TIGERS UPSET WARRIORS IN Ti n BATTLE $ Outdoors THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday* December 17,1964 Everybody asks if we have our Christmas shopping done. At this point we are still calm, but let somebody ask us the same question a week from today and it may send shivers up our spine. Had a great time at the Plaindealer Christmas party this week. Fine meal, a sociable crowd and a barrel of laughs. The grand prize was a weekend trip to Pheasant Run for two. Wouldn't you know, the only single man in the crowd was the winner--some fellow from Harvard. From the puzzled look on Larry Lund's face, we decided then and there the case must go to the Supreme Court for a decision. Of course, there is always a chance for the man to qualify before the time limit runs out. A smaller team from Crystal Lake beat the Warrior basketball team here last Friday night. The Tigers had a certain drive that could not be denied. When they get their injured star (Edwards) back in action, look out above! The Warriors travel to Woodstock this week to meet the league leaders. The Blue Streaks lost their big stars from the team of last year through graduation. That was a team that had the horses, but couldn't keep the whippletree even for the hard pull. The experts didn't rate the Streaks high this year, which is further proof that being chosen for top place by the experts is a sure kiss of death. The way college students are acting around the world it behooves us to take a closer look at higher education. Without going into the issue, when we read that 40 percent of those arrested in the California ruckus were not students it made us wonder who was leading whom. But, in the spirit of the season, let's drop that subject for the time being. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa! And if you want proof just go down to the City Park and visit his neat, little home. We talked with Santa this week and he thinks it will be cozier to bring Mrs. Santa with him next year. After listening to the blasts against our country in the United Nations, we think it is high time to get our backs up. Since we are paying the bill, it seems in order to tell nonpaying members to pay up or shut up. Our propaganda department seems to be way behind other countries who have successfully implanted a horrible picture of our country in the minds of many. When diplomacy fails, let's give 'em plain talk like that now famous army officer who, when told to surrender, replied -- "Go to hell!" Now that we have that off our chest, it is time to get into the spirit of Christmas and get our letter ready for Santa Claus. We'll be back next week, same time, same station. JOHN CORSO WINS GRID LETTER AT RIPON COLLEGE RIPON, WIS.--John Corso, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Corso, 3911 W. Oak Avenue, McHenry has received a freshman football letter at Ripon College. He is a graduate of Marian Central Catholic High School, Woodstock, Illinois. When you try your hand at something and fail, the next thing to do is to try your head. It's a wise father who throws away his old report cards. The McHenry Warriors, preseason choice of the conference coaches to grab the 1964-65 conference crown, were dealt a severe blow by neighboring rival Crystal Lake last Friday night by a score of 77-72. It was the first win in four conference outings for the Tigers. The Warriors are new 2-2, tied with Zioii and North Chicago for the third slot. The local lads jumped off to a 6-2 lead early in the game, but Rick Green and Dennis Desmond rallied the Tigers to a 16-16 deadlock by the end of the period. The Warriors shot 24 per cent from the field in the second stanza as Green was continuing his fine first quarter effort by adding eight points in the second. Accurate free throw shooting put the visit ing Tigers ahead by the half 34-28, as Fran Wagner's crew hit on six of seven free throw attempts. The Tigers edged their lead at the end of three periods to 50-43, as they continued to shoot phenominally from the foul line. Crystal Lake ended the game hitting on 31 of 38 from the charity stripe. Fast Finish The Warriors made a game bid to overtake the Tigers in the last 90 seconds of the game as they narrowed the score to 72-70. However, a rapid flurry iced the game. Fowler hit for the Warriors as the game ended. Rich Smith, Warrior guard, was the high scorer in the game with 8 and 10 for a total of 26 points. Bentz added 14 and Soda 13 to the Warrior cause. Green, 6'1%" senior center played a splendid game for the Tigers and tallied 23 points. Desmond notched 17. The Warrior sophs trounced Crystal Lake's underclassmen in the prelim 52-44. Pat Camasta had 20 points for the Warriors. That is the day scheduled by the Northern 111. Conservation Club for their Fourth Annual Ice Fishing Derby. Club publicity director, Harry Stern, has been talking with the fish and says that they indicate ideal weather for this year's event. The Derby will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. three miles west of Antioch on Highway 173. First prize will be a 5% hp. motor and a 14 foot aluminum boat, second prize, a portable TV, third prize, a pump shotgun. In addition there will be approximately 100 other prizes for catching fish, hole chopping, etc. One of the leading tackle companies has developed a 5 piece spin-casting rod, called the "Executive". It comes in a case about 16 inches long that will easily fit into a suitcase or briefcase. Designed for the sportsman who always likes to carry at least one rod with him, we feel that this rod will be a real space saver for campers, and for those treks to the Northern lakes where portaging requires a minimum of bulky gear. Mem Boui Back To Beat liertyville The McHenry grapplers traveled to Libertyville Friday, December 11, to conquer an unbeaten Libertyville squad. McHenry showed power and poise all the way, beating the Wildcats in seven matches, and tieing one. The pace setter for MCHS was Dave Freund (103) who beat Gary Heike, a former Conference Champ. Craig Johnson (112) boosted the score by skillfully beating his man 6-2 for his first win of the season. Other wins included Captain, Jim "Cricket" Anderson (120), Rich Wolf (127), Dave Weikel (154), Jim Creamer (165), and Captain Ron Gelvin (Hwy). Dean "Golden Boy" Glosson, McHenry's third captain tied his match. The Streaks are on top of the league with a 4-0 mark and Fulton is preparing to administer the first league defeat to the Kurtz five. Ev Martindale, 6'3" senior transfer has been the key to the early season success of the Blue Streaks. Many of the coaches in the area consider the lad as one of the finest prep players in the northern part of the state. He currently is second in the conference scoring race with 91 points for a 22.8 per game average. Jim Harting, 5'10" guard and playmaker has also been a pleasant surprise to Blue and White followers. Fulton has hinted that a few changes in the Warrior scheme will unfold in the tussle Friday night which should get under way about 8:15 p.m. Standings Woodstock .. .4 0 260 211 Dundee 3 1 228 198 McHenry 2 2 249 245 North Chicago 2 2 231 227 Zion 2 2 227 236 Crystal Lake ..1 3 266 295 Libertyville ... 1 3 233 235 Barrington 1 3 205 248 Top Scorers FG FT Pts Ave Dahl, Lib 37 27 101 25.3 Martindale, W. 34 23 91 22.8 Desmond, C.L. 33 22 88 22 Goers, Dun. • -37 14 88 22 Harting, W. ..21 22 64 16 Scores Last Week Crystal Lake 77, McHenry 72 Woodstock 69, Barrington 53 Dundee 56, Libertyville 43 Zion-Benton 65, N Chicago 56 Games This Week McHenry at Woodstock Dundee at Crystal Zion at Libertyville Barrington at N.
