They say the weather and scenery were magnificent. Legion Auxiliary News The meeting night for October has been changed to the second Thursday of October, Oct. 8, due to the Past Presidents' dinner which honors the fine ladies who have assumed this duty in the past. Auxiliary members, Kate Vacula and Helen Reuter, helped out in Woodstock at the mobile x-ray unit. A demonstration is being planned for Nov. 5 at 8 p.m. at the Legion hall. Proceeds will go to help both the Legion and the Auxiliary. Anniversary Surprise Party Delores and Johnny Wines were happily surprised recently, the 10th of September to be exact, when a group of friends and relatives staged a fifteenth anniversary surprise beach party for them. Delores' folks were going down to the beach to do some fishing about noon and asked her and Johnny to join them for awhile. When they arrived at the beach they were greeted by about thirtyfive friends and relatives from Chicago, Schiller Park, Northlake and Lombard. Food galore and beautiful gifts topped off with a delicious anniversary cake. Delores said "it was wonderful -- and no cooking!! Mother's Auxiliary Luncheon A "Delight" "What a wonderful way to spend the first day of school" seemed to be the favorite comment heard at the recent Scout Mother's luncheon. „ Almost 100 women enjoyed a delicious lunch served piping hot, with no dishes to do! All the Mothers appreciate the good attendance which possible for the group to raise the necessary funds for the registration fee. ' Don't forget the next auxiliary meeting will be Sppt. 28, Monday evening, at the fire house from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. C'mon out girls, the meeting is fun, informative and short!! Also important!! Born Hospitalized I just learned today (Sunday) that William Born of Wooded Shores is very ill at Memorial Hospital in Woodstock. I sincerely hope that by this time next week he will be much improved. Congratulations To The New Mom And Pop Best wishes to Joyce and Jack Yegge of McHenry who are now parents of a husky young son, Jeffrey Anthony, who was born Sept. 15. Mrs. Yegge is the former Joyce Motulewicz of Wonder Lake. Hello Again Well I'm back again--vacation is over--and now it's back to the drawing board again for another year. I had a very nice time in New- York and New Jersy but a week isn't nearly long enough. I arrived in N.Y. on Sunday at noon and left the following Friday at 2:15 p.m. While there I stayed with my brother and sister-inlaw in Prompton Lakes, New Jersey, which is only about 40 minutes from New York. What with visiting around the local countryside and seeing the sights in downtown Manhattan -- I only managed to work in one day at the Fair but it was a very full day and I thoroughly enjoyed everything I saw. One could spend weeks and not see it all. Perhaps next year I will try to go again. Hon IIY HILLS NEWS INEZ TOPO 385-4672 BEAUTY OF FALL SEASON PROMPTED SCRIBE'S MOVE The leaves of brown are tumbling down--the smell of burning leaves hangs heavy in the ^air like a perfume and football season is here again. For me, this is the most nostalgic season of the year. The trees are beginning to turn color and the next few weeks will seem that someone has taken a paint brush and blended the colors into a beautiful picture. Driving down our open roads the whole world looks like it should be put into a frame. Even my friends from the 'big city' have to agree with me that this was a very good reason for moving, what they call, so far away. Don't you agree? Visit Downey Hospital Rita Ann Mettelka, Bonnie McWilliams, Linda Uhlman and Tom Ary took'tiifoe out to spend an evening at \Downey hospital for veterans. These youngsters, along with several others from Island Lake and McHenry, went there under the leadership of their dance instructor on Wednesday, Sept. 16. They put on a show that the vets thoroughly enjoyed will remember long after they were gone. Their visit was part of a regular monthly visit by members of VFW Post 4600 in McHenry and the auxiliary. Vi Abbink and Renee Jende, members of the auxiliary, accompanied the young people to the hospital. I'm sure they were all proud to have a part in bringing these vets, who have given so much, some measure of joy, by their efforts. Vacationing Postals Return The Harry Postals returned from a trip which took them to Arlington Cemetery where Harry's brother, Lt. Col. Frederick Hayes Postal, is buried. While there, they went on to Petersburg, Va., to spend time with a dear friend, Mrs. Rosa Lester, who lives in the Petersburg Home for Ladies. Then on to Huntsville, Ala., to visit with Mr. and Mrs. W. Senchuk. They went to Redstone Arsenal, Monti Sano and other various points of interest. It sounds like the Postals had a most interesting and enjoyable vacation. Welcome Home For Pekruls A warm welcome home to Ruth and Rudy Pekrul who spent most of the summer at their summer home in Higgins Lake, Roscommon, Mich. The Harry Postals visited them over the July 4th weekend and enjoyed a 6 hour canoe trip down the AuSable River and boating on Higgins Lake. A sincere welcome to them also as new home owners in the subdivision at 2409 So. Riverview Drive. They have, at last, been able to buy the home they have been living in since moving here. Meanwhile, back in the kitchen, Jan Fruik, Vi Abbink, Gloria Smith, Mickey JValters, Inez Young and Renee celebrated Leslie's birthday with a salad lunch. Weekend At Saugatuck, Mich. Vi and Bill Abbink, Midge and Don Teuber, and Clare and I spent a busy, Labor Day weekend with Eunice and Chuck Heise at Eunie's folks' home in the Douglas, Saugatuck, Mich., area. She had us all on a tight schedule, and we came home weary, but had a wonderful time. While we were there we enjoyed a visit with Eunice's Grandmother, Mrs. Hattie Teague, who has been hospitalized there since July when she fell and broke her hip. At 80 years she retains a wonderful sense of humor. The small hospital she was confined to had triplets born there a few days earlier and they allowed us to see the 4 day old babies in their incubators. YOUTH OFFERED PRIZES IN FOOD POSTER CONTEST Greetings I have just one, but a very special birthday greeting for our good friend and neighbor, Bill Abbink, who can't tease me about being older than he is now until next April. Happy birthday, Bill! Foot Trouble It seems that two of our local young ladies have foot trouble these days. Sue Ahlgrim had surgery on her foot at McHenry hospital recently and has had trouble getting it back down on the ground, and our Gail had surgery at MacNeal hospital in Berwyn on her foot, Saturday, Sept. 12. Both are coming along fine, but if you see a young gal hobbling along, it will probably be Sue or Gail. More than 2,100 prizes--including trips to Chicago--await grade school pupils who enter the eighth annual Illinois Food Poster contest, a competition aimed at stimulating the interest of young people in balanced diets. The contest is sponsored by the Illinois Agricultural association (state-wide Farm Bureau) and the state's ninetynine county Farm Bureaus. More than 30,000 pupils entered the competition last year. The state's top seven winners in the food poster contest will receive trips to Chicago for a recognition assembly and banquet on Nov. 16 during the IAA annual meeting. County and district winners will receive personalized walnut plaques and colorful award ribbons. In addition, the winning poster from each county will be exhibited at the IAA annual meeting. The contest is divided /into three divisions: For pupils in first, second and third grades: for pupils in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades; and for seventh and eighth graders. Any theme may be used for developing a poster. Suggested as guides are the following topics: "Meal Time Is Family Time," "Meal Time Is a Happy Time," "Good Food Is Fun," "Foods for Fitness," and "Foods for Work or Play." J. L. Pidcock, IAA assistant secretary of marketing and coordinator of the contest, said that students may sketch, draw, print, or paint the posters. Words, letters, pictures, or other materials may be clipped from newspapers or magazines and used in making posters. Poster size should be about 17 by 22 inches. Expert or fancy artwork is not necessary. The contest closes in late October. The exact deadline for contests is determined by the county Farm Bureaus. Judging will be done by county and state committees. Brochures describing the 1964 contest are available at the county Farm Bureau office. HISTORICAL GROUP ASKS FOR HISTORY ON OLD SETTLERS Leslie's 4th Birthday Leslie Jende, who was 4 years old on Monday, Sept. 14, celebrated with a double party. Recent acquistions of the McHenry County Historical Society are Todd school class records and Todd Magazine Vol. 1, No. 1 December, 1953 and spring issue, donated by Nicholas and Casimer Polizzi of Woodstock and a history of the Eager Beaver Button club of Marengo given by Margaret McMackin of Marengo. The society would like more organizations to write up their histories. The society has been asked to furnish information about the Old Settlers association of McHenry if the records are available. The 1885 history of McHenry county gives an account up to that time. Can anyone give information and when it ceased to function? John R. McClean of Elgin, back in 1868, was asked to attend a meeting and was so pleased he returned to Elgin and started the Old Settlers GRAIN THREAT The cereal leaf beetle continues to be a potential threat to Illinois' grain farmers, according to the Division of Plant Industry's superintendent William T. Larkin. The cereal leaf beetle, first found in the U.S. in 1962, has spread to 83 counties in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. Unless the spread of the beetle is stopped, it could prove costly to the entire small grain industry of the United States. association there. They are still meeting and will celebrate their 100th anniversary in four years. They have all secretary's records except for one year. The association is mentioned in a booklet "McHenry- A History of Its Pioneers and Settlement--100th anniversary --1963" but the society does not have a copy of this booklet. Is there one available?
