y's THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, March 25/ 1965" i/ fff The regular meeting of the directors of the McHenry Coun , ty Soil and Water Conservation District was held Thursday . afternoon in the SCS office ir~ --Woodstock. Present were di rectors Kenneth Fiske, Wood stock; Myron Pihl, Harvard; William Harris, Richmond: Howard Ruth, Huntley; SCS technicians Sam Haning ant' Clayton Bruce. Kenneth Fiske was reelected chairman; . Henry Markison, vice-chairman; and Myron Pihl, treasurer. William Harris was elected secretary, replacing Harold Swanson, who is retiring from the board. Plans for observance of Soil Stewardship Week, May 23 through 30, were discussed. Informational material and church program inserts will again be provided to forty-eight participating churches. Ministers wishing to take part in the district stewardship program are en-: couraged to contact a district director or call the office 338- 0049 for information. The McHenry district was represented at a meeting of district directors, Illinois Geologic Survey, Soil Conservation Service, and Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission personnel in the six-county metropolitan area by Kenneth Fiske and Sam Haning. Under discussion were ways each group could contribute toward providing a basis for developing a comprehensive plan for the use and conservation of land resources of the metropolitan area. The McHenry board approved the following proposals: 1--That a full time soil scientist be assigned to the staff of the N. E. Planning Commission to provide soil interpretive information and to correlate the soil maps in the six county area, 2--That an advisory group composed of representatives from each district board be organized to provide guidelines and to review progress. Twenty-two cooperators have requested the use of the district treeplanters to plant 119,000 trees this spring. Wildlife packets and tree seedling orders are still being accepted by the state nursery. The McHenry County Soil and Water Conservation District has entered the nineteenth annual Goodyear competition to select the nation's top fiftythree conservation districts, according to Kenneth Fiske, Woodstock, district 'chairman. Activities of the district will be weighed against the performance of other districts in the state in determining the outstanding district. Fiske said the district's outstanding cooperator will be selected from among the 1,000 farm operators enrolled in the district program. Nationally almost 2,000,000 farmers in over 2,950 districts have signed cooperative agreements with local Soil and Water Conservation districts. ^ ™ AGENCY MILLSTREAM'S VOLUNTEERS IN CANCER CRUSADE HEAR GOOD NEWS Good news about the fight against cancer was given the 100 volunteer worker-leaders of the McHenry County Cancer Cru- •sade as they prepared to launch the 1965 two-pronged drive this week. At the kick-off dinner Tuesday night, workers learned from the American Cancer Society that except for certain types of cancer the death rates are in general leveling off--in some cases going down. Exceptions to this "good news" report are cancer of the lung and pancreas, and lukemia. Workers also heard a welcome announcement from Arnold May, Cancer Crusade chairman. May reported that for the" first time, the Cancer Crusade will have a chairman whose job it is to contact industries. Amos E. Buettell of Richmond has accepted the chairmanship of the industrial solicitation. Main speaker at the dinner was Dr. Arminger Sommers, Abbott Laboratories scientist who heads the Lake county unit of the American Cancer Society. Reports from the American Cancer Society say that the increase in lung cancer can be attributed to smoking, but the reasons for the increase in cancer of the pancreas and lukemia are unknown. The society reiterated in the value of its educational program on uterine cancer because greater use of the "pap" technique could, virtually eliminate the disease as a cause of death. Once uterine cancer was the leading cause of death from cancer among women. Now the death rate has been cut 50 per cent in the past twenty-five years. Hitting hard at unnecessaryloss of life from smoking, the American Cancer Society reports that "as for deaths from lung cancer, 75 per cent could be avoided if people did not smoke cigarettes. It is estimated that 52,000 will develop lung cancer in 1965." w CONCENTRATED SHAMPOO FORMULA 20 99 SUPER DISCOUNTS 5-oz. plastic tube 2 FASHION RITE HOME PERMANENT KIT Pre-Mixed Neutralirer M&vnywft 26" Tall.
