THE McHERH* PLAINDEALEB Thursday. August 6.-1964 SO I HEAR... Attention Shamrocks -- Old Timers -- John Knox left word that the Shamrocks are playing an Old Timers' game here next Sunday at 2 p.m. at A. P. Freund Field. Any Old Timer who ever played with the Shamrocks is invited to show up and be ready for action. A picnic is planned for after the ball game so it looks like a big afternoon. Miles Barry, who has been giving us weekly news on safeboating, has decided to call it off for this season. We presume he will still continue inspection of boats, a service he has been giving all summer on his own time. Boating, especially safe-boating, is important in our area. Thanks for your stories, Miles. Sorry, we do not have tickets for the All-Star football game. Have had several requests. Will try again next year. How those big football players can stand the rough practice in this hot weather is more than we can understand. But, it's All-Star time and both players and fans are excited. It is a great sports event. The guy who said, "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it" must have had this summer in mind. A Texan was gardening in his back yard when he was startled to see a space ship swoop down out of the blue and land in the middle of his lawn. A hatch opened and several little green men climbed out. Immediately they began to scan the landscape with field glasses. Curious, the Texan dropped his rake-and cautiously approached the ^little green men. "Excuse me," he said, "but what are you fellows looking for?" One of thejittle green men glanced at ' him scornfully and answered, "Little green women, of course." We still think big league catchers tip off outside pitches Just when we got to thinking this right hand, left hand batter substitution was the bunk, the Detroit Tigers put right hander A1 Demeter in for Norm Cash and he blasted a 3- run homer off Gary Peters. Sunday afternoon, Aug. 2, found the McHenry County league All Stars invading Johnsburg. This was an annual affair, the All Stars vs. the league champs from the previous year. As usual it turned out to be a well played ball game on both sides, but the young Tigers camef up with a real team effort in winning one of the best games they played all year. *The final score was 3-0 and all the runs were scored in the bottom of the eighth. Ted Freund reached first on Tim Farr's error. Harry May drew a base on balls, then Bob Hiller singled to load the bases. Ed Mack then tripled to left, scoring all three base runners. Defense and pitching were the big stories of the game. Jim Schields, Bill DeCicco and Ed Mack shared pitching honors for the Tigers. Shields and DeCicco pitched terrific ball during their three inning stints while Mack had to have great defense support to stop the All Stars from scoring. Mack received credit for the victory while Peacock took the loss. Saturday, Aug. 8, the Johnsburg Tigers will play at Genoa, 111. in the first game of the Illinois Amateur Baseball Tournament. Crystal Lake jumped off to a 2 to 0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as they took advantage of three walks and an error. Paul Adams drove in McHenry's first run in the top of the second with a hard single to center field. Paul Adams, Phil Oeffling and Tim Freund finished the game scoring in the fifth inning as they scored our 2nd, 3rd and 4th run of the night. Highlights of the inning was the suicide squeeze which Tim Freund and Dan Jamieson executed. Jim Meyers and Tim Freund both pitched well with Tim Freund picking up the win. The game of the day will have to go to Art Jackson, who possibly shot the lowest score in a championship match -- a real great total of 67. The boys are really playing hard in this year's club championship, and although Art came through with this big round, he still didn't overtake Ed Buss, who followed Art in with a 69 to stay one stroke in the lead. Reports have reached us of several good catches of northern pike being taken from Pistakee Lake on, of all things, "Spoonplugs". Many fishermen will remember the big writeups a few years back, proclaiming the revolutionary advance in fishing, made possible by the invention of the Spoonplug. We tried them in 5 states and never got a strike--looks like we didn't read the directions thoroughly. To date more than 40,000 persons have applied for shotgun deer hunting permits. The following counties have reached the quotas established by the conservation department: Carroll, Jo Daviess, McHenry, Stephenson, Clinton, Gallatin, Hardin, Johnson, Pope Northern, Pope Southern, Saline, Ogle, Mason, Hamilton, and Williamson.
