Page Sixteen THE McHENRY PLAINDETALER Thursday^ Juna 25, 1964 MCCULLOM LAKE NEWS fevE LEVESQUE 385-3191 NEW SCRIBE TO WRITE COLUMN DURING JULY A real treat is in store for you beginning next week when Mrs. Carol Bateman of West East Lane will take over the column. No novice to journalism. she served as editor of the St. Benedict high school .paper for two years, and was -very enthused with the job. . Carol has four youngsters to take care of, so your cooperation will be greatly appreciated. Will" you be kind enough to call her by Sunday evening, so that she will have ample time in which to prepare her copy? Deadline is Monday -morning! This reporter has been on the job since December of 1952, with very few lapses. That must make me the oldest (in all ways) scribe on the Plaindealer staff! . A lot of history has been made locally and * there will be plenty more. Wfc feel that everyone will benefit for the respite and I surely hope you will be as cooperative with Mrs. Bateman as you have been with me. The telephone number of "your new columnist is 385-5183. Pick up the phone now and start her off with a bang! State Fair Romance Though the two young people involved live only about 11 . miles apart, each had to journey to the state capitol of Springfield to meet. Don Osterby was working at the state fair last August when he met the lovely Miss Barbara Ann Arsenau of Richmond. Their friendship ripened and on May 24, Don presented his heart's desire with a diamond solitaire. The engagement took place on the night of her commencement from Richmond-Burton high school. Young Osterby graduated from McHenry high school on June 4. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Francis Arsenau of Richmond, while Don's mom and dad are Elsie and Ray Osterby of 5207 W. Orchard Drive. They have no immediate plans to wed. Our very best wishes to the young couple and to the proud parents who have bestowed their blessings. news. Hi! to both of you. Hospital Patients--In and Out Shorty Sheriff, who was taken to McHenry hospital a week ago Saturday for emergency surgery seems to be making good progress. We tried to contact him Monday morning, but he was sitting up in the 6iiair and unable to reach the phone. Don't forget to continue those cheery msesages. He is in Room 6 and would love to hear from you. Ray Aalto entered Harvard hospital a week ago Tuesday and was released last Sunday morning. During his stay, he was poked and photographed. Ray says he has no secrets from the medicos--either inside or out! He did undergo a spinal tap and just about every, test in the book and is on medication during his two weeks recovery period. Happy we are to relate that he is feeling much better, and according to Ginny, it shows. He's too nice a guy to be down and we'd rather see him up! Keep It Rolling, Kids Our local teens have a fine organization with plenty of new ideas forthcoming from adult sponsor, Rich Johnson, but membership is lagging. Not enough fellas and gals are turning out for the meetings held every Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the beachhouse. Every summer the young people have sponsored Saturday night dances under the star's, but this year there are not enough members to "man the stations". We are hoping that enthusiasm Will revive and we will hear the music from the beach again! Advance Notice The regularly scheduled meeting of thai Cullom-Knoll association will be held Sunday, July 5, at 3 p.m. There is much to discuss about the forthcoming summer festival slated for July 25. Bill Walter is general chairman, but he can't run the affair alone! Reserve July 5 on your date calendar and plan to attend. The new people who have' recently made the village home are most cordially invited. The Cullom-Knoll is solely responsible for the upkeep of the beach and park and it can't be done on ."peanuts". Only six dollars per annum from each family is requested. 'Nuther reminder next week from your new scribe. Combining; Business With Pleasure Ed Koch deserves accolades as an enterprising young teenager. Strictly on his own, but with "permish" from mom, Diana, and pop, Chase, he applied for a position at a resort in Fish Creek, Wis. Much to his delight, he was accepted and has been on the job for over a week. His first correspondence has arrived and he is having the time of his life. Apparently- -he- is - a--general handyman but has plenty of free time to pursue his own interests. We know he is a mighty handsome lad, but we suspect him of some youthful boasting when he says the "dolls" are pouncjing on his panel! Needless to say, we know he will make the most of his opportunities and gain valuable experience. We mean on the job, and not with co-education! Return From Florida Thanks to modern science, Janet Hansen enjoyed her flight home from Florida much more than the journey down. It seems the poor lass suffers travel illness which marred a portion of her - vacation. She and her two brothers, Mark and Guy, were accompanied by grandparents, Marie and Tom Christiansen, for a delightful two weeks. The five flew to Hialeah and then made trips to Miami, Pompano Beach and Key West. The side trips were made by bus. They visited. Birch State Park and Crandon Park Beach. Both places have swimming areas, but the latter one also had a zoo. In Miami, a trip was planned by glass bottom boat, but Janet became ill and gave up the voyage. One of the days, Mrs. Elected To Legion Posts Two very capable and dedicated members of the American Legion auxiliary were elected to office at the meeting held Monday, June 15, in the I&gion home. Alee (Bobbie) Carroll holds the position of first vicepresident, while Miss Sandy Lock was elected second vicepresident. Bobbie served faithfully for quite some time as rehabilitation chairman for the veterans of Downey hospital and brought hours of entertainment in the way of books, magazines and playing cards. We know the auxiliary will continue to progress with these two gals. Greetings To New Subscribers ' This should be a great surprise to Irma and Art Maina of Chicago, but we feel they deserve a special greeting. The two were in the village last summer when Mrs. Maina served as judge of the Miss McCullom Lake contest. They were both impressed with our community, the appearance of the beach and park, and our lovely memorial site. As a result, they requested a subscription to the Plaindealer and have become devotees of the local 11 Reason' To See Us If You Need A Water System or Wei 1. Miss Hansen remained on the shore! How's this for a dirty trick. No catch was recovered by any of the boats that went out that day. The first time -in three years, according to local squires. In addition to travel sickness. Janet also suffered two bad cases of sunburn! She came home with the second batch of blisters! Because of the lower prices, the three youngsters came home with new wardrobes which will see them through the summer. For the return trip by air. Janet took drammamine tablets and suffered no ill effects. Guess what the Hansens now stock in th^ir medicine cabinet! Hoa9ewarmin£ For Couple Sally and The^or Olsen drove to the city last weekend to - attend - the combination birthday party and housewarming for Sally's granddaughter and new husband -- Mr. and Mrs. Bud Cavender. Susan planned the event as a surprise for her groom and it was mighty successful. He had been feeling very gloomy when no one came to call for the two special occasions, but his spirits soared when the guests yelled the happy word! Beach Frolic Ten young people from the city and about twenty-five local guys 'n' gals assembled on the beach Saturday night for a party honoring Mario Peterson's sixteenth birthday. For the occasion, mother, Marge, provided enough hot dogs, pop, chips and other goodies to feed an army. A few of the hardier kids ventured in for swimming, but most remained on the shore around the bonfire. Festivities terminated about 10:30 p.m. after a delightful evening. Milestones Dorothy and John Cunningham chose hier parents' anniversary for their own. The young ones will be wed nine years today, June 25, while Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kroncke will observe thirty-seven. Wherever we travel we see Christian churches in harmonious set* tings, and there's a tendency to think of them as "part of the scenery.** But what an important part they are! Every one is a House of God, dedicated to His service. Every one is a community focal point, helping in a thousand ways to broaden and beautify the lives of its members. And every one is a vital link in the shining chain of Christian belief that stretches around the world. Not i&e from where you live, there's a church that could give yo© Kfe a Hew dimension.
