Eighteen THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday* July 16# 1964 NNYSIDE ESTATES FRAN OLSEN 385-5740 Subdivision Enjoys Picnic Picnicking cn the Fourth of July i.; unlike picnicking on any other day. The signifcance of the day puts a special sparkle in the air, and when it meets with ihfc sunshine and warmth of an ideai summer day, the setting is unbeatable. A local shady grove (well peopled! and an interesting agenda (well planned) reveals the formula for tho successful Independance Day picnic sponsored by the entertainment committee of our subdivision. The children were thrilled by the pony rides and had many laughs participating in the sack races, balloon blowing contest, egg toss, volley ball and other games.. In the atmosphere of fine music flowing through a p.a. system, the adults were enter-* tained wth a penny pitch, turtle trot, and the antics of the children. A heap of chickens twenty-six to be exact) were pressure friend on location and snapped up by the hungry picnickers who also did justice to the bakery booth and refreshment stand. Some of the non-resident guests who attended were Dottie Siepman's mother, and Shirley Simmons' visitors from Milwaukee: her mother, sister and family, and the Kissengers. For the laborious hours spent to make this affair such fun, many thanks to Mel Simmons for the signs, to the girls who helped with the pony rides, and to Howard Hoettels, Ted Bierchen, Wally Roy, Velma Stephens Shirley Simmons, and Harold and Marge Palmer for their work before and at the picnic. cently receiving the nomination for state representative. Better Late Than Never To avoid any heart failures when road work does not com mence in August, please note that September is now the projected time for beginning road paving. Console yourself with the above title of this message. Cooney Campers Mary Jane Lakowske and Mary Joan Walczynski were among the Girl Scouts who at tended day camp in Cooney Heights June 25) through July 3 Excepting for the unfavorable weather conditions, either too wet or too hot, it was good fun and diversion. For Joan Walczynski, who was a unit leader, there was a fringe benefit: one lovely tan. Alice Bieschke was leader for a Cadette primitive unit, who took to the woods to pitch ^heir own tents, dig their latrines, cook their own meals, and sleep out two of the four nights. , Now that is all history, the weather is pleasant and mild. Ah, well, such it i,s that makes staunch campers or no campers. Congratulations to Tom Hanahan for re- Crunch! Accordian pleats may be fashionable in clothes, but in cars they pose an ironing-out problem among other problems. Just ask Joan Walczynski. She knows. She nearly got pleated into her accordian pleated car when it was involved in a chain reaction accident in front of St. Mary's church in McHenry recently. California Came to Kelly . . . i n a l l i t s s u n n y s p l e n d o r in the personage of Kelly's mother, LaRance Noah, his sister, Kathryn Haggard, and brother, Cleland and Joan and their three children. So from June 19 through the twenty-seventh the Santa Rosans and the Sunnysiders "had a ball." Visiting, picnicking, and touring packed the week, which held its share of excitement: During their tour of the Museum of Science and Industry, David disappeared. After a frantic search he was found in the seat of the tractor at the farm display playing with the controls. After the mixed emotions simmered down, LaVerne asked her son, "What would you have done if that machine started going." Calmly he replied, "Oh, I saw the gas gauge was on 'E\ so I knew it couldn't go anywhere.' Leaving the entire wash out on the line one beautiful sunny morning, the entire family headed for their second picnic in Woodstock. A cloud burst ended that picnic and left a sad scene at home: wet wash and wet house. As a fitting climax to this family reunion, they all formed a caravan on the 25th, complete- with the 15 foot trailer that Cleland pulled all the way from Santa Rosa, and headed for Galina, 111., the birthplace of Kelly and his family. There they visited the historic sights and continued their merriment. Says LaVerne, "We did more in I hat one week than we've done since we've been here." Marvelous memories. 9 Omaha Revivsited The 68 degree weather on the 6th welcomed home this reporter (and entourage) better than a fanfare or a ticker tape parade could nave done. The extremely muggy Omaha heat was interrupted only by severe wind, rain, and hail storms and all too frequent tornado warnings. Discounting the weather, it was a marvelous vacation and an excellent rest. No, he doesn't want to be a jet pilot, nor a nuclear physicist, nor a lawyer, nor an actor, nor a doctor, nor yet a banker, baker, or chemist. John has decided. He wants to be a MINISTER. I wondered if his father or his uncle or anyone else in the family is a minister? Strangely enough, no! He won't make a lot of money, and knowing John, he certainly won't particularly like the idea of getting up to "preach" to people. Definitely he won't have a big shiny car to make his calls. I wondered why John had decided to devote a lifetime to service in the Church. I asked John for a frank answer and he told me many small accumulative experiences which boiled down to this: A strong Christian influence from family, friends, and church kindled, a spirit of awareness and devotion which seems to be latent in every human heart. Of course, we can't all be like John. Few of us have received the stimulus to devote our entire life to the Church. But some of John's spirit does dwell in all of us. Too often we are unaware that we possess this miraculous gift from God. Rekindle your spirit by going to church this Sunday. Copyright 1964, Keister Advertising Service, Inc., Strasburg, Va. THE CHURCH FOR ALL... ALL FOR THE CHURCH The Church is the greatest factor on earth for the building of character and good citizenship. It is a storehouse of spiritual values. Without a strong church, neither democracy nor civilization can survive. There are four sound reasons why every person should attend services regularly and support the church. They are: (1) For his own sake. (2) For his chil» dren's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4),For the sake of the church itself, which needs his moral and material support. Plan to go to church regularly and read your Bible daily.
