^ -V, ^ ^ ^^ ^ Sji ^ y THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday* March; 1L 19^5 ri r SO I HEAR PREVIEW--Met Jim Doran on the street the other night and learned that his grade schooF basketball teams of St. Mary's will meet the St. Patrick's teams on Friday night of this week. There will be three games in St. Mary's gym. At 6:30 the fifth grade boys will play. Sixth graders meet in the second game, then comes the present seventh graders in a preview of next year's varsity teams. Remember. The games are set for Friday of this week. Should be good to watch. While we are moving into that in between sports season when local wrestling and basketball has come to an end in our local high school, basketballs are still bouncing. Sectional tournaments are leading life right up to the Champaign finals. Seems like old news or past history now, but the defeat of our Warriors by Elgin in the regional was disappointing/ It still seems we should have beaten that team. Guess they were better than many of us thought. They beat Dundee in the finals and that is quite an order. The Elgin team this year lacks state tournament size but those boys stay right in the game all the way. We wouldn't have enjoyed that Elgin-Dundee final game. All five starters for Dundee fouled out. Four Elgin players, not all starters, were out on fouls at the finish. It was a game of tootin' and subs ti too tin'. The way they call fouls these days for a tap on the wrist there shouldn't be a foul-out rule. They have penalties in every other game, but the player stays^in the game unless it is a dirty foul that deserves his hamshment. 'Who wants to see a championship decided with the regulars on the bench. We would like to see a team win or lose with their best. To the best of our recollection nobody ever finished a bout for Joe Louis or a match for Sam Snead. "Pepper" Martin, the indestructible ball player, has answered the final call. He had that great desire that makes a great athlete stand above the rest. He was in the right crowd when he played for the old Gas Itouse gang at St. Louis. That was a tobacco chawin', hell-forleather bunch of ball players if ever we saw one. Age and illness put the third strike past the "Wild Horse of the Osage", but it is a good be* he went out swinging. Walsh's bird haven, where the robins claim the cherries and the starlings strut like rulers of all they survey, has been busy putting out bird food all winter. Now we have more sparrows than anybody. PICKUPS: It's what guests say as they pull Out of the driveway that really counts. Skipping is a good weight-reducer-- skipping meals, that is! When it comes to giving, some B£opl6 stop at nothing. A sure sign of old age is when you feel your corns more than your oats. DRIVING TO RELAX? Many motorists enjoy driving for relaxation--or do they? The Institute for Safer Living states that during a short drive on an average highway the average driver will be required to do the following: make a number of minor driving decisions and at least one major decision; take anywhere from 25 to 125 muscular actions per, minute; lake evasive action to avoid one or more hazardous situations; correct one or more driving errors; and make up to a hundred or more visual observations per minute requiring eye movement. Outscored in the overtime period 8 to 4 the McHenry club looked exceptional in every department except from the free throw line. The six successful free throws in 20 trys was the difference in the Warriors being victorious. The Warriors were relentless as they charged to a 22-17 first period lead. Laurence, Bentz and Rich Smith led the attack. The Warriors were still in command by the half, but their margin had been shaved to 43- 38. The Maroons forged back into the ball game during the third period as they outscored the Warriors 18-13. The Warriors missed seven free throws in the period which greatly aided the Elgin cause. Ken Laurence and Rich Soda fouled out of the game during the final period, and their loss hurt the Warriors. Laurence in particular had played one of his finest games of the season up to his departure. He tallied 17 points for the night's work. The Warriors got possession of the ball with a minute left in regulation time and held the ball for one last shot. A jump shot by Smith at the gun was off the mark. The Maroons jumped off to a quick lead in the three minute overtime and were never headed. Ahead by six points with a few seconds left the Maroons watched Smith toss in a' long two hander as the game ended. Mike Wimpleberg led the Maroons with 20 points and did yeoman duty on the boards. Bentz scored 18 for the Warriors while Rich Smith and Laurence had 17 apiece. A good number of these folks, who in the past ,had been reluctant to travel because of lodging costs, have discovered that by making tise of State parks and camping facilities they can enjoy a wonderful vacation and a minimum of expense. In Illinois alone, the camping "bug" has bitten a lot ,of people and the following figures will give you an idea of how the sport is mushrooming. An 18 per cent gain in camping was recorded for 1964 with 454,879 campers registered, compared with 383,401 in 1963. The largest number of campers were from Illinois but there were 7.63 per cent more out-ofstaters who numbered 111,004, while the previous year's figure was 103,134. Every state in the union was represented by campers in Illinois with Indiana having 14,474; Ohio, 12,407Iowa, 11,822; Michigan, 10,809 and Missouri, 9,292, Hawaii had the least number, 71.. A number of foreign countries were represented with Canada having 3,076; Mexico, 9 and 182 from other countries. YMCA PLANS TO ORGANIZE GOLF LEAGUE IN AREA Men and women who are interested in joining a golf league are needed. Both leagues will play at Bit O' Heather golf course. The Lake Region YMCA will organize the leagues if there is enough interest. The men's league will play at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday evenings and the women's league would golf at 1:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Players who are beginners, intermediate or advanced golfers are welcome to participate in the leagues. Although competition would not begin until April 29th when daylight savings time goes into effect, the names of interested golfers are needed soon to reserve the time for their competition. Additional information is available at the Lake Region YMCA by calling 459-4455 or writing to P.O. Box 337, Crystal Lake. During recent years there has been a change in camping styles with trailers replacing tents and 55,454 trailer campers registered in 1964, compared with 38,230 in 1963; a 43.59 per cent gain. The greater use of camping areas is of particular interest, as the number of areas making a chaise for camping nearly doubled in 1964. There are 49 parks, memorials and conservation areas making a charge of 50 cents per night, per site. A charge of $1 a week, or any portion of a week, is made for organized youth groups such as Boy Scouts. For 1964 there was a 25 per cent increase in camping income, which is used for improvement of camping facilities. During the past year electric outlets were added in number of parks as well as sa& itary stations for trailers. Several parks now have showers for campers.
