SU»» a CAROL BATBMAN 885-5188 Dawn McKim Chosen Queen Dawn McKim who will be five in October was crowned "Miss McCullom Lake" before a crowd of hundreds at the beach Saturday night as her big sister wept. There was good reason for the tears because Karen turned 15 on that date and was the first Miss McCullom Lake 10 years ago. The junior »beauty 'contest was the brain child of Paul Struck who now resides in Hebron. Other details appear on the first page ©f the Plalndealer. The very lovely child of Mi*, and Mrs. Ed Whitney--Janet, placed second during the puspenseful judging and adorable little Daureen Parenti was third. Judges were Bernice Just of the Waukegan News-Sun,' Frank May of Richmond, and John McDonald, staff member of the Elgin-Courier. Winners of the buggy promenade were Sandy and Debbie Straumann first, Colleen Godina in second place, and Libby Marie Dq^piiano third. Eileen Klapperich was chairman. Bike parade winners include Matt Levesque first, Bruce Thacker in second place, and Donny Parenti third. Gail and Richard Johnson handled the details. One of the features of the festival which attracted a large audience was the wild animal show held at 5:15 p.m. Mgst popular attraction was "dump the sitter" and brought in large amount of "loot". Targets included Ken Betts, Bill Walter, Stewart Norbert Lorch, John Klapperich, village president Jake Levesque, and others. A great deal of merriment when the target was hit with a ball and the man in the cage was dropped into a tank of water. Chairman Bill Walter and Myra Murray were extremely gratified with wonderful results which attracted the largest crowd since the festival's inception. Many of our residents contributed a great deal of time and effort contributing to the success and they are all to be commended. Many of the teenagers lent invaluable assistance. Richard Johnson did a superb job of handling the mike for the various featup?s and kept everyone informed ""of each activity. 290 Miles For A Picnic This might set a new record for picnics but every moment was worthwhile! Last week, the four Levesque youngsters and Don Nelson with mama Levesque behind the wheel drove 290 miles for a picnic, sightseeing and swimming. Our destination was Galena, 111. historical old town featuring ' the home of President U. S. Grant. We left our driveway at 7 a.m. and breakfasted just outside of Marengo. Then it was on to Belvidere, through Rockford, Freeport. and on up to Galena, via Route 20. We toured the home, cooked hamburgers in the park just below his home, and went through the historical museum which featured items about all the American wars. After lunch, the young guys and gals swam in the local pool and then we journeyed some 40 miles on the homeward leg to Apple River Canyon State Park located near Apple River (a wide spot in the road!) The kids followed the path which was the oldest stage coach trail in Illinois. Many hours after leaving home we returned at 7:30 p.m., rather weary, but very gratified. Sincerely, Eve Levesque. Fractured At Festival Don Lorch had the misfortune of getting fractured at the McCullom Lake Festival July 25. When I say fractured I mean it in the literal sense of the word. Don tripped arid fell at the beach after the festivities and fractured his leg in two places. He was taken to the McHenry hospital by ambulance where he is presently in traction and at the moment doctors are considering surgery to set the broken bones. With Don's constitution he should come through with flying colors though and be up and around again in no time at all. Vacation Jaunt Mrs. Ruth Radke of 5217 West Fountain Lane returned home July 17 from a week's jaunt through Illinois spent visiting her relatives. First stbp was in Granville, 111., where she visited her daughter and her family, Betty and Merlyn Holm berg. The Holmbergs had journeyed to McHenry to spend the Fourth of July weekend with her so this was a return visit for Mrs. Radtke. While there they celebrated her daughter's birthday which was on the 17th of July. Next stop was Oak Park where Mrs. Radke spent some time with her eighty-nine year old mother, Mrs. Sarah Gans. Talk about it being a small world! An unexpected surprise was in store for her when she discovered that her mother's next door neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Schroeder, and their daughter and son-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Iversoni were giving a yard dinner-party for her son and his wife, Richard and Ann Radke and their six little ones. Mrs. Radke's son and his family live in Sunnyside Estates yet it was in Oak Park that the family met and spent the day together. Upon returning home Mrs. Radke found her vegetable garden was overgrown with weeds up to her knees and speculates that the duration of the summer will be spent in trying to uproot them. Home From The Hospital Friends and neighbors of Gus Lakeberg are thrilled to hear that he has finally returned to his home in Lakewood Subdivision after spending two months as a patient in the McHenry hospital. Mr. Lakeberg underwent two major operations during his confinement and is now convalescing very nicely at home. The day his friends are waiting for is when his voice will once again be heard ringing through the Community Methodist Church in McHenry where he is a featured soloist. The day before he underwent his first operation was the last time he soloed in church and his presence has certainly been missed. Hope it won't be missed much longer. Vacation Vagabonds Theresa, Will, ahd Lynne Schultz and Bernice Ann Bjork spent about one week vacationing in Minnesota and Wisconsin. They rented a trailer for the trip and just drifted through the country wherever their heart's desire took them. They had a real terrific time' and say that's the best way to spend a vacation; just doing what you want to but of course, it's always nice to come again. The Truth About The Alligator Rumor A few anxious peolpe have phoned me in regard to the rumor about an alligator being loose in our lake that I had mentioned some weeks ago. One little boy in Lakeland Park claims to have seen it and states that it was seven feet long, had gaping bloody jaws and tried to eat him alive. I was very sorry to hear that the rumor had gotten so out of hand and will try to calm all qualms about it. The alligator in question was six inches long and brought up here from Florida three-quarters dead before it arrived. Some children felt sorry for it and threw it in the lake but after Investigation I found out that it is impossible for it to survive in this climate. It was thrown in the lake last summer and absolutely could not have lived through our severe winter. So mothers, please have no fears about letting your child swim in the lake for there is no danger of any kind present. HOW ABOUT SOME NEWS??? ' WATER SUPPLY The Illinois water supply storage situation is generally better than it was a year ago, according to an announcement released by T. E. Larson, acting chief of the Illinois State Water Survey. From the April June period rainfall has been l-to-2 inches above normal in northwestern and central Illinois and near normal in the rest of the northern half of the state. Although southern Illinois reservoirs are mostly full and stream flow throughout the state is described as "adequate," some localities in southern Illinois have had only 7 to 8 inches of rain in a 3-month period that normally has 12 to 13 inches. (Established In McHenry Since 1948) Home Owners News LADD ENTERPRISES In buying a home, what do you consider first? How to pay for it? Where to get a down payment? How much additional space you'd like to have? Or, do you first decide whetfe you'd like to live, then look at various homes in a community and choose your favorite location? We think all those things are important. We try to offer sound advice on questions like these. One reason Ladd Enterprises plans its home-building as a development is to assure buyers of a solid location. Sometimes developments don't go as well as those who start them figure -- partly because of over-optimism and partly because of inexperience. When Ladd's looks at a community, just as it looked at Woodstock and McHenry early this year, it consodered many things before it decided to start Clermont in the All-America City and go ahead with Millstream in the Fox River city. We studied the amount of building taking place, the number of people expected to move here because of new industries or more thriving businesses. We studied the home market conditions and we also worked to find a suitable location big enough to accommodate quite a few homes. After all, the Ladd name and reputation goes on these homes, and we want to be sure they maintain or increase in value. tn Woodstock, Ladd's has two model homes at Clermont, located on Route 47 north, not far from Northwood school and just a half-mile north of the new St. John's church. Other homes by Ladd are being erected in other parts of Woodstock as well as in Clermont. In McHenry, a similar picture exists. Ladd's has two model homes open and is building tooth in Millstream and on lots owned by customers who have seen Ladd models and want the best dollar possible in their new home. Model homes do give buyers a clearcut idea of just what is offered at a specific price. They show construction care and also show how a model can be modified to meet the specific need or "just for pleasure" desires of a family. Of course, financing can be studied, too, because when you see a Ladd model home, you know Just what your costs will be Ladd Enterprises is proud to be building in Woodstock and McHenry, proud also to be McHenry county's fastest-growing builder-developer, and aware also of the big responsibility it may have as Illinois' biggeet home builder this year. You can depend on Ladd's to make customer satisfaction truly first and a continuing endeaVor, too. In this series of stories, we want to tell you more about our company, its business philosophy, and how it helps its customers get the best dollar value possible for his home-buying money.
