to get the most energy possible out of the fuel. This is approximately1 2,000 cubic feet (enough to fill a room 20'xl0'xl0')$for every gallon of gas in a 6 cylinder engine at 60 MPH. When your air filter becomes clogged from road grime, it means simply that your carburetor is not getting the required air it was designed to get. The result is that the gasoline-air mixtures becomes unnecessarily rich in fuel. This in turn reduces power and economy. Recent engineering tests on two V-8 engines in a 1961 Mercury and a 1959 Plymouth with clean and clogged air filters showed ;i miles-per-gallon gain ol 3.6 MIJG for the Mercury and 2.4 Ml'G for the Plymouth with a clean filter over a clogged one. Recommended changes for air filters vary from model to model usually every ten to twenty thousand miles -- but Fhese figures can be altered drastically if you drive frequently over dusty roads. If you have your car serviced regularly at our shop, your air cleaner will be inspected as a matter of course. If it needs changing, we will recommend it to you. BISS roitn HALES 8D:W» W. Main
