Jing S, Lee,- Moline, cailght a 4-pound, 2-ounce sauger on October 20, beating the former state record for that species by five ounces. Lee's wish was 20% inches long and 12Mtinches around. He caught it on a rapala in Sylvan Slough bn .the Mississippi River. ' Alfred Kuriger, Wilmington, caught a 5-pound, 10-ounce smallmouth bass at the Braidwood Recreation Club on May 15. Kuriger was fishing with spin tackle and using a night crawler for bait. The-fish Was 21 inches long and 18M inches in girth. The old smallmouth record was held by Dick Wilhoit, Springfield, for a 5-pound, 8-ounce smallmouth taken from Lake Springfield in 1954. The world's record smallmouth was caught out of Dale Hollow Lake, Kentucky, in. 1955. It weighed 11 pounds, 15 ounces. Both Illinois record breakers were checked and identified by fisheries biologists. The first registered trapshoot of the season in the McHenry area was held at McHenry Sportsmen's Club on RAILS--L. Ray and his son, Dean, must be aiming for the Father- Son competition at the Grand this year. Terry Hansen from Wisconsin fired 97x100 to capture 1st in Clasj B. Class C was won by Bob Phillips with 95x100. Class D was taken by Club Member John Zaleski with 93x100. High Gun in the handicap was Ed Koepke firing 92x100 from the 21 yard -line. Fd is a member of the McHenry club. The 92 along Ayith his 93x100 at the 16 yard line won him High Overall honors. Runner up to Ed was Don Wappler with 91x100. 18-19 yard competition was won by Richard Picard with 89\100. , 20-21 -yard competition was won by Bud Day with 85x100. 22-23 y&rd competition was won by Gerald Moore with 85x100. Campers Fight To Improve Waterways Outdoorsmen, sportsmen, and even campers have joined forces in a determined campaign to impress the U. S. government of the importance and dire need of establishing a controlled water diversion program to maintain adequate levels of the Great Lakes. Unless some action to obtain more water is undertaken soon, many miles of beautiful shoreline and sandy beaches will turn into a vast swampy region of rot and decay. The National Campers and Hikers Association, under the direction of Conservation Director T. W. "Bill" Edinger, Jr. of Pontiac, Illinois has made the preservation of water resources one of their top priorities. "Camping is so closely related to fishing, boating, water skiing, swimming and othier water sports, that NCHlA is" going all out. in encouraging its 18,000 member families from coast to coast to take" an active role in this vital /conservation problem," Edinger said recently. At present, the federal government is trying to ease this grim picture. Secretary of State Dean Rusk has scheduled talks with Canadian authorities in an effort to divert water from Hudson Bay re* gion to the Great Lakes. Mr. Stanley Lezak, president of Millstream Campers of McHenry, Illinois asks that all outdoor lovers in this" area join with NCHA in promoting this program.
