McHEHUT PLAINPEALEH Thursday, Jul? 30, 1964 Told Talcs FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 31, 1934) George W. Norris, a seWer contractor of Grayslake, suffered a fractured jaw here last .Thursday afternoon when he was partially buried in an avalanche of dirt while at work in a trench at the home of J. J. Vasey on the corner of Green and Pearl streets. The fifth annual outdoor gathering of the twenty-seven locals of the Fox River Valley council, American Luther league, took place at Hanly's Woods, near this city, on Sunday. The secretary of the McHenry Community club is now in communication with a Chicago man who appears very desirous of locating two small, but going manufacturing plants in this city. Two carloads of sheep from the Geo. J. Sayer farms near Pistakee Bay were loaded here on Wednesday afternoon and shipped to the Chicago market. A number of the property owners are now connected up with McHenry's new sewer system. The band stand now occupies its new site in the McHenry park on Pearl street. Moving of the band stand from Borden Park was started on Monday morning, but on account of interfering telephone wires, the stand rested on the corner near the Wm. Pries store from Monday afternoon until Wednesday morning, when the Illinois Bell Telephone company sent a gang of men to McHenry to free the obstructions while the stand was being moved up Green street. Herman Schaefer and his men did the work. Miss 1 Florence Conway was very pleasantly surprised one evening recently when upon teaching home she found a number of friends had gathered to help celebrate her birthday. After playing a few games the merry party went up to the Fox pavilion, where a few pleasant hours were spent at dancing. ' The Splinters cltib, composed of lumber dealers of McHenry, J3oone and a part of Lake county will" hold an outing in McHenry on Thursday. This club \vas organized a few months ago and is holding regular monthly meetings. F. E. Covalt, head of the McHenry Lumber company of this city, is the president of the organization. /The outing to take place here "Will be in the form of a boat ride up Fox river and around the Chain O'Lakes, taking in the famous Lotus beds. grateful to the Legion for their help. The fish measured 21 inches in length. Mrs. Lester Sherman entertained members of the little orchestra of the Community church at her home on Woodstock road Wednesday afternoon. A 1 o'clock luncheon served outdoors under cool shade trees, was followed by games. Those present were Edith and Laura Sherman. Dean McCracken, Gordon Scholle, Warren Jones, Mrs. C. W. Goodell, Mrs. Sherman and Robert Sherman. Elaine Landgren, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Landgren, was pleasantly surprised at her home on the eve of her birthday. Relatives and friends made up the happy gathering. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 27, 1939) Mr. and Mrs. Peter M. Justen are building a new funeral home, first in our city, now under construction on Illinois Routes 20 and 31, West McHenry. It is being built in memory of the late N. J. The American Legion, as a token of gratitude to all those who helped make the carnival a success and believing that help to the library will benefit the whole town, has voted to give the library $200. The Mothers club, as well as the town as a whole, is deeply TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 29, 1954) The city's volunteer firemen were called to West Shore Beach, McCullom Lake, Sunday night to administer oxygen to a Chicagoan who narrow ly escaped drowning. In a story told to local firemen, Mr. Wiltowski said he and a friend had gone out in a boat and then decided to do some swimming. Air conditioning for one room or the entire house is rapidly becoming as necessary to many American families as heat in the winter or a refrigerator in the kitchen. By 1955 more than three million families will own room air conditioners, and market experts predict this number will jump to almost nineteen million by 1964. Albin R. Olson of McCullom Lake has retired after fortyseven years' association with a Chicago industry and is now enjoying a well earned rest. Thoughts of the Red Cross and its work brings to mind the story of a McHenry youngster, Kathleen Phelan, 9, who narrowly escaped drowning recently on the local beach. The instructor for the summer swimming Red Cross program and two lifeguards had dismissed classes and were about to leave for another beach when they heard the distress call of the child. Ragne Hiscox, one of the guards, immediately removed her lifesaving jacket and helmet and soon reached Kathleen,, who was overcome with fatigue because of the swift current. ff31 I I t I I I I I I f I I V I I I 1 I t 1 1 B I I I I I I • I I It. 37c OFF WITH THIS COUPON Baby-Safe LUX-NAMEl <vM E .'v&yy: One-coat, washable high gloss enamel for cribs, playpens, furniture ami toys.
