The Naval training center band appeared in McHenry at the local high school in the afternoon of Nov. 30, appearing in concert under the direction of John H. Norris, bandmaster. The Naval training center band in the midwest, is composed of blue jackets who are trained Navy musicians. Sister Miriam of Burlington, Iowa, spent the Thanksgiving holiday with the Sisters of Mercy of St. Patrick's parish. A wedding of local interest was solemnized in Chicago on Nov. 20 when Mrs. Mrytle Seaholm of that city was married to Mr. Arthur Edstrom of McHenry in Joy Methodist church in a 5 o'clock ceremony. St. Mary's Civics club this week received its official charter from the commission on American citizenship in Washington, D. C. The charter formally recognizes the local unity of the Civics club which ! was recently organized. Pupils of grade 8 comprise its membership. McHenry is proud of four young couples, all representing the McHenry dance and figure skating club, an amateur organization, and their showing in competition with state and national skaters. They were entered in a contest held in Chicago. Participants were Robert Arthur and Carol Gnadt, Ronald Johnson and Carole Andersen, Robert Prendi and Donna Dowe and Hubert Hurt and Betty Ann Stilling. Joe G. Buch, owner and operator of the local amateur radio transmitting station 9CEB, was given a very nice newspaper comment by the daily paper at Cambridge, Mass., for services rendered on the night of Dec.. 2. Mr. Buch was the first McHenry young man to install such a station and receive a government license for operation of same. All of these amateur stations are now recorded by all railroads of the country so that they may be called on in cases of emergencies. Four spring lambs were killed by dogs on the W. E. Whiting farm south of this city during last Friday night. The lambs, at present market prices were worth from $14 to $16 each and therefore the loss is quite heavy. McHenry county has seven students enrolled in the college of agriculture at the University of Illinois, according to registration figures. One of these students • is Alice R. Miller of McHenry. Henry Degen has been successful in securing a tenant for his farm southwest of McHenry, and early next spring, with his wife, will once more take up his residence on John street, where he owns a home. The Bureau of Census, United States Department of Commerce, is now engaged in taking federal census of agriculture covering the year 1924. The survey will include all information regarding farmers, their crops and property. Simon Stoffel, local insurance man, has established somewhat of a record for losses adjusted during the past eleven months. He has adjusted claims amounting to a grand total of $19,409.35. Mr. Stoffel has long since been recognized as one of the best insurance adjusters in this section. The Northwest Electric league states that the lighting essay contest has narrowed down to a chosen few. Excellent hand writing proved that the contestants in McHenry and vicinity are among the best writers in the country. Just a few more days and the prizes, with the exception of the na tional prizes, will be awarded, Thoma* Hetherington, 18 years old, left for Chicago and a week of foul play. Joining his half brother, they decided to become bandits ahd robbed three stores during the week. Harold Lewis, 19, was bound over 'to the grand jury at Woodstock by Justice Charles F. Hayes. Richard Nielsen, 26, of Clinton, Wis., was also held on bonds of $5,000. Their arrest came after a "rigged up" electric eye camera in the gasoline station of Dr. E. L. Brunswick, who resides between McHenry and Crystal Lake on Rt. 31, took a picture alleged to be Lewis in the act of robbing his place of business. Paul Justen, a sophomore at St. Ambrose college, Davenport, Iowa, enjoyed his Thanksgiving vacation this weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Justen. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Anderson are building a new home in the Wattles subdivision. Mrs. Gertrude Parcell of Santa Fe, New Mexico, was honored at a dinner party Sunday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Colby. An afternoon bridge club met last Thursday at the home of Mrs. Herbert Simon. The prize winners were Mrs. Simon, Mrs. Albert Vales, Sr., and Mrs. Frank Hughes. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 7, 1939) The entire community was shocked Tuesday afternoon Dec. 5, to learn of the death of onei of its dearest citizens, Dr. Francis J. Aicher, D.D.S., who passed away suddenly in a Chicago office. The death was attributed to coronary thrombosis. Miss Vivian Bolger of McHenry was injured in an automobile accident on Rt. 2, near Elgin, when the car she was riding in was forced off the road and struck a pole. She received lacerations, bruises and shock.
