THE MeHEKRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, October IS* 1934 MCCULLOM LAKE NEWS EVE LEVESQUE 885-3191 THOUSANDS VIEW MASS HOME ON HOSPITALITY DAY More than 2,000 persons toured the H. H. Mass home on Lake Shore Drive on Hospitality Day, Oct. 7. The benefit was sponsored by the women's auxiliary of the Memorial Hospital for McHenry County and included tours of two other homes in the area, a glimpse of life in the 19th century at the Woodstock Opera House; a bake sale and Farmer's Market in the Congressional Church; and a visit to the auxiliary's own Gift and Thrift shop. First arrivals at the Mass home were two carloads of people at 9:15 a.m. and were from Wisconsin. The last visitors went through at 5 p.m. During this time, Mrs. H. H. Mass played hostess to the scores who thronged her home. She was assisted by many hostesses including Mrs. A. B. Mc- Connell and your reporter. The low temperature recorded that day deterred the visitors not at all, and throngs waited their turn patiently to enter. In spite of the size of the house, it is so tastefully furnished and complemented with the proper accessories, one can only call it inviting and "lived-in". A complete description of the home and surroundings was described in another issue of the Plaindealer (Sept. 24). One, of the displays which caused a great deal of comment was the hundreds of trophies awarded the Mass family and especially Melinda for their outstanding quarter horses. According to one of the men who worked at parking cars and directing traffic, Ted Wickman, he said it was the most successful Hospitality Day sponsored by the auxiliary. Carl Blom Severely Injured In Car Crash An accident involving two cars, one of which was driven by Carl Blom, resulted in two deaths and severe injury for Mr. Blom. Although he resides in Piano, Carl and his family spend almost every weekend with Dewey Fricke, who is Lorraine's father. The accident occurred in Rockford and Carl was rushed to Swedish American hospital ift that city. His injuries include a broken nose, his one leg shattered below the knee and his chest crushed. According to a telephone conversation with him last Sunday, his spirits sounded good in spite of his injuries. His wife, Lorraine, has been commuting every day between Piano and Rockford to visit t him. No doubt, he would love! hearing from the many friends he has made in the area. Swe-j dish American Hospital, Rockford, should be sufficient address. pointment to many of the gals but without proper interest there can be no organization. Here's hoping the next meeting in November will bring a better, response! Hay Ride For Teens All teenagers in the area are cordially invited to sign up for the hay ride which the local organization is sponsoring on Saturday, Oct. 24. You may sign up at Whitey and Bernice's or call 385-7657, before Oct. 20. Sounds like a fun evening and one the youngsters won't wish to miss. Following a reception at the bride's home, the couple will honeymoon in Peoria. Saddle Trophy For Melinda Mass The latest trophy won by Miss Melinda Mass proved to be a very practical one and was put to good use last Sunday. It is a handsome hand tooled leather saddle and according to Melinda, very comfortable. She received the very high honor for riding the high point horse --Two-D-Two, in Libertyville recently. This is only one of the hundreds of trophies garnered by the 17 year old senior at Marion Central high school. She started riding when she was five! No Quorum For Women's Club Since very few women were on hand for the last meeting of the Ladies of the Lake, there will be no Halloween party this year. Not enough for a quorum so there could be no legal meeting. This will be a great disap- Unfunny Prank Much to her consternation when she tried to put up the flag on Sunday morning, Elma Nelson found the cord tied in knots clear to the top of the pole! Apparently some youngster (?) has discovered that it is fun to spin the cord with utter disregard for the results. This is the third time it happened and Mrs. Nelson took time on the other occasions and patiently untwisted it. Sunday morning it was too cold to spend the twenty minutes unraveling it and our beauiful flag did not fly over the equally beautiful Memorial Park. Seems such a shame. Meeting In Oklahoma Young Don Osberby was in Oklahoma recently on duties in connection with his job. While he was there, he visited with the mother-in-law of his brother. It was the first time they had met. Although Nadine and Dick Osterby live in Alaska, Nadine's parents live in that western state. Nice gesture, what? Elsie and Ray Osterby entertained Don's young bride and her mother for dinner the other p.m. while Don was gone. Work Crew Called For This Sunday! Last weekend, only a few men and ONE teenaged lad showed up for the task of hauling in the raft. The work crew is being called for this Sunday morning at 10 a.m. and the raft WILL be brought in, by some manner or means. There are many sturdy lads who have sport on the equipment all summer but just are not around when there is work to be done!! According to the men who were present, they will make no effort to put the raft in the water next spring. That will be in the hands of the kids who use it! Girl Scout Plea Unfortunately mothers of Girl Scout troop 389 and 150 had not been notified when a recent mothers' meeting was held at the Johnsburg school to decide the fate of the girls advancing to the Junior level. Therefore it has been decided that if the mothers of fly-ups are interested in their daughters continuing in the scout program these mothers should contact either LaVerne Mierzwa, 385-4232 or Mrs. Engh, 385-0739. If enough mothers show a desire to solve the problem confronting the continuation of Girl Scout troop 88 another meeting will be held as soon as possible. Naturally no responses could only mean no interest and the troop will be disbanded. Welcome Mat This week we will introduce to our neighbors two more very nice families who have chosen the Terrace as their home grounds; Both families live on Mapleleaf Drive and both moved in during the summer.
