July 30, 1964) O UNIT 491 By Mary Einspar cMiss Jeanne Joe Benoche presented her Girl Stater's report at the regular monthly meeting of the McHenry Unit 491 American Legion auxiliary. President Betty Lingenfelter presided. Miss Benoche thanked the unit for sponsoring her at Girl's State and made the following comments. "Some of us do not appreciate what a wonderful privilege it is to be an American citizen. We sometimes forget what bur own lives FIKES ACTIVE AT VETERINARY MEDICINE MEETING Dr. and Mrs. Howard S. Fike have returned from the 101st national convention of the American Veterinary Medicine association held in the Conrad Hilton hotel, Chicago. Mrs. Fike was a delegate from the Northern Illinois district auxiliary, of which she is president, and a hostess for the state auxiliary, of which she is a past officer. Dr. Fike served on the television committee of the closed circuit T.V. and also performed an operation on the "practice tip' part of the television program. During the convention, they attended a reunion of friends who had be<?n with them on their European trip last summer and who had also attended the seventh World Veterinarian Congress in Hanover, Germany. The reunion was held in the presidential suite of Dr. Knowles, president of the American Veterinary Medicine association. The McHenry couple counted it a thrilling experience to know this was the same suite Queen Elizabeth stayed in when visiting Chicago. Jeanne Benoche, left, and Betty Lingenfelter. represent, and we think that being just one citizen out of millions, our votes in elections or our small contributions through our daily work mean nothing. For that simple reason we must all do everything we can with our votes and our lives. We must turn them into important, worthwhile contributions to our democracy. We must all use our one vote for proper community, state and national government in the future. No matter how old or how young we are, if we each work together uniting our individual contributions, we can mold them into something greater than some of us realize." "I am so glad I was sent to Girls State. Now that I have learned the true meaning of .being a good citizen, I intend to work together with my fellow citizens and make my life worthwhile by helping to build a better future America." Miss Sandy Josserand, sponsored by the Past President's Parley of McHenry Unit 491, is a second alternate ,for the annual nurse scholarship in the Department of Illinois contest. Mrs"Lauretta Homo presented an award to Connie Miller for her effort in the Junior TV Jury Ballot conducted by the Department of Illinois American Legion auxiliary. Margaret Pickett was present to collect the monthly attendance award. Awards were also presented to guest, St alia Mazzoni, and member, Reba Owen. There will be no regular monthly meeting in August. The next regular monthly meeting will be held Sept. 21. The kitchen committee will be announced in a future column. NEW ILLINOIS DRIVER LICENSE EXAMINERS NAMED Appointment of four new driver license examiners has been announced by Secretary of State William H. Chamberlain. They are George F. Marcus of Wheaton, Jack Sullivan of Addison, Vincent R. Magee of Ingleside and Don R. Hartmarin of Antioch. Secretary Chamberlain also announced the termination of the services of Morris L. Agles of East St. Louis as driver l i cense examiner, and the resignations of Harold B. Brewer of Woodstock as driver license examiner and Donald G. Kahn of West Peoria as automobile investigator. BRUCE STRATTON RECOGNIZED FOR FORENSIC WORK Bruce Stratton, recent graduate of the Chicago Kent College of Law, was named recipient of the Webster H. Burke memorial award in forensics for his work in the National Moot Court program. Mr. Stratton and his wife are both graduates of Knox college at Galesburg and will live in that city when he returns from summer reserve duty with the Marine corps in California. He will be associated with a law firm there. During his college days, he was editor of the Kent Law Review and the writer of an article on "Racial Problems in Housing". The young man is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Stratton of 546 W. Jackson street, Woodstock. Mrs. Stratton is the former Carolyn Regner. YOUNG 4-H'ers COMPETE AT STATE FAIR NEXT MONTH M. Y. F. NEWS. Members of the Methodist Youth Fellowship are preparing for the ice cream social which will be held in the basement of the church on Sunday, Aug. 2. The public is invited to enjoy pies, cakes, sundaes and ice cream. There will be a lawn party at the home of Rev. Ernest Carder on Sunday, Aug. 9. The Community Clovers 4-H club of Richmond will present their Share-the-Fun act at the Illinois State Fair on Saturday evening, Aug. 15 in the Junior Home Economics Building auditorium. The evening program begins at 7:30 p.m. Roger Manke of the Hartland Hotshots 4-H club will try for a position as master of ceremonies for the evening. Camille Kaminski, Algonquin and Bill Forgey, Woodstock yvill represent the county in the public speaking contest which takes place at 9 a.m. on Monday, Aug., 17, on the fair ground. All of the above were winners in McHenry county contests which enables them to attend the Illinois State Fair. Shriners Plan Outing Shriners Ben Arvidson, Dr. F. S. Together with officers and board members of the McHenry County Shrine club, they planned to open a way for some lucky children in the McHenry area to attend the Shrine circus in Rockford on Aug. 12, 13, 14 and 15. County Shrine club members are paying for the tickets and donating them to the youngsters, who will no doubt count the outing among their treasured summer memories.
