Esther Jobes moved out of town, leaving her office of assistant sergeant-at-arms open. Rita Simpson will be leaving our town and had to resign' as chaplain. Following installation,, committee reports were approved by President. Lydia Fenner. McHenry Unit 491 will visit Valley Hi on March 3, reported Community Service Chairman Pearl Sanders. Americanism Chairman Lauretta Homo ancl Junior Auxiliary Americanism Chairman Janet Homo presented a flag to Principal Dorothy Ullrich at Hilltop school and to Reno Bertolotti of the McHenry Junior high. The flag for the Junior high was for the auditorium and measured 10 feet by 15. Mrs. Homo and Janet also presented a flag to our own Girl Scout troop with a set of matching flag poles.' On Thursday, Mrs. Homo presented a flag to the Eastwood Manor Property association. Legislative Chairman Sue Wirfs urqres all members to Write to President Johnson, the Honorable Olih Teague, chairk man of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, or William J. Driver, administrator of Veterans' Affairs, to protest the closing of the veterans' hospi- , tals. These hospitals are so necessary to our disabled veterans and every member owes it to these men to protest their closing these facilities. All replies to your letters of protest are carefully tabulated by the American Legion. Please let Sue know of any answers you may receive. . McHenry Unit 491 visited Downey hospital last Thursday. Sandra Schultz, Jim Schultz, Fred Schoewer, Dick " Pickett, Frances Pickett, Ben Bauer and Delia Freund entertained the veterans. Games were played and refreshments served. Initiation of new members was conducted by the officers. New members initiated were Gertrude Murphy, Pearl Madden, Harriet Bennet, Velma York, Jeanne Hendricks, Marilyn Ehlen, Joy Landre, Eva Pecha, iWinie Reith, Pauline Pickett, Halia Mazzoni and Anna Wardzula. McHenry Unit 491 entertained the Eleventh district director, Barbara Bieritz, of St Charles, her secretary, Rosa Paul, and District Treasurer Elaine Murphy at their annual membership dinner. County President Ruth Mrachek, and her secretary, Sue Wirfs, were also our honored guests. Mrs. Bieritz was very appreciative of McHenry units' endeavor to carry on the American Legion's activities. Our membership chairman, Eleanore Reid, was proud to inform our district director of McHenry's 400 members. Mrs. Reid crowned Evelyn Ficek queen of the evening begause of jhe sixty-two new members she brought in and Frances Matchen was the princess for bringing in forty-eight members. Their court consisted of Bobbie Carroll, Sandra Schultz, Rozlyn Volpendesta, Pearl Cooper, Dorothy Cook. Dorothy Messer, Helen Birmingham, Helen Sclimitt, Maria Guettler and Barbara Hansen. All of the membership committee were given crowns, and prizes were, awarded to the queen and the princess. Many membership awards were given to those attending. A thirty-year pintwas presented to Frances White by President Lydia Fenner. Mary Lennon was not present to accept hers. Mrs. Fenner presented twentyyear continuous membership pins to Ercell Lock, Minnie Meyer, Gertrude Weber, Theresa Cairns, Lenore Cooley, Delia Freund, Evelyn'Justen, Pauline Adams and Alice Barbfan. Lura' Yanda was not present to accept her pin. There are fifteenyear pins waiting to be claimed by Nadine Larkin, Mary Meyer and Marie Schaettgen. President Fenner presented ten-year pins to Eleanore Creutz. Shirley Ballowe, Vickie Diedrich, Ethel Buch, Marie Howe, Mary Lou Thennes, A'dele Weber and Joyce WeWr. Gladys Soucie, who now resides in Ohio, was unable to attend. Her pin was accepted by Frances • Matchen. McHenry Unit 491 is very proud of Junior auxiliary which SOMETHING SPECIAL placed first in all categories Saturday night in Sandusky, Ohio, in the color guard contest. Wa know how hard our girls work and appreciate the honor they bring to McHenry Unit 491. All members are reminded of the post breakfast Feb. 28.
