Mrs. Theodore Wickman of McHenry was hostess for a "coffee" given in honor of U. S. Congressman and Mrs. Robert McClory and sponsored by the 12th Congressional District Women's Republican club. Congressman McClory is on the left and A. B. McConnell on the right. Mr. McConnell is a Republican incumbent for the Illinois General Assembly, whose members will be elected at-large on the long orange ballot on Nov 3rd. A tax of not more than two and a half dollars per year for each ten thousand dollars of assessed valuation will be collected for maintenance. This is based on the Illinois revised statutes establishing the forest preserves and limited to 0.025 percent of equalized value. VOTERS TO ELECT APPELLATE JUDGES FOR FIRST TIME Illinois voters in November-- for the first time in the history of the state--will elect Appellate Court judges. The November selection is part of the judicial reform law that took effect this year. in McHenry county the 1964 election also marks the beginning of a new Appellate Court district on the ballot. Previously, McHenry county was in the old Second Appellate district which included thirtytwo counties. Now this county is part of the new Second Appellate district which includes thirteen counties across the northern border of the state. The new Second Judicial District has been in existence since the first ©f the year, with court hearings being held in the old Second district facilities at Ottawa. New Second Judicial district courtrooms will be constructed in Elgin and the justices expect to start hearing cases there in July of 1966. The Appellate judges elected in November will take office in December, 1964. In the future, these jurists will not appear on political party tickets for reelection, but will "run against their records." This is also a provision of the new judicial article. PLEASED WITH VOTE McHenry county Democrats expressed pleasure this week over the straw vote in Marengo, Crystal Lake and McHenry high schools, in which President Johnson received a large majority in each case. VISIT COUNTY Gail and Mark Percy, eleven year old daughter and nineyear- old son of GOP candidate Charles Percy, will be in Woodstock at Republican headquarters at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2. The entire Percy family will spend the last few days before the Nov. 3 election stumping northern Illinois. The Percy motorcade will also make stops in Belvidere and Marengo. SERVICE NEWS CHERYL HUECKSTAEDT Cheryl Lynn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hueckstaedt of McHenry, has enlisted in the Navy. Her first assignment, which began on Oct. 22, will be ten weeks of basic training in Bainbridge, Md. Cheryl is a 1963 graduate of McHenry high school and a 1964 graduate of Career Academy of Chicago, where she studied to be a medical assistant. Walter C. Foerster, electrician's mate third class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer C. Foerster of McHenry, participated in a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) naval training Operations called "Exercise Team Work" in the North Atlantic while serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Independence. His unit, along with other naval units from Belgium, Denmark, France, Norway, the Netherlands and United Kingdom, is conducting training operations in strike, anti-submarine and anti-air warfare. NATO training operations are held periodically to test the coordination of NATO countries and develop their combined combat readiness. THOMAS ROTI Marine Private Thomas J. Roti, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rocco J. Roti of Wojaraer Lake, completed recruit/training Oct. 6 at the Marine Corps Recruit depot, Parris Island, S. C. The training included drill, bayonet training, physical fitness, parades and ceremonies and other military subjects. Three weeks were spent on the rifle range firing the M-14 rifle and other infantry weapons. Richard Madden, airman apprentice, USN, son oi Mrs. Ol^a Madden of 7703 OakWood drive, Wonder Lake, is presently serving aboard the anti-submarine support aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain, operating out of Newport, R. I. Lake Champlain is participating in a joint\Canadian- U. S. training exercise ipw underway in the Atlantic. The purpose of the two-week exercise is to increase the combat readiness and efficiency of the shifts involved. f Lake Champlain will act as one of the anti-submarine warfare forces. Both U. S. and Canadian submarines will act as the enemy. Albert F. Kempfer has passed1 his Navy tests and will soon he advanced to the rank of third class yeoman. He has boarded the ship Gordon, which will operate with seventy-five ships utilizing 28.000 Marines and the Spanish armed forces in an historic exercise invasion. The Pentagon, the world's largest office building, handles L'70.000 phone calls daily, requires 700 maintenance workers, has its own bank, medical and dental offices, post office, barber shop, drug store, bakery, and bookstore -- plus 30,000 clocks, 1,900 toilets. 65,000 light fixtures, 2 restaurants and 6 cafeterias, 8 snack bars serving 30,000 cups of coffee and 7,000 pints of milk and 3,200 soft drinks um average ua^. Brfilers Plan Calf, Boar And Gill Sales McHenry county livestock breeders have made plans to hold a purebred boar and gilt sale on Monday evening, Oct. 26, at 8 p.m., at the McHenry | county fairgrounds. Some fifty boars, bred gilts and open gilts will be available for purchase. The breeds consigned will be Berkshire, Spotted Poland China, Durocs, Hampshire^ and Yorkshire. The purebred heifer and steer sale will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1:30 p.m., at 1:30 p.m., at the McHenry county fairgrounds. There will be fifty head of Angus, Shorthorn and Hereford steers for sale, plus fifteen head~pf purebred Hereford, Shorthorn and Angus heifers.
