A HELPING HAND "Dear Sir: "We'd like others to know of the prompt and sympathetic cooperation our township supervisor at Lakeland Park this weekend after the creek went over the banks, flooding homes, roads, furnaces, rendering septic fields inoperable and endangering water supplies. As the residents were evacuating their homes and the men worked to build restraining walls we called Walter Dean, our township supervisor, though Lakeland Park is an unincorporated area and strictly speaking Mr. Dean is not responsible for our problem. Despite this, he was here within fifteen minutes after he received the call and patrolled the area to see what action would be effective. The McHenry Fire Department and Wonder Lake Fire Department fined for about three weeks. He was a painter and decorator by trade. Mr. Oik was born Feb. 21, 1914, in Evanston. He was a veteran of World War II, during which time he served with the Air Force. He had been highly decorated, chief among them the Distinguished Flying Cross. He designed the Veterans Memorial Poppy flag which can be flown next to the American flag on any special veteran day. Survivors are his wife, Margaret Dewey Oik; seven children, Mrs. Stephen (Margaret) Major of McHenry, Mary Ann of Elgin, Elizabeth, Nancy^ Theresa, Loring and Matthew "at home; one sister, Margaret Price, of Glenview; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, James Matthew, in 1950. The deceased was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The body rests at the George Justen & Son chapel until Friday morning at 10 o'clock. Last rites will be conducted from St. Mary's Catholic church with interment in the church cemetery.
