Glosson on Saturday, Sept. 19. TREAT AWAITS HOLIDAY VISITOR TO OPERA HOUSE A rare treat awaits the visitor who stops in and steps backward in time in the authentic old Opera House on the Square in Woodstock on Holiday Hospitality Day, held by the women's auxiliary to Memorial hospital. Here, hostesses will be serving English high tea with an Edwardian theme. Guests may partake of tea and a tempting array of gooey delicacies including English scones with butter and jam, succulent trifles and genuine Argyll shortbread -- the whole for a mere 3 shillings and sixpence! It is recorded that the trifle is so-called because the famous English chef who first concocted this little goodie, hare} put to name it, said, "Oit was nothing. Just a trifle!" Recipes for the scones and the trifles will be available but not that for the Argyll shortbread. First made in the kitchens of the Duke of Argyll, the recipe for this shortbread has been handed down to the women of the family, by birth or marriage, for over 200 years and is not permitted to pass out of the family. Mrs. Edgar Hutchison, herself and Argyll woman, is responsible for the Opera House tea. With her own Royal Staffordshire Clan Tartan china, she will also set a typical tea table which will be on display in the lobby. On stage on Holiday Hospitality Day, the McHenry County Historical society will join the Woodstock Fine Arts association in a dramatic presentation of early McHenry county costumes, furniture and similar items of historic interest. Guides will be on hand to direct visitors through the building which is one of the very few remaining authentic 19th Century Opera houses in the country.
