September 17, i964 THE MCHENRY PLAINDEALER Twice Told Tales ' forty years ago (Taken from the files of Thursday, Sept. 18, 1924) The members of the McHenry City Council, in special session last evening, purchased a fire truck which will be delivered in about forty-five days. The outfit selected is one known as the commerce model 25. manufactured by the Obenchain- Boyer company of Loganport, Ind. Mrs. Edward J. Buss entertained a few friends at her home at a surprise birthday party in honor of Miss Mayme liuss. The evening was passed at bunco, after which a most delicious luncheon was served. Those Who made up the happy gathering were Misses Clara and Ksther Stoffel, Anna Frisbv, Eleanor Kinsala, Theresa Knox and Theresa Brefeld. During the past week representatives of two different concerns have visited McHenry .with a view of locating their plants in this city. They are an auto truck and art underwear concern. The new cement sidewalk on the west side of Court street, from Broad to Washington streets, is now completed and in use. A new cement walk is also to be constructed along the west side of Riverside drive and also on the north side of Waukegan road from the McHenry grade school building to the Harvey Barron home. Building operations still continue along the Fox river. At the present time several new cottages are under construction along the shores of our beautiful stream. Miss Barbara Smith of Johnsburg and Raymond Ralph Horick of Woodstock were united in marriage by Rev. Wm. Weber at St. John's Catholic church in Johnsburg. A most unfortunate and particularly sad automobile fatality occurred in front of the farm home of John Smith on the McIIenry-Johnsburg road about 4 o'clock oft Thursday afternoon when a car from Fox Lake struck and killed Elmer S. Smith, S-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Smith, who reside on the Fred W. Huernann farm. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Thursday, Sept. 14, 1939) Mrs. Albert Vales, accompanied by her son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. William Vales, and the latter's mother, Mrs. John Micklautz, set out on a twelveday trip through the West, visiting Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska and Iowa. Miss Evelyn Anderson and Miss Wanda Jepson, talented young musicians, are assisting in leading roles in the home talent Prairie Farmer show being given in Waukegan. Miss Anderson has been a remarkable entertainer on WMRO, the Aurora broadcasting station, for many weeks, charming radio listeners with her beautiful voice. The names of 108 women and 192 men on the list for jury service for the year 1940 were approved by the county board. This is the first jury list selected under the new state law, making it eligible for women to serve on juries. The list is for service in the Circuit court. Harold J. Bacon, formerly employed for several years at the West McHenry State Bank and former sports editor for the Plaindealor, was elected president of Group 3 of the Illinois Bankers association at the annual meeting held at Crystal Lake. Group 3 conprises the counties of Boone, Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Kane, Lake and McHenry. The Otto Mueller family, who formerly resided on Waukegan street, moved recently to a home near the golf course. Miss Geraldine Engels, daughter Mr. and Mrs. William Engels of Spring Grove, and Mr. Joseph Hiller of Johnsburg were united in marriage at St. Peter's church at Spring Grove Sept. 13. Eddie Mathews and Billy Pries left Monday for a vacation in Florida. ten years ago (Taken from the files of Thursday, Sept. 16, 1954) Three Chicago men were rescued from a burning boat on Monday evening which might have had a tragic ending had it not been for the quick action of firemen and folks living along the river. On Sept. 1 of this year, Miss Maureen Henn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Al Henn, left for southern California, where she will make her home with her aunt and uncle, while, she is attending Mount St. Mary's college in Brentwood Hills, L. A. One of the most beautiful weddings ever solemnized in McHenry took place last Saturday morning in St. Patrick's church, the ceremony uniting in marriage Miss Mary Unti and Lt. John Thies. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Stenger of Indianapolis, Ind., were recent visitors in McHenry, Mr. Stenger will be remembered as former cashier of the local bank. Pa's Yanks, playing steady ball plus hitting when hits count, defeated the Palace Recreation last Friday night 14 to 7. The victory gave Pa's the championship for 1954. The Community Methodist church was the scene of a pretty wedding last Saturday when Miss Marion Springman, daughter of the Carl Springmans, became the bride of Mr. Marvin Raymond Olson of Island Lake. The J. B. Steinbach family has moved from McCullom Lake to their new home on Oak street, McHenry. Twin sons were bom Sept. 10 at the Woodstock hospital to Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Sund. Edward Winkels, 53, of Lotus avenue, Chicago, died at Wonder Lake Saturday, Sept. 11, where he was building a summer home. There were between forty and fifty members of the McHenry Choral club present at the first meeting Monday night,. Indications point to a record membership this fall. " McHenry Future Farmers of America officers extended their first school week until Saturday noOn by attending the Section 6 F.F.A. officers' training school at Lake Villa conservation camp on Sept. 11. Fourteen schools with a total of seventy-two F.F.A. officers and their advisors were represented. UNIT 491 County Medical Assistants To Meet The September meeting of the MCMAA will be held on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m. It will take place at the office of Dr. H. A. Stahlecker, at 668 W. Jackson street in Woodstock. There is a very interesting speaker for this meeting. He is Dr. H. A. Stahlecker, whose subject will be "Obstetrics and Gynecology." The chapter is still in its infancy and all members are urged to attend this meeting. Medical assistants in McHenry county are invited. ADVERTISE I The Board of Education Grant Community High School FOX LAKE, ILLINOIS Presents Fall Semester of ULT EVENING SCHOOL CLASSES by Mary Elnsapr McHenry Unit 491 of the American Legion auxiliary held their annual budget meeting Sept. 10 at the American Legion home. President Lydia Fenner presided. The new budget was prepared and will be presented to the members at the September meeting for approval. Following the budget meeting, nine officers and fourteen chairman were present for an executive board meeting. The officers and chairman read their duties from the American Legion auxiliary-by-laws and pledge their support. Allee Carroll and Sandra Lock were delegated to attend the county meetings. Mary Kantorski and Delia Freund were elected alternates. Refreshment committee chairman were chosen for the year. Past President Betty Lingenfelter will'be'chairman in September and her officers of last year will assist. Seventy members were present at the McHenry County council meeting Sept. 11. County President Ruth Mrachek presided. The county auxiliary will visit the Woodstock Children's home on the fourth Friday of each month. On the third Sunday of each month they will visit the Valley Hi Nursing home in Hartland. Members were asked by Legislative Chairman Winifred Hammond to write to their senators urging them to support Bill HR 1927 to liberalize the veterans' pension law. Music Chairman Mae Chesak will stress the singing of the last stanza of "The Star Spangled Banner" this year at all county meetings and has asked the unit music chairman to do likewise. Marge Elvis, second vicepresident of the council, informed the members that there are currently 750 patients at Elgin State hospital. The units will entertain the patients the third Wednesday of each month. Special parties will be held in December, March, May and July. All units were asked to take toothpaste, tobacco, cigars, stationery, candy bars »(without nuts), fruit, coin purses, wallets and pipes for the patients. Ties, shaving lotion and hair tonic are not acceptable. A special request was made for empty spools which the patients use for many projects. County Commander Harold Vycital has invited the'auxiliary to attend a special rehabilitation program Oct. 22 at Lake-In-The Hills Legion home. District Director Barbara Bieritz will hold a district meeting Oct. 3, at Geneva. Registration will be at 9 a.m. The McHenry County Past Presidents' parley will hold their fall dinner meeting in Hebron on Oct. 15. The McHenry County council will hold their next meeting Oct. 2 in. Richmond. The junior auxiliary of McHenry Unit 491 will meet at 1 p.m. Sept. 19. Installation of officers will be held at this meeting. All Juniors are reminded that their dues should lie paid at this meeting or as soon as possible. Junior activities chairman for this year is Mary Einspar and co-chairman is Barbara Hansen. TB OFFICIALS ATTEND SEAL PROGRAM MEET Representatives of the McHenry County Tuberculosis association attended a Christmas Seal Program Development conference held in DeKalb, Sept. 9. Mrs. Claribel Nay lor, R. N., executive director and tuberculosis nurse, and Mrs. Evelyn Mengs, office secretary, represented this county at the meeting, sponsored by the Illinois Tuberculosis association that was attended by thirty-eight people from fifteen counties. The morning session was devoted to a discussion of the forthcoming Christmas Seal campaign which officially opens Nov. 16. The importance of a wellplanned campaign was stressed, with special emphasis given to the use of volunteer workers in the annual drive to raise funds to fight tuberculosis. Ben D. Kiningham, executive director of the state association, who presided at the meeting, announced the campaign theme as "It's No Secret--We Can Lick TB!", and urged those present to "inform the people in your communities that we have the tools necessary to lick TB. If the unknown cases are found early, and hospitalized under proper medical supervision, the spread of infection to other people can be greatly reduced." It was also pointed out that tuberculosis is proving to be more stubborn than was anticipated a decade ago. An outline for the course of action in the eradication of TB was given with certain program priorities listed. Some of these were: Tuberculin tests of all school enterers and chest xrays for those found positive; clinical follow-up of patients for at least ifve years or preferably for life! prescribed use of preventive drug treatment; expanded medical research; proper record keeping; and extensive x-raying and TB testing in high risk and high incidence areas.
