Mr. Wells, since he -graduated from McHenry high school, has had four years at Lombard college, Galesburg, 111., and last season was a member of the McHenry Community high school faculty. A number of the summer home owners along the east shore of Fox river, south of this city, including Emerald Park, are now enjoying the conveniences afforded by electricity. Rattlesnakes in these "parts have been very rare of late., Mrs. James' Bi £erry; for matiy years one of McHtenry's most highly esteemed fitizens, passed away at the family home on Maple avenue in this city Tuesday noon following an illness of four months. The lumber for the seats and benches for the McHenry park is now on the grounds and will be erected very shortly. The William Smith family are adding a second story to their home on Pearl street. The work of raising the roof was started the first of this week. McHenry Post, American Legion, is able to Teport that the net proceeds of the three-day carnival, as held here July 4, 5 and 6, will reach very close to 53,000, which is indeed a most gratifying result The net proceeds in due time will be turned Into a fund to be created for the purchase of a. fire truck mid equipment for the city of McHenty. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 13, 1939) Mr. and Mrs. James G. Fay returned on July 2 from a visit with Mr. Fay's parents, Mr. and , Mrs. J. W. Fay, in Bellingham, Wash. Charles J. Karls of Johnsburg received fatal injuries when struck by an automobile early Monday morning on Rt. 31, two miles north of this city. The accident occurred about 7:30 and death took place the next morning at 2 o'clock at the Woodstock hospital. Winners in a nation-wide Percheron draft horse "beauty contest" are Enchanter and Mar Dona owned by Pine Tree farms, McHenry. Enchanter is declared the most perfect Percheron stallion in America by livestock judges. Mir Dona is named one of the beat ten Percheron mares. The popular Russell Brothers eleven-piece all-girl orchestra, which proved such a decided hit at the Bridge ballroom several weeks ago, will be back to repeat its success Saturday evening. Kenneth M. Gonseth of Pistakee Bay is among the seventy- eight recent graduates from colleges in Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin who have been selected to train with the regular Army reserve second lieutenants for one year beginning this month. Fire destroyed a barn on the George Oeffling farm near Johnsburg, which is tenanted by the Ben Stilling family. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 15, 1954) A speedboat exploded just north of the McHenry dam on Sunday afternoon, causing five persons to be burned, four of them seriously. It was believed that fumes beneath the closed hatch may have been ignited by a spark since the boat had been filled with gasoline shortly before the accident occurred. New owner of the West Side Locker is Edward Frett of Johnsburg, Who will be assisted in his new business by his father, Peter Frett, of Kenosha. Gerald Wegner returned last week to Army duty a{ Woodbrige, Va. Mrs. Charlotte A. Nehrke, 69, a permanent resident since 1945, died last Sunday, July 11. Death followed surgery which she underwent the day previous. Mr. and Mrs. William Guffey of Richmond are the parents Of a son, born at the Woodstock hospital July 13. In a ceremony performed in the chapel at Fairchild Air Force base, Spokane, Wash., Saturday, July 10, Miss Betty Aronson became the bride of Airman First Class Thomas R. Kent. A reception followed at the Airmen's club. The Donald Weingart family Is now at home in their new home in Cooney Heights. They moved earlier this month from the Justen apartm.ent on Green street. Willis Schreiner. is a winner in the fourth appearance and cleanliness contest conducted by the Standard Oil company in this division. Judy Freund was crowned Marine Day queen at judging ceremonies held last Monday evening in the high school gymnasium. Members of her court include Jackie Moss, Barbara Zender and Lois Claybaugh. The post of coroner held by the late Harry L. Ehorn of Richmond for twelve years prior to his death in June will be filled by his son, Theron, who will serve the unexpired term which extends to the 1956 election. Ehorn served under his father ?or ten years and during that time officiated at numerous inquests throughout the county. UNIT 491 It has been officially announced by 11th District S.A.L. Chairman and Detachment Advisor H. J. Saynor, Sr., that the newly formed and activated 11th district detachment of the Sons of the American Legion has received its detachment colors from national headquarters, and that the colors will be on review for the very first time, in the Fiesta Day parade which will be held on July 19 in McHenry. Squadron 412 of Woodstock has been selected by H. J. Saynor, Sr., to furnish the color guard for the 11th district detachment, and they will have the honor of being the first to display the detachment colors. The colors guard members are Paul Rahn, Jack Crossman, John Moan, and Brett Coleman, all of squadron 412, the fifth member of the guard is also a member of squadron 412, and his identity will not be made known until the time of the parade. It is the hope of squadron 412 that next year at this time they will be able to exhibit a crack drill team for the public's enjoyment. The membership of the 11th district S.A.L. detachment requested that the colors be displayed on parade for the first time, at McHenry. Due to the fact that it was through the efforts of H. J. Saynor. Sr., that the detachment was formed. by Mary Einspar Mrs. Betty Lingenfelter, president of the McHenry Unit 491 of the American Legion auxiliary, will attend the annual state convention of the American Legion auxiliary, Department of Illinois, to be held July 30th, 31st, and August 1st at the Morrison hotel in Chicago. Other delegates accompanying her are: Lydia Fenner, Alee Carroll, Marie Howe, Pearl Cooper, and Rita Simpson. Alternates elected to attend the convention are: Mary Einspar, Lauretta Homo, Sue Wirfs, Dorothy Diedrich, Pearl Pietsch and Delia Freund. County President elect Ruth Mrachek will attend the convention as a guest of McHenry Unit 491. Past State Presidents will be honored at the Past Pesidents' Parley/ Dinner on Thursday evening, July 30, when Past Unit Presidents with their current Unit Presidents will gather to highlight the presentation of six nurses' scholarships of $375 each to high school graduates who have qualified in the scholarship competition and have been accepted for nurses' training. The Veterans' Craft Exchange, 30 West Washington Street in Chicago, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Illinois the only one of its kind in the nation, will be the recipient of a substantial donation to help defray the cost of its maintenance, which is underwritten entirely by the American Legion Auxiliary, on a non-profit basis. Statewide donations from the Past Presidents' groups and local Units make this project possible. Other convention social events include the honoring of Gold Star members at a luncheon on Friday, July 31. Also on Friday afternoon, the election of state officers for 1964-65 will be held along with the delegates to the National Convention to be held in Dallas, Texas, Sept. 21-24. Another feature of the convention is the rehabilitation-service forum to be held in the Terrace Casino of the Morrison on July 31, when hospital volunteers from both The Ameridan Legion and the American Legion auxiliary and "Volunteens" representing the junior members of the auxiliary will be honored. There will also be a capping ceremony for new"* volunteers. The annual unit dinner honoring all delegates will cUmax the convention festivities when Mrs. Luther D. Johnson of Valley, Neb., national president of the American Legion auxiliary will be guest of honor. All convention sessions will be presided over by Mrs. H9mer Roman, of Macomb, state presidents McHenry Unit 491 will hold its Reba Owens. She will have the following members on her committee: Dorothy Cook, Vera Purvey, June Diedrich, Lois Worts, Arliss Alms, Mary Siscoe, Veronica Werner, Charlotte Mullen* Mary Ann Neuman, Irene Guffey, Eva Peisha, Mary Miller, Dorothy Hollander, Beatrice Petersen, Margaret Stilling and Grace Blake. PLAYERS PRESENT MUSICAL COMEDY "BYE BYE BIRDIE" Once again the Woodstock Fine Arts Association welcomes the Summerset Players of Winnetka to the Opera House. Two summers ago this same group of talented young actors and musicians brought their production of "Pajama Game" to the Opera House stage and played to full houses on two consecutive evenings. This summer, on Friday, July 31 and Saturday, August 1 at 8:30 in the evening, they will present the smash musical comedy "Bye Bye Birdie". This is a special premiere benefit performance. Each year the Summerset Players donate the proceeds from their summer productions to charity. Their appearance in Woodstock is sponsired by the Fine Arts Association and one-half the proceeds will be used to expand the scope of this groups' scholarship program in Creative Arts. The association will again award this money to deserving high school students in the county who excel in art, music, drama or creative writing. F. W. AUXILIARY NEWS by Bill Abbink Fox River Post 4600 held their monthly meeting on Monday, July 6, at the clubhouse. Plans are in progress for the annual steak fry to be held on August 18, on the club grounds. Further details will be given at a later date. The foundation for the tank has been laid and the post is waiting to hear from the government for the date of shipping. A V.F.W. float is under construction for the Fiesta Day parade. The float is,progressing nicely and we are sure the post will be very proud of the work the kids have done. The Men of Brass, Senior Dfum and Bugle Corps sponsored by Post 4600, marched in the Fourth of July parade in Mt. Prospect. They had two exhibitions on the Fourth, one following the parade and one in the evening at Sportsmen's Park. Then on July 10, they were at Milwaukee's Marquette Stadium. On July 19, Fiesta Day, they will exhibit at McCracken Field in McHenry. During the day they will march in the parade. The first annual Fiesta-Fling, sponsored by the Men of Brass, will be on Saturday, July 18, at the post clubhouse. This dance is open to the public, so let's all attend and help support McHenry's Senior Drum and Bugle Corps.
