June 4-11, 1964) LONG WAITING LIST FOR MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES On Jan.6ll, 1960, the Mental Health Center for McHenry County began seeing patients who were referred to the clinic by various referral sources in the community such as courts, physicians, schools, ministers, members of the family and indivdiuals on a self-referral basis. Since that time the -Mental Health center has seen more than 850 patients and the requests for services by residents of this community has been increasing each month". The accepted standard for clinical functioning is one fulltime professional clinical team consisting of a full-time psychiatrist, psycologist and psychiatric social worker for each 50,- 000 population. The Mental Health Center for McHenry County has the equivalent staff of less than three members to serve a population in excess of 85,000. Further, in order to provide appropriate psychiatric care to patients, it is necessary to individualize each patient and be thorough in evaluations. Unfortunately, this results in long waiting lists defeating the concepts of prevention or early diagnosis and treatment. According to the National Association of Mental Health one out of every four persons is in need of psychiatric treatment. Further, approximately 75 per cent of the patients who are seen by the family physician have physical ailments which have been primarily caused by long term chronic emotional problems. The rapid expansion of requests for mental health services in the community has, unfortunately, been matched by increasing personnel shortages. As a result, a long waiting list has accumulated and it has now become necessary to turn down fill requests for now services, except those emergencies as evaluated by the psychiatric director, until further notice. PRESENT MUSICAL Many gifted singers and actors from Crystal Lake, yox River Grove, Cary, Dundee and other surrounding areas will be seen when the c u r t a i n r i s e s on the musical play ."Take Along", at the Lake theater, Crystal Lake, June 12-13.
