Although McHenry has never been noted as a good Monday night show town, an exceptionally large audience turned out on this occasion. P. J. Landt of Chicago has rented the Heimer block on Kim street for a number of years occupied by the McHenry Bakery, where he will open up on next Monday morning a reupholstering and furniture repairing shop. Miss Elvera Heimer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Heimer of Riverside drive, has gone to Chicago, where she has entered the Garfield Park hospital for the purpose of taking up a regular course of training to fit herself for a nurse. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Adams and son, Eugene, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. John Pitzen of Johnsburg, drove to Joliet last Sunday, where they were guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry VanGills. Paul Bonslett and George Barbian returned home from a ten-day auto trip to New York City. They made the trip to the East via Detroit and Buffalo, while they returned home via Pittsburg. They also crossed the border into Canada. Martin B. Schmitt has the barber shop located in the new quarters in the basement of the Simon Stoffel block, the move having taken place last week. Sunday, Sept. 7, was the occasion of the annual reunion of the relations of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ward. Seven automobiles filled with Chicagoans wended their way to McHenry to join in the happy festivities. Six thousand feet of war film of pictures taken in France during the late war and a mem who saw service during the time to explain them as they are being shown on the screen is the treat in store for theatre goers of this community who visit the Empire theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday nights of next week. The opening of the community high and grade schools here this week showed a slight increase in attendance. According to the Daily News, Yorke Bodden, the sweetheart of the dead girl's sister, confessed the crime to Capt. Daniel Gilbert Saturday morning and said that the girl died of strangulation after he had placed her, unconscious, bound and gagged, under the rear seat of his car. Sgt. L. R. Bacon and Lt. Charles A. Stanton go to the head of the class when safe drivers are named. The officers of the Elgin district of Illinois Highway Police, merited the Gov. Horner trophy for driving 170,583 miles without a single accident. Charles Burton's boat, sailed by Howard Hansen, won the Wonder Lake trophy race on Labor Day. The Burton boat covered the 14-mile course in two hours and thirty-one minutes. The Labor Day race has been an annual event by the Wonder Lakers. Mrs. Catherine Demock arrived from Chicago to pay a visit to her only brother in Johnsburg, Joseph Thelen, who ha§ been very ill. Vincent Wirfs, who is employed with the W. F. Barns company of Rockford, was sent to California to take charge of some hydraulic pumps in the oil fields of that vicinity. Vincent, having been working for the company for six years, expects to remain out West for some time. Mrs. William Pries and daughter, Helen, vacationed for a few days at Hayward, Wis., returning home with a load of fish. In one <of the largest weddings ever held at the Methodist church, Marion Anderson, daughter of John A. Anderson, became the lovely and charming bride of James Reinlie of Chicago. TEN YEARS AQO (Taken from the files of September 9, 1954) The sixth annual air meet of the "99's", Chicago chapter of the international organization of women pilots, will be held at DuPage airport, near Wayne, 111., next Sunday, Sept. 12. Taking part in the meet will be a McHenry girl, Miss Florence Lacy, who resides southwest of the city. The "99's" was so named because of the number of lady pilots belonging to the organization when it was formed twenty-five years ago by the late Amelia Erhardt. Several leaders in the youth program of the Methodist church attended the annual planning conference held over the weekend, at Garrett Biblical Institute, Evanston. Major item of business at the clinic was the planning of events for the coming year. Ferdinand Frett, known to hundreds of local residents during his almost half century spent here, died at his home on Park street following a long illness. Suzanne, 9-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Kauss, narrowly escaped serious injuries when she was struck by a car at the corner of Green and Elm streets on Labor Day evening. Col. Jules B. Gonseth, Jr., son of Mrs. Jules E. Gonseth, Sr., is presently serving at Ft. Sill, Okla., as assistant commandant of the Army Aviation school. He served with the signal section of headquarters in the Far East prior to thirtyfive months' occupation duty in Japan. He was awarded the Legion of Merit for his work in the Far East. Little Karen Sue McKlm, 6 years old, was proclaimed Miss McCullom Lake at the 1954 fall festival held at the beach grounds on Saturday night and attended by 2,288 persons. Runners- up were Sandra Wetzel and Deborah Wallace. The large barn on Mrs. Delia Miller's farm at Johnsburg and oeprated by her son, Leroy, and his family, burned to the ground on Saturday morning. In addition to the barn, the loss was heavy in feed and equipment. Lloyd Gaulke of Crystal Lake, a brother of Alice Gaulke of McHenry, died unexpectedly of a heart attack early on Tuesday morning, Sept. 7. Mr. and Mrs. George Wirfs and son, Stephen, left on Tuesday for St. Petersburg, Fla., where they will make their home. A short in the air conditioning unit was blamed for the fii'e which ruined the window in which it was installed and resulted in extensive smoke damage at the Elmer Freund home on Center street.
