POSTMASTER : "Pleas© pack parcels solidly,' Is the plea of Postmaster Le Hoy M. Smith. The head of the McHenry post office also I reminded his patrons that the | use of free "local" (which is McHenry only) and "out of town" separation bands will hep move the mails faster. The bands are available at the post office or from most letter carriers. If you have no bands. , Use ordinary paper and mark , each bundle. It is suggested that every City to which you address five or more cards, should be banded separately. This is the biggest favor you can dor for the postal employees. Dec. 5 was the suggested deadline for mailing out-of-town packages. "Don't worry about the parcels being delivered too early., just mark 'Don't Open Until Christmas' on the front," Mr. Smith said. A tightly stuffed package, with nothing rattling around inside, will have less chance of being damaged in transit, he noted. - "When packing a gift, remember that the package you send may be shipped on the ^bottom of a mail sack and there may be heavier packages on top. Ajmong the relatively few packages that are damaged in transit, improper packaging is the greatest factor," the postmaster cautioned,. Just to be on the safe side, the postmaster suggests that all packages be insured. Use Care ' He noted that poor packaging and addresses which are either incorrect or not legible are responsible, for the nondelivery of about half a million parcels each year. If the return address is incorrect or illegible and the package cannot be returned, it will be saved for 90 days. If unclaimed, the parcel is usually lost to the sender or intended recipient. Such parcels wind up in public auctions held at fifteen major post offices across the nation. \ All parcels should be addressed on only one side and should aleo have the address written on the inside of the package in case the exterior wrapping should come off. Mr. Smith emphasized that ZIP coding the addresses on parcels and letters helps insure against loss due to improper addressing. Always use your ZIP code number '60050' in your return address. Since' each area of the country has nn individual ZIP code, there is little chance of a piece of mail destined for one city being directed to a city which may have a similar name. For example, there are at least twenty - six possible areas around the country which would have Springfield, and six possible McHenry areas, in the address. There is only one McHenry 60050 and that is our home town. Use of the proper ZIP code would send the mail to the right post office. "We are asking everyone to he especially cooperative this holiday season. During the peak of the rush we expect that seven billion pieces of mail will flow, through the syslem and it looks as if twelve billion pieces will be delivered during the entire month of December. That's quite a bit of mail," the. postmaster said. Finally, . Postmaster Smith sais that the use of the now Christmas stamps helps brighten up envelopes and packages. There are forty-seven postal employees working night and day in the McHenry pos4 office to assure you a Merry Christmas. By following Postmaster Smith's advice, you can help them and yourself to a more relaxed, happier holi- COUNTY BUYS $90,619 IN BONDS DURING ONE MONTH McHenry county residents purchased a total of $90,619 in series E and H United States savings bonds in October, according to Donald J.
