The hartie of Jacob Justen has been associated with McHenry's business for nearly forty-one years. His first business venture in this cify was in partnership with his brother, N. J. Justen. This partnership was dissolved about thirty years ago. Starting out with a small stock Mr. Justen through earnest endeavor, gradually saw one of t he most substantial houses to be found in any of the smaller towns of this locality. Twenty or "more of the business men of Green street, who are members of the newly organized Centerviilc Business Men's Association, got out last Friday with picks, shovels and Wheel barrows and succeeded in filling up the holes and otherwise improving the appearance of the business section of that end of town. Mr. and Mrs. William Spencer were victims of a very pleasant surprise tendered them by a number of relatives and fffeKite at llwfr JYottte itt the sfoiith ehd of this city last Sunday. The occasion was their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. They Were presented a very beautiful gift of silver as A iriemento. Joseph N. Miller, local inventor and manufacturer of the Miller fly swatter, Miller weedless hook, Miller pump pole fish lihe, is very busily engaged in the manufacture of these article. . Mr. Miller together fcith two girls is kept very busv tilling. oi'ders for fly swatters and fish hooks, and right now Wofk is going along at top speed to make it possible to have ready for May 1st delivery of i very fine order for the swatters. Mr. Miller "started the manufacture of the fly swatters last year, setting up his equipment in his private garage at his home on Pearl Street ahd turning out scatters ftt thfe rate of more than a thousand a day. J. It. Walton of Volo called H't the Plaindealer office to rehew his subscription to the pafc> er for another year-. He has taken the paper continuously for forty-five years. He had a receipt with him for payment of the Plaindealer nearly half a century ago. The receipt is dated Feb. 26, 1880, and credits Mr. Walton's subscription from t)ec. 24, 1879 to Dec. 24, 1880. It was signed by J. Van Slyke and son. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 28, 1940) Mrs. Annabel Aicher in the company of Dr. and Mrs. Walter May!and of Chicago spent two weeks in Pueblo, Mexico, visiting many places of interest. Walter Carlson, 39 years old Who resides on a farm home a few miles south of McHenry on old Crystal Lake road, died of a gun shot wound. He was despondent over poor health. Miss Laverrie Cavet of Fox Lake became the lovely bride of Mr. Ralph Schaefer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Schaefer of Johnsburg at St. Bede's church, Fox Lake. The Ringwood Chicago and N. Western railroad depot was closed Saturday evening. F. A. Hitchens, the station agent ha$ wot. heard where he will be transferred to as yet. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Wagner of McHenry are the parents of a boy March 26 at Woodstock hospital. Clarence Anderson left for Goldsborough, N. C., Sunday where he will start his pitching career with the Milwaukee Brewers. He is under contract with the team as a result of the all star games at Elgin last summer. The senior class at the McHenry community high school has presented ten steel filing cabinets as its graduation gif; to the school. The cabinets are desk high and wijl be used by the teachers in their respective rooms. Announcement was made of the marriage of Miss Anna Anderson, daughter of John Anderson of McHenry, 1o Paul Traub of Elgin at a dinner given in Niesen's Cafe. Patzke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Patzke, is scheduled to return to the United States from Japan. He is a clerk at the Second Transportation Port Command C. and has been overseas eight months. He holds the U. N. and Korean Service ribbons. Dr. and Mrs. H. S. Fike anrl family have juS't returned from Michigan where they attended -a double funeral service for his mother and fa>her. Bruce Bright, eight, month old son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Bright, died of Suffocation at the „farm honhe of his parents south of Lakemoor. Announcement has been made of the marriage in Tokyo, Japan, of Miss Ruth Bouril of Elgin and Chester Howard, son of Mrs. Frank Kempfer of McHenry. Several McHepry people attend the concert given by the University of Notre Dame Glee Club in St. Fdward's high school in Elgin. Donald Freund and John Bolger are members of the club. Mrs. Ben Freund and her daughter, Mrs. M. L. Schocnholtz, and daughter, Ruth, visited Pvt. Loren Freund at Camp Gordon, near Augusta, Ga., the past week. The high school brass quartet, flute trio and violin quartet under the direction of Paul R. Yanda, made an appearance over W.K.R.S.. Waukegan. Miss Nancy Siemon, a senior at the college of St. Teresa. Winona, Minn., appeared in the musical revue last weekend. She is the daughter of the E.G. Siemons of Shalimar. Mrs. Mathilda Smith died at St. Joseph's hospital, Elgin, following an illness of two months. She was born in McHenry and lived her youth here, being the daughter of Mrs. Catherine Young. Cooper* for I School Dance A Huge Stieeess The Ringwood 7th and 8th graders sponsored a dance last Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. It proved to be a huge succcss with the younger set as well as for the adults who attended. Mr. j Smijkal announced Patty Bren-j nan and Tom Law were chosen ! queen and king, respectively, and presented t.hem withcunvns. Darrell and Roger Barker, Sam Sands, Peter Jours and Pat. Powers provided entertainment. Pop anrl candy were sold also. This may prove to b? an annual affair according to the turnout and la'k. On Sundfiy; Charles and Sandy Cooper were the guests at a combination housewarming and wedding shower which was held in the Darrell Samuelson home with Marge Samuelson, Dorothy Decker and Phyllis Ackerman as co-hor lenses. Mrs. Cooper was the Tormer Sandy Wagner, formerly of •Ringwood. The young couple wvrc married last November and were presented with many vifts from all in attendance. Refreshments were served following the gift-opening. Daphne is the County Livestock Feeders Hold Meeting The annual meeting and election of officers of the McHenry County Livestock Feeders Association was held Tuesday, daughter* of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Bruce. (Bill) Jones, of the Omahti Office, gave a lengthy report on the work the association has done during the past year, and also talked.about the work planned for the coming year. He also talked on the safe use of livestock chemicals, drugs and additjives. All officers, were re-elected. One new director, Jim Book, was elected to replace Herbert Loertscher, who is moving to Iowa. Louis Engelbrecht, farm adviser, discussed the Beef Carcass of Tomorrow contest, to be held April 8 at Swift & Co., Rochelle, 111. Coffee and lunch were enjoyed following the meeting.
