Section Ds PaffA Pftii* THE McHENRY PLAIM0EALEH Thufsd&lfi September 17, 1384 Since the time has come to go west for a couple of days, we are getting this column out early. It may be short the way things shape up at the moment. Yep. the time has come to pump up the tires and load up the bus with clothing, books, typewriter, boxes and more boxes -- a thousand and one items that a girl takes from her home and somehow crowds into one room when she goes to school. But, this year everything will be much simpler. We plan a second trip later to deliver the winter clothing. That decision was made after considering the use of Bill Kreutzer's beer truck to load up everything at once. Somebody decided that the good nuns at Clarke College might cast a quizzical eye at us if we pulled up with the beer truck ready to unload. Marie Yegge doesn't know it. but we plan to have all sports page news hit her desk this week. The boss man, Larry Lund, has a picture of the Warrior football squad that should run this week to brighten up the sport page. Remember tl¥e first Warrior game of the season will be played at Grayslake on Saturday afternoon of this week. Gene Brooke will again cover high school games while yours truly gathers comments from the sheltered confines of the press box. Rugged! At this writing, we are in a weakened condition from listening to the White Sox skid into third place. Of course, we are sure they will bounce up again. If they don't, what a flock of letters will come our way! The grapevine tells us that some people are anxiously waiting to let us have it. PICKUPS-- What would a cannibal be, who ate his mother's sister? An Aunt eater. worm in an apple? Half a worm. What is worse than finding a that is sleeping? Bulldozer. Cross Country Team Opens Fall mm Under its new coach, Don Seaton, the Mclfenry cross country team ope^s its season this Thursday at 4:15. All home meets are run at Mc- Cracken field. The McHenry boys would appreciate all the support they can get. Cross country is a sport that takes a lot of determination and Work and it would be appreciated by the team if we all could go out to the meets and show the boys we appreciate their efforts. Coach Seaton stated that "the team has shown a lot of determination in pushing themselves to--and past--the threshhold of pain in recent workouts. The boys have kept running when it would have been easy to slow down or stop. If determination can do it, we will improve considerably through out the season." The success or failure of this season will depend considerably on Mike Zvonar. Mike appears to be the team's outstanding runner. However, he is out for an indefinite period of time due to a recent injury. Other boys on the squad are James Anderson, David Dimon. Dean Glosson, Mike Hatch. Wayne Hiller, Jerry Luciano. The Sophomore team will play at 12:30 and the Varsity players will start their game at 2 p.m. After four solid weeks of practice Coach Dean Hargis has his squad in good shape and hopes there will be a good crowd of McHenry rooters follow the team in its initial appearance this fall. The 7:30 p.m. game will be played at Warner Field on Sherman avenue in Madison. It will be Edgewood's third game and it will be seeking its third win. A year ago, Marion edged the Wisconsin school 7-0. Parsley's squad displayed aggressive football in an intrasquad battle Saturday. The Marian coach, starting his sixth season as athletic director and head coach, figures his squad has the capacity to trip Edgewood with strong line play and hard-hitting tackling. Loss of Gene Church with a knee injury will lessen backfield depth, but rapid progress by the remaining makes the absence of a probable regular less painful. Mike DeWane, 180-pound Woodstock sophomore, seems to have moved into a starting berth, pairing at halfback with John Moriarity. 165-pound Crystal Lake junior. Tim Murphy, Woodstock senior, continues to sparkle at quarterback but he has also been working at halfback with the possibility of giving Marian added use of its most experienced and most powerful backs. Parsley is fortunate to have two excellent quarterbacks so he can shift Murphy. Butch Simonini, Algonquin, shares the signal calling duties. Gary Beiers, Wonder Lake senior, has made a convincing transition from end. Beiers weighs 180 pounds. Bob Kristensen, Woodstock senior, is Beiers' reserve, and one combination Parsley plans finds Beiers and Murphy at halfback, Simonini at quarterback arid Kristensen at fullback. In the line, the team is t\yodeep in most positions. Starring line on offense should average 185 pounds in the middle. Wayne Comeau, Lake-inthe Hills senior and John Hinner, Woodstock junior, each weigh 200 pounds. 1 Joe Lundborg, Wonder Lake senior, weighs 175 pounds and so does Jim May, Spring Grove senior. If Tom Majercik of Wonder Lake replaces May, the average would improve a bit. At center, Tom O'Brien ha's bested Mike Pitzen for the starting berth on offense. But both are aggresive and will play on defense as linebackers. O'Brien, Woodstock senior, weighs 160 pounds. Pitzen, McHenry senior weighs 175 pounds. Frank Schepers, 245 pound Crystal Lake senior, will move into the line on defense. Tom Kobza will enjoy defense, alternating with Comeau. John Gende, McHenry end, has been a student on defense so will play as a linebacker. Marian plays its first season in the suburban Catholic league this year and its first league game will be Oct. 4 when Immaculate Conception comes to Woodstock. On Sept. 27, the Hurricanes open at home, entertaining Bishop Boy- Ian of Rockford. TIGERS WIN SECOND GAME IN PLAY OFF SERIES the whole crowd to their home following the banquet. A real Hootenanny session was held led by Bill and Joan Copley and Earl Bird's father who was visiting here from Vermont. Many NIB members will he hunting the last week of September and October in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. Hope everyone will be good sportsmen and respect one anothers property and have fun in a good clean way. This victory put the Tigers in good position to win the playoffs by beating McHenry this coming Sunday. The Tigers had to come from behind with five runs early in the game to overcome a 2 run McHenry lead. Ted Freund led off the 4th inning with a walk. Lloyd Smith, Jim Hermes, Bob Hiller and Lloyd Freund all followed with singles. At this point Schmitt came in to relieve Mauer. But before he could get the side out, Bill DeCicco singled for the fifth Tiger hit and fifth run of the inning. McHenry bounced back with a run in the sixth which scored on a walk and a fielder's choice. In the seventh McHenry scored again to make the score 5 to 4. VBill DeCicco replaced starting pitcher Jim Shields in the seventh. I DeCicco was touched for am unearned run in the eighi^which knotted the score as McEphry scored without a hit. In the bottom of the eighth the Tigers bunched 7 hits together to score the winning run. Bill DeCicco drove ti?e run in with a 2. out single to win his own ball game. Ed Macft: finished up in the ninth for Johnsburg. The Tigers made the most of their hits by getting all of them in the innings in which they scored. McHenry managed only 3 hits aganist 3 Tiger pitchers. Jim Shields pitched well enough to win but tired slightly in the seventh when he was replaced. Next Sunday the game will be played at McHenry. Ron Santo autographed baseballs and each program that each boy and parent brought up. With a short speech on his experiences, Mr. Santo had boys ask questions which he would c.nswer. I'm sure that the boys and parents won't forget that wonderful evening. With the help of Ron Santo, Paul Schwegel presented trophies to the champions, the Cards. To the sponsors VFW, Mr. Doran the Commander of the organization was presented the first place trophy. Each boy that played on the Cards received a trophy, also their manager Frank Camasta and coach Joe Prazak. The boys who did a wonderful job are as follows.
