SORORITY PLEDGE Homemakers Study Handicraft Items The February meeting of the McHenry Homemakers unit was held at the home of Jerry Wiedemann. Each of the ladies attending brought some object of handicraft and explained how it was made, which proved most interesting. They were not only for personal use but also for gift articles for card parties or bazaars. DECENT LITERATURE PROGRAM On Thursday, March 4, at 8:30 p.m., the Altar and Rosary of Christ the King will present in the parish hall, "Citizens for Decent Literature". This program consists of a professionally produced film, "Perversion for Profj£". It is a documentary on the national and local obscenity problem and is for adults only. There will be a speaker and a display of magazines and books that children are exposed to. All adult members of the community are urged to attend. Wittrock and Lee Varese, are important members of the cast of "Bye Bye Birdie" to be presented by Ann Varese & Company at the Lake Theatre, Crystal Lake, on March 17 and 18 . at 8:30 p.m. The McHenry County Republican Central Committee is sponsoring the March 17 and 18 performance of "Bye Bye Birdie", to be presented by Ann Varese and Company at the Lake Theatre at 8:30 p.m. on those Wednesday and Thursday evenings. - Chairman John Licastro of McHenry announces that this benefit theatre party, will be a major fund raising enterprise for the Republican Party Central Committee for this year. The Republican Central Committee has bought out the two performances of this rollicking Broadway musical comedy. This is a different approach for this active group which in the past has sponsored such theatrical luminaries as Henny Youngman. Ann Varese will be starring as Rosie Alverez, secretary to A1 Peterson, played by Larry Ekeroth. Larry has co-starred with Ann in the group s productions of "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" and "Annie Get Your Gun." Past productions of Ann Varese and Comi>any have startled and delighted theatre goers with the professional scenery and set design by Bill Jahn of Libertyville and Lee MoseS of McHenry. MARDI GRAS AT MARIAN CENTRAL SCHOOL FEB. 27 The Student Council of Marian Central is sponsoring the annual Mardi Gras on Saturday, Feb. 27. All Marian students, their families and friends are invited to this gala event which opens at 4 p.m.. and ends at 11 p.m. Most of the clubs are participating in this event by presenting one or two booths. These range from a Spook House to a Pizza Booth. All the clubs are unofficially competing to make more money than any of the previous years. A sock-hop from 8 to 11 will conclude the festivities. READ THE CLASSIFIEDS MISSIONARIES GIVE/TALKS IN CHURCH MARCH 4-7 The Chain O'Lakes Evangelical Covenant Church will be sharing the Chicagoland Missionary Conference on March 4 and 7. The Rev. Chester Larson and Miss Elsie Carlson, both missionaries to Congo, will visit the congregation here. On Thursday, March 4, Rev. Chester Larson will speak and show slides of his work in the Republic of Congo. The regular church family fellowship supper will precede his message. Rev. Larson and his wife have been missionaries in Congo since 1951. He has served as preacher and teacher concerned with the work of evangelism among the villages. He alsb located in another area of the Congo during his second, term and Gospel was carried to areas where it had never been before. During his third term on the Congo field he was legal representative for the mission. This involved acting as the official representative for the mission in relation to the government of Congo. Because of his position and location in Gemena, Rev. Larson has had many opportunities to counsel with the national president of the Church of Christ of the Ubangi and with many other Congo leaders. He also taught religion in the government secoftdary school in Gemena. On Sunday, March 7, at the 11 a.m. worship service, Miss Elsie Carlson will speak. She was first sent to Congo in 1952. She has served as a nurse in the hospital operated in Karawa, Congo. She was in charge of dispensary for a/?ftyie, treating over 9,000 patients, and served as a nurse to over 200 lepers. The Chain O'Lakes Evangelical Covenant Church is located at 4815 North Wilmot Road, north of Johnsburg. Large Crowd At Deanery Meet Ninety-five women from Catholic parishes in McHenry county attended the open deanery meeting held in St. Mary's auditorium, McHenry, on Thursday ni^C'Feb. 18. Rev. Eugene Baumhofer, host pastor, introduced the guest speaker James Wiebler, noted Catholic layman, a member of the Liturgical Commission for ROckfdrd Diocese and a professor at Loyola University. His talk was most interesting and there was an open discussion. Newly elected president, Mrs. Leroy Welter, of St. Mary's Parish conducted the meeting and introduced the new officers: Mrs. Dolores ' Wines of Wonder Lake, first vice-president; Miss Adelaide Muto of Woodstock, second vice-president; Mrs. Mary Boetsch of Crystal Lake, secretary; Mrs. Rose Kamrat of Cary, Treasurer; Mrs. Eleanor Pawlikowski of McHenry, director at large. The chairman of committees were also introduced: Mrs. Welter read, the Bishop's Mandate and explained the purpose of the various committees. The meeting was closed with a prayer by Father Baumhofer. . RONALD REAGAN TO BE FEATURED AT GOP MEETING The tri-county Republican Club of Boone, Lake and McHenry counties wil sponsor an outstanding program on Friday, March 19, at 8:30 p.m. at the Deerfield high school auditorium, Deerfield. The evening will be headlined with a talk by screen and television star Ronald Reagan. Joining Mr. Reagan on the platform will be State Treasurer William J. Scott. Tickets for the program may be obtained by writing to Tri-County Republican Club, Box 169, Lake Forest. Mr. Reagan, a native son of northwest Illinois, holds an AB degree from Eureka College (Illinois). He was a sports announcer at radio station WHO. Des Moines, Iowa, prior to becoming a motion picture actor in 1937. He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and served as guild president 1949-51. Mrs. Reagan is the former Nancy Davis, daughter of Dr. and M Loyal Davis of Chicago. During the 1964 Republic national campaign, Mr. Reagan gained nation-wide political attention for his television appearances in behalf of the ticket. Just recently he has authored an autobiography titled "Where's the Rest of Me." Thomas R. WOMAN'S CLUB PLANS TOUR TO MILWAUKEE SOON The McHenry Woman's Club will leave from the Community Methodist church at 8:30 Monday morning, March 8, for Milwaukee, where they will tour a brewing company and then enjoy lunch at a German restaurant. The afternoon activities will include a visit to the War Memorial building and the Mid- West Flower and Garden Festival at the State fair park.
