Photos Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 26, 1925) Ernest H. Kamholz gave up his position as foreman at the local plant of the Borden milk bottling plant last Sunday and expects soon to enter the employ of the National Transit company of Chicago as a truck driver. His headquarters will be at Kenosha, to which city he aijd his wife will move soon. Lawrence Huck passed away at his late home at Emerald Park about midnight last Friday, Feb. 20. A local florist, John F. Miller, passed away at his home after several months' illness. He owned and conducted the Rosedale greenhouses located on Fox river. His wife and two children, Theodore and Alice, survive. John M. Phalin has rented the H. H. Fay house on Maple Avenue and expects to move his family from his farm south of town shortly. A Star touring car driven by Gus Freuiid of Johnsburg, one of the stars of the McHenry high school basketball team, and a Buick closed car owned by Dr. N. J. Nye and driven by his son, William, collided in business section of Green street. The Star was quite badly damaged while the Bui'ck escaped more fortunately. No one was injiiried a-nd the accident was unavoidable. Miss Hattie Dake, McHenry county sdfcerintendent of schools, passed away last Friday. Miss Dake was the first woman ever to be elected to this important office and at the time of her death had served two years and three months of her term. "That's One On Bill", a threeact comedy drama, was very capably presented by a cast of home players at the Empire theatre. The performance was given under the direction of Roroo Bobb and for the benefit of the McHenry post, American Legion. Kathryn' Fay was tendered a very pleasant surprise at the home of her parents on Maple Avenue. The occasion, was planned as a sort of farewell surprise as the victim expects to leave soon with her parents for Elgin, where the family will live. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 22, 1940) The local high school instrumental organizations, under the direction nf Paul R. Yanda, will present what is already expected to be one of the finest concerts ever produced by these organizations. The program will consist of numbers by the band, the orchestra, the string and brass quartets which are two new but very fine ensembles, and numbers by several soloists. R.ev. William J. Voeltz, pastor for twenty-eight years at the Evangelical Lutheran church at Sterling, died Feb. 21 in the Walther Memorial hospital, Chicago, of a heart ailment and complications. Rev. Voeltz was born in McHenry and received his elementary education in the McHenry schools and then attended college at Fort Wayne, Ind., entering Concordia Lutheran seminary in St. Louis, Mo. In September of this year, St. Patrick's church will celebrate its 100th anniversary. The following committee has been appointed to complete the history of the parish: Mrs. Ray McGee, Mrs. Eleanor Foley, Mrs. Thomas Bolger, Mrs. John Bolger, Mrs. Clarence Anglese and Miss Anna Frisby. A number of young folks enjoyed a skating party at Bacon's pond near Volo. Refreshment were served at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Russell after the skating. Mr. and Mrs. Edd Peet of Ringwood celebrated tlieir thirty- seventh wedding anniversary at their home Sunday by entertaining their children and families. Mr. and Mrs. David Powers were guests of honor at a surprise party given by the family, the occasion being their thirtysecond wedding anniversary. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 24, 1955) Arrira N. Flood of Island Lake has completed thirty consecutive years of service with Commonwealth Edison company. He has always worked as a mechanic in the transportation department. Tom Blumhorst of McHenry was recently proclaimed county corn growing champion at a banquet held in honor of Northern Illinois corn growing champions. His yield of 149.62 bushels per acre was the top yield in McHenry county in the selected two-acre junior corn growing contest. Mrs. Gretta Goodell attended the Music Teachers National Association biennial national convention at St. Louis, Mo. George P, Freund, who recently witnessed an official unveiling of the Case "400" • at Racine, Wis., is making great preparations for his own showing of this new tractor. Highlights of its introduction here will be a grand opening Feb. 26. Competing in the Miami Fishing tournament last week, Ivar Fredricksen and son, Ronald, catfght a sailfish apiece, a 7 ft. l ,in. weighing about 45. lbs and a 6 ft. 7 in. weighing about 42 lbs. This catch was made while fishing out of Haulover Beach docks. St. Patrick of McHenry won the northeast section Catholic grade school basketball championship last Sunday night at Elgin, beating St. Patrick's of St. Charles 35 to 32 in the finals. Matt Eichinger and Jimmy Conway carried' the scoring load. The Junior high, Edgebrook, St. Mary's and St. Patrick's schools and Harrison school were honored by receiving awards from the Chicago Motor Club for student cooperation with the school safety patrol in earning perfect safety records for 1954. M^rs. Elizabeth Baker, who had spent most of her lifetime in the McHenry community, died at the Villa rest home at Pistakee Bay following an illness of several months. Announcement has been made of the marriage in Woodstock of Miss Melba Palm and Mr. Loren Rothermel. Mr. and Mrs. John McDonald of Chicago are the parents of a son born at Little Company of Mary hospital on Feb. 16. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Walter Carey of McHenry. The new law provides that the school board ,of any school district providing transportation for pupils to and from school EXPLAIN YMCA PROGRAMS OPEN TO YOUNG ADULTS The Lake Region YMCA has announced plans for a March .1 meeting of young adults at 8 p.m. at the YMCA office at 65 N. Williams street, Crystal Lake. The purpose of the meeting will be to learn about the different kind's of YMCA programs for single young adults from Richard Seelover, chairman of the Illinois Area YMCA Young Adult Council extension committee, and to hear the results of a survey taken by the YMCA of single young adults living in Algonquin, Cary, Crystal Lake, Fox River Grove, Huntley, Island Lake, Lake in the Hills, McHenry and .Woodstock. A young adult in the YMCA program is a woman or man between the ages of 18 and 35 years. The Y's Man's Club of the Lake Region YMCA is conducting the survey of single young adults, and will provide the necessary coordination to initiate the activities. All single young adults are invited to compete a questionnaire which has been sent to churches, industries and schools and return it to the YMCA at P.O. C. that a big "breakthrough" has now been made on electronic machines to "read" ZIP-coded addresses on mail. "The Postmaster General said he expects to begin installing these sophisticated new machines in major post offices starting in about a year," the postmaster explained. - ' Mr. Smith said each machine will be able to sort, as well as read, at the rate of 35,000 letters an hour. The offices to, get the address readers have not been an-: nounced, but 5 the local postmaster said they will have significant effects on the mail in and out of each community regardless of whether it gets the new machines. This is because they will speed incoming mail to smaller offices from major cities and step up the dispatch of mail deposited in smaller communities but which must be processed enroute at major mail massing points. The postmaster emphasized, however, introduction of the "seeing eye" device next year does not mean ZIP Code isn't useful already. "ZIP code," he explained, "is important in mail handling under the system of mail processing already in use which will continue to be in use as the basic system at most points. These machines will be just another step -- in conjunction with the mechanical mail sorting machines we have developed-- to help keep pace with the growing volumes of mail. Neither will the machines endanger jobs -- they will only help us meet mail expansion with minimum manpower expansion." The deadline for candidate entries is March 15, 1965. COMPUTER AID A computer now in the Illinois Department of Public Safety is designed to help reduce highway /deaths arid traffic violations. It will also assist in crime control. The computer is handling ticket control, accident reporting, and activity reporting of troopers for the state police division. Data from arrest tickets will be processed to ascertain where each ticket was issued, to whom, and for what violation. Unreported tickets will be called to .the attention of police districts at regular intervals for follow-up action by the courts. A number of other t&sks are now being performed or will be included in the computer's library of programs. These include cost accounting, inventory ' control, financial record keeping and stolen car records.
